Putting the chairlift bar down

Every video ive seen of pro s/ other kids on newschoolers riding the chairlift, they never put the bar down. Why the fuck would you not put the bar down? Its more comfy to rest your skis on the bar, and if u lean forward you dont die. It seems like they just do it to act hard or something, but I think its really stupid not to put the bar down, especially on super sketchy high chairlifts.

99% of the time i leave it up. It's not to be badass, but rather, i get tired of up,down,up,down,up,down,up,down all fucking day long. So if i sit with people that want it down...cool. Just warn me befor you yank it down as fast as humanly possible, sometimes even before we are all actually SEATED. Then, at the top, you can put the bar up. And yeah, if my legs are tired, i'll put the bar down.

If it has foot rests I'll put it down to rest my legs. If it doesn't, I don't give a flying fuck about whether it's up or down.

very few chairs have foot rests.

95% of the time i am on a chairlift i am very, very high. the chances of me forgetting to put the bar up are very, very high.

i dont think i have ever fallen out of a chair, even when passed out drunk, so what makes you think i would fall out of a chair when awake?

I have no issue with people who like the bar down, but its more of a hinderance for me.

I usually close mine because it's easier to 'hang' on, anyways, last year in france i had a lifty stop the lift for 10 minutes because some retard didn't close his bar, skipatrol had to drive a sled underneath him and yell at him before he realized the lift had stopped because of him :P

I usually wont do it unless im dog tired and wanna use the foot rests or so high/windy that the chair is shaking back and forth.

I usually only put it down if it's windy, it's a sketchy two-person chairlift, or the chairlift goes down at some point (you really see how high you are).

good idea to put the bar down on blackcombs solar coaster. Pretty scary when it rolls back a good 30 feet and you start swinging while learning over trying to light a J

I live on the EC and the mountain staff usually makes us put it down, so when I went out West i assumed itd be even stricter seeing as the hills are even more dangerous. To my surprise, 90% of the lifts I rode didn't have bars at all. It's just a different culture.

depends on the chair. if its high as fuck over sketch cliffs etc i will but, if its not i wont bother. im not against it being down if somebody else does it but dont get pissy about it having to go down right away. also after playing gnar seriously for a week when one of the rules was not to put the sissy bar down ive got out of the habit of it.

Sometimes the bar is so heavy that i'm scared to pull it down in fear that i'll somehow fuck it up and fall off while pulling it down, therefore by natural selection I would die. Avoiding death at all costs, so I just hold on real tight and do not lean forward, perfect solution.

i've heard of at least a few hills who don't even have bars on the lift anymore. also, many chairs don't have foot rests anymore. finally, if you can't just sit on a chair without needing some steel bar to keep you there, get off.

I enjoy the freedom feeling. Ifindif you take a few rides with the bar then a ride without it, the freedom feeling is much better. Cool story eh?

if people hit me in the head with the bar because they're closing it before i'm even seated, i usually retaliate by keeping the bar closed till the very last moment, it's pretty good when they panic :)

haha i knew i would get called a pussy ... but you try and ride the whistler peak chair on a windy day with the bar up and tell me who the pussy is. I have ridden the chair many times with it up and i dont really care too much , its not really scary on 95% of chairs but I just find it more comfy and practical to have the bar down and a footrest , and if i need to lean forward or anything its not sketchy .

depends on the chair but its fun to make a game of it sometimes

like if your mountain has a certain sketchy chair you can place wages on who can ride all the way with no bar on a windy night.

i usually put it down though.

99% of chairlifts in the Alps have footrests, in many places they'll actually stop the lift if you don't put the bar down. It's funny that the US have such strict rules on backcountry access, but don't put bars, or allow bars to be kept up, on chairlifts. Slightly ironic.

Yeah but if you compare the terrain some of the alps chairs go up in comparison to say the east coast the chance of you dying if the chair stops is alot higher. Ive def been on chairs where they run up closed terrain where 90% is sheer cliffs or unskiable trees

the chairlift designers just need to make the rests like 5 cm wider, whenever i bring out my pow skis i have one ski on the footrest and the other dangling free till it goes numb because the rests aren't big enough to carry my fatties .....

If I'm going up on lifts that are insanely high I put it down, or if I'm with my little sister when I'm skiing out west, cause my hill took them off

Where I ski they don't have them but when I go somewhere they do I never use them. I hate getting cracked in the head by them. They should just take em off
