Surfing: Are hard boards diffcult to use compared to soft boards

it's more the shape. were you using a huge foam board? those are super easy to catch waves on. Smaller shapes might make it harder. But the hardest part is getting up at the right time and once you can do that you'll probably be ok on most stuff.

i think beginners tend to use soft boards as well is simply because they are softer and will hurt less if you smack your head on it or something when falling

I'd stick with a foam long board the first few times till you get pretty solid at standing. Then after 2/3 times out, go out for an hour on a foam board then switch to a hard longboard. Once you get used to that... then you can go to a shortboard. Shortboards are quite a bit more difficult. My sis has a foam and hard long board and I always need to take out the foam board the first day or two before I try for the hard. I can't handle her shortboard for the life of me.

don't use a foam board unless you are a) a pussy b) enjoy getting laughed out of the water c) are a 50+ year old lady or d) are a fat european tourist in hawaii. if you wanna learn get a 7 foot funboard and step up or down from there.
