Anybody dyed a metal binding?

Considering dying my look pivots, but I was wondering if it was possible, I know people that do it for plastic but I didn't really think it'd work for a metal binding, anyone tried it?

dying wouldn't work at all...there are no pores for dye to be absorbed into like with plastic. I would also stay away from painting it. Chances are, unless you completely disassemble probperly, there will be paint in areas you won't want it to be that could prevent your binding from functioning properly.

just wondering, there's various ways of dying metal so I wasn't sure if it could really be done for a binding.

You would need to anodize them, which involves an anode, a cathode and electric current. I'm guessing you don't have the means to do this so I would just drop it imo.

I believe it's when you heat those little balls of powder and put a piece of metal inside, vaguely remember doing something like it in shop class 4 years back.

Powder coating would be the ideal, and I suspect is how they do the factory finish on some metal bindings. Bear in mind that it adds a thin layer to the object so things with very tight tolerances might not fit well any more and you better be damn sure you mask off any threads. It's also surprisingly affordable, the prep work has to be damn good though.

If I was going to do it I would completely disassemble the binding then get them sand-blasted or acid dipped, whichever was appropriate, to completely remove all the old finish, then get them powdercoated.

disassembling a binding is not a good idea
-one your warranty would be gone so if you fucked up you just lost a good chunk of change
-if you manage to take it apart and put it back together, you could have messed something up, and it may not release correctly.

bad idea all over, better of not tampering with it.

but that is just my 2 cents

You make some very good points, +k.

Mind you, I know some people who've owned P18's for about 300 years, due to them being bulletproof, and they're looking beat as hell now. So if someone could find a way to freshen them up a bit that wouldn't be a terrible thing.

Sort of agree here. Most of the metal binders on the market are race stock of one variant or another, and unless you've got experience, they can be a real bitch to work on.

Even if you were to get them powder coated, it wouldn't significantly change their look unless you changed the pieces of plastic as well.

I guess nobody caught the fact that I was joking about powder coating bindings. 

One of the key steps involved in powder coating is to bake the item in a kiln once it is sprayed with the powder.  This is what gives powder coating the smooth, tough finish.   Good luck not wrecking your bindings in a kiln.

If you stripped them down to just the metal housings I can't see any problem with them going in a kiln. I know a powdercoater, he said they usually cook stuff at about 180C which shouldn't be an issue for some lumps of metal.

Lumps of metal with important plastic parts.  Like AFDs.  And DIN indicators.

And grease.  Lots of grease to ensure that everything moves nicely.
