There's a place near where I live that is common spot for cliff jumping. The water below is plenty deep and there's hardly any hazards aside from the inherent risks of cliff jumping. The top jump is probably 30-35 ft. My question is: what is the danger in attempting flips off of it? It's not quite high enough to really mess you up because I've seen videos of people slamming and they came out alright. I'm a strong swimmer. Is there any reason for me to fear flipping?
no just as long as you don't land on you're face, swallow a bunch of lake (river?) water and start choking underwater, then not be able to concentrate on where you are in the water, then try to breathe in and almost drown, pass out, your friends have to dive in to get you, then they call an ambulance and you come off with a bunch of medical bills,
That is high enough to knock yourself out is you land poorly, such as a bellyflop. If you are not very familiar with flips from this height, make certain you have friends nearby who have lifeguard training and can get you out of the water.
most of my friends and i are lifeguards so that isn't an issue. so basically, avoid face first contact and i shouldn't end up with more than a couple bruises? freak accidents excluded...
Partially correct. There are other injuries that can be sustained. You can also knock yourself out if you land flat on your back. A friend of mine broke a rib just by hitting the water awkwardly from 28 feet. The heights you are discussing, while not extreme, do carry with them inherent danger.
saw some kid doing a running jump off the highest highdive of them all olypic wise(40 ft) and right when he went off he slipped and somehow ended up back-flopping, his heart stopped and later died. Scary shit watched it happen from the top.
30-35 feet is plenty high enough to mess someone up. just have someone with you in case you land on your back/front have the wind knocked out and start to drown.
Well I used to do 10 meter platform diving and I have seen kids taken to the hospital for a belly or back flop and 10 meaters is about 32 feet but then again there were trying 3+ flipsso just be careful
You will be fine. The cliffs that I jump/flip off of are around that same hight. Its all just being comfortable with free falling in the air and being able to control your body.
My buddy tried his first gainer off them and over rotated the fuck out of it and slapped pretty damn hard on his back. It will hurt if you flop on your back/side/belly/face but its not enough of an impact to cause serious injury's.
I got a gnarly bruise from back flopping 13 feet to the water. I landed straight on my back. If your confident in flipping go for it but if you fuck up it will hurt.
you might get called a pussy, but wear a lifejacket on your first few attempts. this will protect you a lot if you land wrong, especially if you get knocked out
I think the angle of the shot makes it look smaller than it is. I've heard speculations that it is around 30 feet. I will time a jump and calculate it.
ive never heard anything like that, but ive been doing it whenever i try something new or if im not used to the jump. ive never had a problem. some of my friends do this too
This.
Also if you have a local pool practice off that. They'll be around 10 feet so you'll be fine. At a water park I misty 9'd a 23 foot cliff into a pool. /claim
First time I over rotated and it suked though.
Theres a 20 ft and a 28 ft (brought the measuring tape last weekend). I'm too pussy to try flipping it, but my neighbor does occasionally. You can do it if you land in a reasonable position.
I'm talking in the 80+ foot range. where if it's at all loose on you you're going to want to keep going deeper in the water while the life jacket is going to want to stay on the surface and the only thing stopping this are your arms.
just dont land on your face. also being completely serious if you land wrong water could go up your but and rupture your internal organs but i think you should be fine at that height
okay, that is definitely at least 30 ft, but the water at the bottom of a water fall is way more aerated than a flat lake, so it hurts about a million times less to land in.
Planning on going to the pool tomorrow to make sure I have my flips down and awareness in the air. I'll bring a life jacket when I do it off of the big cliff. I'll bring my camera and try to get some stuff on film. I'm super pumped; supposed to go Friday.
Try to progress up to the 30 footer. Go on a 10 then a 20 then maybe the 30. Would you try you first backflip on a large jump, probably not. You might try it on a 20 ft jump then work up to bigger, do you get what I'm saying?
