Sticky Cleanup in M&A

So, as some of you may have noticed, Malcolm, myself, and others are doing a bit of sticky spring cleaning. Too many threads were up there, thread that are long enough to find easily and bumped enough to stay active.

But, alas, we can't perfect it if the audience has other thoughts! So:

-What threads would you like to stickied?
-Should we have more, less, or similar amount of stickies?
-Do you think the long threads are obnoxious to scroll past?
-Should we create a "Master Sticky" post with links to the threads that are the most helpful/sought after?

Right now, these are our thoughts:

-The post your best photography is posted in at least once a day. It will stay on the front pages and people will know where to go. Sticky removed
-Song you cant stop listening to, also posted in somewhat frequently, doesn't prevent too many similar threads from being made (OMG I'M LISTENING TO THIS SONG RIGHT NOW AND LOVE IT are the least of our current problems). Sticky removed
-Artwork thread - those that use it, know where to find it. However, having it hidden pages in could create a lot of "my artwork +K obnoxious title" threads. Sticky Status pending
-How to buy a camera thread was mostly just links to websites that are outdated. While good, it can be referenced. Sticky removed
-Movie thread is easy to find, not many threads prevented. Will definitely link to it in a master sticky if we go that route. Sticky removed
-Model contracts. Not sure if relevant to a lot of people, but something very handy. Sticky status: pending.
-What camera thread?! Not to toot my own horn, but probably one of the most used threads in here. Has helped somewhat. Sticky kept, pending update (I need to make a version 2.0, maybe include a lens buying guide in it as well for DSLR applicants)
-We aren't sure what should be kept up top, and what shouldnt. So yeah, your turn!

a stickied "Master Sticky" thread with links to the old stickies is actually a great idea.

My only issues with it, are forum-build related. they are:

we cannot edit original posts. it would be awesome to keep a running thread with everything in the OP. Alas, we can not.

We can also not lock threads. It would be awesome if one person, because we cannot edit OP's, would be the only one with permission to post in a thread to keep it updated.


Only way to do it is have constant moderation of the thread, and deletion of all posts not formatted/with links to the other threads

yup yes, needs to be done. we need some rules for it though, like only one pic at a time. dont pull a Dingosean and dump everything youve shot the past week into one post

Along side of the directory thread, the only other stickies would be contest related, and a motherfucking critique thread. because that would need to be at the top of the forums to keep it as easy to find as possible. Hahah, those threads bother me so much

Yeah, I know right!

I was also thinking we could get a 'what camera/lens/accessory" thread for video, and then a separate one for photography. We have a billion threads recommending t2i's, 30-50d's, and tamron 17-50's, it would be so much easier and cleaner if we only had two.

Dope! To be honest right now I miss all the stickies at the top, it's throwing me a little bit. In the long run this is awesome though, it'll be way easier to come in here and start reading.

I've always been skeptical of the idea of one thread for all critiques, because some videos might get left behind without feedback just due to unfortunate post times. While I cannot say I like having all sorts of critique threads in M&A, it's nice to have your own thread to bump and get many responses, where in a central thread you may only get one, even none if you're that unlucky, and they're not even guaranteed to be good.

If you make a critique thread there have to be some guidelines about posting in it. Things like that if you post a video to be critiqued, you have to critique the one above it, however many posts up that is. There could be suggestions for critique parameters slash a "form" to fill out so that people don't just put "dope liked the colors your friend kills it" and then posts theirs.

...nah'm saying?

i think a critique thread would be nice

I also think that the "How to buy a camera(or whatever it was called)" should be brought back with out the links. Just a bare bones bullet points that help point people in the right direction.

You must critique a photo to post a photo, if you fail to critique a photo within two hours of posting a photo of your own, it will be deleted.

The critique also can't be something like: "I love your photo, it's great!" It must actually be constructive.

...since this is M&A though, not a cult, I think maybe more specific guidelines might be nice for those who don't frequent this corner of the site/don't care about content. In addition, videos for critique can end up long, like, 7-8 min long, and that's a lot of shots, each with its successes and its failures that are often worth mentioning individually. The depth of the critiques I'm seeing in the photo cult probably wouldn't for a 3 minute video (although it might for something under a minute).

We'd also need a mod to look after it...TWOODS WHERE U AT?!?

Yeah I agree with you on that one. Seeing as we already have a photo critique thread we don't really need a second one in m/a. Maybe we could make the m/a one just for video and put a link to the photo cult thread in it as well.

When the time nears, let's make a separate callout for suggestions for these guidelines (we can make them here if no one's opposed to it, I just don't want to get too far off topic). We'll post and discuss ideas and narrow down the criteria to such that the conditions are specific enough to ensure that everyone gets a good critique yet open enough that everyone, regardless of skill level, can post.

Posting in the thread just to critique and not to post videos should be encouraged, as I expect this thread will receive a lot of video traffic.

Also, I really don't like the singular "critique my edit" sticky thread. it would fill up with videos and you would never know who's quoting what video and it would just become incredibly unorganized and confusing... HOWEVER, maybe a sticky thread called "Critiques", where kids can post a link to their critique thread with a brief summary of the video so people can decide which ones they want to critique? or even a "Critiques" sticky where kids would post their video and then a link to the individual critique thread so you could watch the video in the sticky and then go to the thread to comment on it. That would also be useful for people who are willing to read and watch a lot of edits to see what they should do right and wrong because they'll be able to access all of the critique threads from one organized place...

Jamie knows about that thread, I think we're going to make a 'how to' thread where people can post tips and it will have links to threads like yours, Jamie's flash thread, ect.

We've never had a problem with things getting messy in the photo cult, granted it's because we can delete posts pretty easily because of the way mod-ing works. I do agree with you for M/A but I don't think that the multi thread idea really solves the problem we have. I'll think about it and see what I can come up with.

personally, i don't think a thread like this would work that well in m&a. however, i wouldn't mind being proven wrong about that.

i just could see it being so cluttered with shitty gopro edits after about a week that i would never click on that thread.

Cannot stress this enough, it would be such a big help.

The initial trial could start and M&A, and who knows, maybe it would work elsewhere. There would still be the actual mods, but specific mods for M&A could really do wonders. Now I wouldn't want it to take away from certain members posting and what not, but it could be just to help out.

Well, the only thing a regular mod can do is delete. We don't have the ability to sticky/unsticky so you'd have to rely on a red name anyways. If you need anything just shoot me a PM though - I don't think they're gonna go ahead with forum mods since all you'd get is delete power, and a reg mod can do that for you anyway.

I'm stoked to see you guys taking control of this forum though, its really great.

Not such a good idea I think. Sticky's should be for things that are 'always' the samen and really unreleveant of what is actually in the post. For a B/S/T thread the content is really important, more so than in a 'what's your favorite song'.

Sticky's with valuable information (unlike threads where everyone just postwhores) should get updated regularly. There's a lot of good threads out there, but many are outdated or just could use an update.
