FIS screwing with skiing again...

Article about the new rules of sponsor size during race.
Basically they don't want ski manufacters to be able to advertise during races (or harldy...) Which leads to the question: why would theses manufacturers want to sponsor athletes in the long run?
Mostly likely this comes from angry Blue-Chip sponsors that dont want to be ambush during their FIS sponsorship deals. The money is going to companies that have nothing to do with skiing and that will will never give back to skiing...

In any competition (like the olympics) it has been this way, in most every sport. You can have a smaller logo (like nike or adidas makes team uniforms and has a small logo somewhere). US Ski Team has some sponsors on their race suits, but again, smaller sized.

I don't see the issue here?

do you really think they gonna treat the freestyle athletes any different?

so, since freestyle skiing is in the olympics and you will need to qualify doing fis events, it is something the community should care about.

to op: this sucks big time, only reason is the profit maximization for fis (they can charge more from their sponsors (sponsors of the world cup) if they can ensure that no other company logos will be around during the events.)

eventually this will lead to a situation where skiers won`t be able to put themselves on the market as individuals. except you`re a self-marketing genius like jon olsson.

Last I checked FIS included Halfpipe, Slopestyle, Ski cross and will be governing events/also apply during Olympics. This has huge implications for athletes that derive a substantial amount of their income from their headgear sponsors (logos on helmets, hats).

the fis governs the skiing/snowboarding portion of the olympics. im sure nbc or whoever has some corporate deals for the advertising, i dont think the FIS determines what advertisements go where when they dont govern the entire olympics...

Always, huh. This is the second time I've replied to a post of yours. And it actually irritates me to do so, I get no pleasure out of these Olympic shenanigans the further we go into it and seeing people say stuff along the lines of "There HAVE TO BE rules" or as you said, 'guidelines' with such pure and innocent intentions makes me an unhappy camper.

Precisely the problem.

Thankfully, FIS doesn't tell most skiers what to do, but I can guarantee that they will make a joke out of the new disciplines this first go round. That shared judging nonsense is only the tip of the iceburg.

probably because it's highschool and your races or whatever already have sponsors. I know that for track and xc we aren't even allowed to wear club-related gear at meets.
but companies sponsor these athletes to make money off of them and get exposure for themselves, so if nobody notices their logos/equipment/whatever there isn't really a point in sponsoring athletes. I mean they can do ads and other endorsement stuff, but the whole point of sponsorship is to represent the companies at professional events. highschool mountain biking is a little different.

Other than the Olympic's major sponsors, visa, coke, etc, athletes are never allowed to show their individual sponsors. If I remember correctly, at Torino skiers/snowboarders with Oakley goggles had to wear straps without the O's on them.

I see your point but this is not Dew or X this is the Olympics, I think it is a bit different. It is a larger international event representing countries not brands. Also IDK about other FIS events, I think the olympics is on a n entire different scale though.

its probably because of the major sponsors of the olympics were unhappy with the simple advertising the athletes show by their gear. they dont want other brands to have as much of a spotlight as the major sponsors considering the money that is forked out by visa, mountain dew, etc. thats the only logic i see.

Uh......look at the change that occurred in GS skis. That happened, despite mountains of rational argument to the contrary by many important people in racing. Look up Ted Ligity's rants on that issue.

These idiots lost our trust years ago, and they've done nothing to regain it lately. I say it again: the Olympics are going to be a five ringed circus for skiing. Especially if the judging sucks, because it's the biggest sports stage in the world and only happens every four years--the threads about it will last forever.

sometimes i dare to believe that all this screwing over rules in competitive skiing might actually be good for the sport since it might shift sponsors interests more towards the videography/photography and documentary side of the sport which imho is much more appealing than the competitive side of skiing ....

unfortunately this is the world everyone wanted. did we really think we could just show up to the party and run the show? i'm still blown away that FIS is allowing the AFP to have input on judging.

this is the way it's always been. i'm not sure how the rules apply for world cup events but i do recall that in Torino, a lot of mogul athletes had black tape over their skis so as not to show the brand. i know that some also covered logos on their goggles as well.

im pretty sure the rules are that if you're receiving financial compensation from companies, you're not allowed to show their logos because the Olympics are supposed to be about amateur sport. you are however, allowed to wear the logos of companies that support your national sport association.

i'm interested in seeing what happen in regards to national team uniforms for the slope and pipe events. i believe as it stands now, the Canadian and American teams will both be wearing Columbia suits.
