nice job for your first skateboarding! i really enjoyed it. the colors were nice, maybe not quite pristine for my liking but definitely not bad either. and i liked the variety of shots with the tripod shots and the close ups under the rails. i really liked the audio tho. definitely adds to the video. nicely done!
thank you! the colors were off due to the fact that my footage was overexposed. im looking into getting a loupe because my footage tends to be overexposed a lot. i try to not film with the fisheye all the time, so im glad you appreciated it, and i make it a point to keep the sound of the skating in there, you're right, it does add to it.
My thoughts:
The filming, editing, and riding didn't flow at all with the song. The two seemed very disjointed.
The cuts were too long for the most part, cleaner tighter cuts would have keep the pace up, and the viewer engaged. Matching the cuts to the music would be a great way to connect the two, and clean up the cuts.
The film burns were meh
It was a little bit crossfade heavy, If you are using a transition like a crossfade, it usually signifies a change in time, location, etc. which is fine, but transitioning within the edit would have been better suited to using the music and the editing(strategically placed cuts)
Those are all very valid points, that is what i was looking for in terms of a critique.
First off, the song choice was not mine so i did the best i could do.
Second, i didn't have very much footage so that explains the long cuts. i always try to match the cuts to the music, but i know i didn't do a very good job with this edit.
I figured the burns were meh but i didn't want to have just a straight cut cause i felt that didn't flow. Yea the cross fades were a little much. ive been cross fading a lot in my edits recently only because i feel that the cuts dont flow enough for my liking (it could just be me).
What you said about the change in time with the cross fades is something I've never heard before, but now that i think about it, it makes a lot of sense.
Thanks for the critique, sklar.
Also here are 2 of my edits from last year so you can compare them to this if you want:
