Early rise: hate one, hate 'em all... or just a bad experience?

Is it typical that if someone doesn't like an early rise ski they won't like most/all of them... or do you just have to keep trying to find one you like?

See, obviously with regular camber there's a ski for you, you just have to find it... but I wasn't so sure if it was the same for early rise due to the shape concept.

(I rode alphas for a year and just couldn't mesh with them, it was like the ski and I were never working together... thats the best I can explain it. It seemed like I was always catching edges, and they felt kinda washy.)

This is exactly how i felt about the ski, it was just a ski nothing more nothing less. I was actually happy when i wrecked them. Bought ar7 and love them now, i will never go back to a rocerd ski again.

The alphas have super minimal rocker.
They also suck.
The rocker is not what is messing you up, it is the sidecut.

Get some rockerd skis that don't suck.

also, skis with early rise/ rocker have to be tuned/detuned properly or they are a nightmare.

Well, I tried the alpha/halo and didnt like them. But I have a pair of kung fujas and salomon 2012 and I love them both.

this is dumb. taper doesn't matter at all for groomers and park- in fact it probably helps by saving weight. in pow, the taper helps cut into the untouched snow at the tip of the ski. but when you're in park or on flat groomers, the tapered part of the ski never really touches the snow, unless i guess you're buttering or something... but he's not complaining about buttering. it's not like you'd be able to carve around on the rockered tip/tail of your armadas if they had sidecut and not taper.

i skied my friends alpha 1's and didn't really care for the rocker, but loved the lightness and snappyness of the ski. so i just bought some pipe cleaners at the end of the season, which are essentially the same thing but not rockered and a bit softer. haven't skied them yet but they look fun as shit.

early rise is awesome in proportion, and if you are skiing the right terrain with the right ski. For example you could not ski groomers with a hellbent, but they are sick in pow, and then there are the other skis with the happy medium like the line blend. More and more skis are resorting to the little bit of early rise in the tip, but for groomers, there is nothing like a pure race ski.

demo another ski with rocker so that you can see. If you end up hating it too, then you will know! If you like it then you could buy another one with rocker.

this is obviously true but not necessarily bad. In general I prefer the predictable effective edge length of a tapered ski to the variable effective edge of a rockered but not tapered ski on groomers. plus the reduced swingweight is nice. Its a matter of preference.

That said on the Alpha/Halo, with the short effective edge, the taper and the sharp rocker, it does make for a weird feeling ski. Some love/some hate them. I thought they were ok but not my favorite ski. I skied my Bacons in the park pretty much all season, they had taper and rocker but I loved them, just a little on the heavy side.

Personally I found that for rockered park skis having a symmetrical ski and rocker really helped with predicability and playfullness. My two favs were the Salomon 2012 and ON3P Filthys. K2 also makes one but I haven't ridden it ( I think its the press?).

It depends on how much early rise. The early rise on pow skis on hard pack sucks. But a little early rise can make a ski more versatile plus other things

i had the alpha 2 and i felt like they had no pop, they were a bit to stiff for my liking. i suggest looking into a better early rise ski such as the filthy rich. ive heard nothing but good things about them, Im thinking of grabbing a pair for next season.

I'm debating between the SFB and Opus. Is the SFB gonna be floaty enough for 30" of champagne and still perform?

I'm also going to be skinning with it a bit. I am afraid the opus will cause a big gap between my groomer skis and pow/bc skis. I need it to ski crud and choppy pow every now and then

This, the elf shoe thing they have going on with the Halos and Alphas is weird. It makes them really flimsy and makes them wash out easily. If you try to do a nose butter or a nollie the tips dig into the ground. They can't speak for all rockered skis at all.

I also disliked the Halos that I rode for a couple runs. They just felt dead to me. I would say try some different skis. I bought K2 Domains for next year and they feel pretty poppy. Rocker in those is a lot less, though. Try some different skis to see what you like.

It's funny you mention those two things... First, I did feel like they were really washy.

Second,... first time I rode them... on the way to the chair... first run ever... went to nose butter, the noses dug in and I ate shit. lol. It was a bad omen right from there.

I have no opportunity to demo or try any other rockered skis. I don't think anyone in my city has any others I could try other than the alpha 1s I sold. And shops here dont demo any twins.

What's the best way to do them?

Also..

LIB jib nas reCurve...? Any thoughts? Described as soft, and magne would be nice for Ontario. My main concern... weight. They look like they'd be tanks with poor swing weight and responsiveness... anybody know?
