What do you guys think about this? Shea Flynn hitting an "epic" war monument.

Part of me thinks it should be off limits because of what it represents.

I dunno I'm kinda divided on this subject... I mean of course he has no intention of disrespecting the monument, maybe even all the opposite, but it's hard to justify damaging it even if it's only minimal damage

It's like a church it should be off limits because the group that mantains it most likely has very limited finding and the scraping off the paint would look bad.

its such a hard thing to judge but I wouldn't hit it, no matter how perfect.
For me there are three questions when choosing whether to hit stuff, skating or skiing:

1) Is it going to cause reasonable offense?
By reasonable I mean will it offend someones deeply held belief. Some people can get high and mighty about any handrail or ledge and that doesn't bother me. But i wouldn't hit a religious building/monument or a war memorial. I'm not religious at all but I understand that those beliefs are deeply ingrained and so I don't want to offend them. Same goes for the war memorial, i'm a pacifist but I realise that monuments are of genuine significance to families etc

2) Is it an individual's private property?
I don't want to be damaging someone's house or car or whatever.

3) Could I end up hurting an innocent bystander?
Self-explanatory, usually solved by havings spotters etc anyway.

Might sounds stupid but thats how i've done it since i was skateboarding at 11 and it pretty much still holds skiing mid-twenties.

Thing looks seriously sweet but yeah seems a bit disrespectful. I'd be offended if it was like something with names and stuff but this thing is pretty indestructible/not personal looking. Hope he got a good shot it looks fun.

I don't think it was bonking actual gravestones, but riding through a graveyard to a gap or something.

And while some on here are slightly against it while others find nothing wrong with it, I'm leaning towards the off limits side.

It's obviously a very significant object to a large group of people and should left alone, kinda like how someone up there ^^ was talking about religious objects and such.

Yes. I'd love to see shots of them hitting controversial things in the stept movie. And riding thru a graveyard to a gap is so BA. As long as the objects aren't disrespected, I don't see why not

It's not about the risk of hitting something like this (i.e. repercussions from the authorities), it's about not damaging something (no matter how small the damage would be) that represents respect towards those who served the country.

it might have been offensive to some, but i think that's the name of the game. what part of freestyle skiing isn't offensive to some people? it's urban skiing, it's off limits either way, it's part of skiing. if shea wants to do that and get a sick shot, then fuck it he will. that should be everyone's attitude in freeskiing.

i bet if instead of a picture, there was a video of him doing a huge floaty blind 4 method, no one would be questioning ethics.

Stept probably showed it more attention then anyone in the past years. So many people are oblivious to these monuments and what they represent. I dont understand how this can be perceived as disrespectful at all if its in a public setting.

On another note those guns were designed to shoot massive projectiles, i dont think a skier is gonna damage anything.

Such a tough call. Looks like a sick feature and I bet it would look far more awesome on film, but it is easy to see why it would be offensive. However, there have been so many urban shots on random sculptures that could have well been memorials of some kind. Just because its obviously a war memorial shouldn't necessarily make it off limits. No one (at least not that I know of) was offended when Cam Riley hit the Breck dub-kink and someone actually died on that.

Also, is this the first true cannon rail someone's done? A mountain should totally buy an old howitzer and use it as a feature.

It really doesn't offend me at all. People have jibbed gravestones... dead people are dead. People have jibbed sculptures -- I just see it as a different interpretation of the artist's creation. I know it would offend some people, and I might not jib a monument for fear of offending some people, but I think doing it is pretty ballsy.

this mindset would kill all urban skiing. nothing that anyone hits is "theirs" and getting permission only happens maybe 5% of the time.

if this is actually is a war monument, and it's got signs up saying it's dedicated to people that lost their lives, then yeah i might not hit it out of respect (personally). but if someone else decides too i'm not going to think any less of them.

as far as someone saying churches should be off limits, that's garbage as well. some of the coolest architecture and spots are at churches, so why not show a different interpretation of enjoying the art?

I agree with most people in this thread.

for example, in a downtown park in my city right next to my school there is a tank. it's not a monument or a memorial, just an old tank with a flag next to it. I think it's dedicated to a group of people or something, but it's completely set up for something like this. kids climb on it every day, there is no fence around it, and it never gets damaged anyways. it even used to be open and you could sit in it, but in the early 90s a kid suffocated inside it so they cemented the hatch closed.

if this cannon that stept was hitting is anything like the tank then i'd say it's completely fair game.

disagree. I dont really hit much urban, but even if a church does have good spots, its pretty disrespectful. Some churches dont really make much $ as it is, and if your scraping paint off of a handrail and making it look like shit, then the church is gonna want to pay to get it fixed and thats coming out of their pocket. not to mention, its a place of worship.

Might be different for you, but that my look on it.

Fuck church, especially because I just saw something on T.V last night about how some church has a giant aquarium in it and then they paid the Tanked people to put a 6 foot cross into the tank. How the fuck did they get the money for that?

Well that does not look like a memorial or gravestone. I would say it's fine. Look it is just a canon and people could easily climb on it and shit and it wouldn't matter.

I also think the cop was sort of doing his job, I do not know the background info but I assume he was just ticketing them for trespassing/damaging on the property.

@OP this is one picture do you really know if it is a memorial or anything about it or is it just a random canon that represents military. If you do not then you can't really make much of an argument against, that goes for making mine for it.

If it is the place in Portland i think it is, or any of the many forts around New England no one died there. A lot of forts are in New England from WWI and WWII were made to protect from Naval attacks that never happened. So it is not really disrespecting anyone because no one died at there locations.

A lot of these forts are summer locations, I'm surprised that they got caught because no one goes to these places in the winter.
