New to Denver

Hey fellow Colorado NS'ers! I recently (last week) moved to Denver, CO (I'm living very close to downtown), and I would greatly appreciate any and all suggestions for establishments with good food (and booze), attractions (places to hike, disc golf courses, see wildlife, museums, local art exhibits, etc), and anything ski related (or gyms/foam pits). I'm working for the USFS as an archaeological technician out of Morrison, CO, so anything related out that way is game-on too. I'm not into the super-touristy stuff, more looking for local perspectives on chill places to go after work/on the weekends. Thanks a million and +K for awesome advice!

One of my favorite places to hike is hanging lake. It can be touristy, but if you go on a weekday its not usually too bad. Not a long hike but I don't think the scenery can be beat. Definitely something to check out. When I go out its usually down on Blake St. There are so many bars, you will find one you love. If you have any questions or you want someone to hike with let me know. I have not been in denver for too long, but long enough to find some fun stuff.

i like to go frolfing at johnny roberts which is on like 60th & wadsworth or something around there, jump street is really fun to go jump on the tramp at haha. Red rocks has a lot of fun hiking trails as well as Matthew Winters and Apex if you like mountain biking or trail running.

Thanks for the heads up! I walked down to Alley Pizza tonight for $1 PBR and a couple slices and it was bomb. I'm definitely liking Denver.

Come to the southern San Juans/Weminuche!


Piedra river. It can get busy. I saw 3 people last weekend :O. Or Weminuche wilderness area. Kinda crowded 1-2 people for an 8 mile hike

I recommend going to a Red Rocks concert asap. Check out 16th Street Mall downtown, lots of good restaurants/bars/stores. LoDo as well. Go to a Rockies game. Take a brewery tour. The Jiberish store is cool to check out. Get a 30 rack and tube down the platte river. The Confluence Park area is really cool and has free concerts every thursday night all summer. Washington Park is huge, has a ton of stuff to do, and is always packed with every newly college grad in Denver.

If you like real beer, Colorado has an unreal selection of extremely good beers. Go to Falling Rock on Blake and enjoy an enormous selection on tap to include locals, US, and foreign. Wynkoop Brewery actually has a few bomb choices too. The Cherry Cricket is a great place to get a burger, but the best burger in Denver is probably found at My Brothers Bar over by the Jiberish store. The Rodizio grill in Denver is the best Brazilian steak place I've been to, or it's at least tied with a few of my favorites from my travels to South America (pricey but very worth it, the one in Fort Collins isn't nearly as good).

Those are some of my favorite beverage/food places but Denver isn't short on a good time. Explore yourself, just don't go East of Coors field or to 5 points at night.

Snooze is second to Breckenridge's Daylight Donuts for breakfast. Third is the Pantry in Green Mountain falls, holy shit I want a pancake and biscuits and gravy now.

I like them both but I remember Fogo de Chao being significantly more expensive. Haven't been there in a long time though so that might be ass backwards.

Any true denverite has to visit the Buckhorn Exchange on 10th at least once. It's expensive like any steakhouse but so delicous.

Massive thanks to ALL of you! I've been exploring a little - went to 1st Friday Art Show at Icelantic this past Friday night which was so much fun. I have been to Pagosa Springs - I was at Wolf Creek this past October and it was incredible. I'll plan on getting out a lot more once I get paid, but with all these suggestions, I've got a healthy list going.

threads. i just moved to denver 2 weeks ago. i know my way around denver pretty well but im definitely looking for some new attractions.

AND A JOB!!! student, but i can and want to work full time all summer if anyone has any insight.

There are some really fun watering holes in the highlands. Check these spots out:

Denver Beer Company - fun spot in lohi, pop into the Jiberish store across the street
Forest Room 5 - cool vibe, kind of a hipster scene
Linger - one of the best roof top patios in Denver
Williams and Graham - speakeasy spot, drinks are a bit pricey, but it's a good place to grab a moscow mule and they serve a lot of local booze

Every Wednesday night there is Denver Cruisers. It can get pretty rowdy. http://www.denvercruisers.com/

Gus, Jelly is better than Snooze.

Definitely hit the YSL exhibit before it's done in early July.

If you want dive bar recommendations, I have a list of about 40 that I've frequented now and can point you in the right direction.

What part of town are you living in? I take it highlands since you walked to pizza alley?

Looking for a good Italian joint, the Garlic knot is a great place. Pizza is sooooo good and tastes like it is straight from ny.

Definitely worth a visit. We open to the public for drop ins this weekend, and the new super tramp is probably the most fun thing I've done in a long time.

Vine Street Pub, order them Tim's Style, they are fried then grilled.. baller as fuck. cash only though.
if you're of age Pub on Penn on Wednesday nights has 5$ all you can eat wings and 7$ pitchers.. hit me up if you go, usually there for a couple hours.

as far as italian goes ^^, Shells and Sauce is great over in Congress Park, as is Osteria Marco on Larimer Square.

Pizza by the slice - Benny Blancos or, Pizza whole, Protos.

And you absolutely MUST eat at Tom's Home Cookin'. Its near Cervantes. They make a few dishes every day and close as soon as they run out, around 2pm or so. Always wonderful.

Agreed.

I am going to take this time to chime in on brunch in Denver. Brunch in my favorite meal and Denver is my favorite city (except for my hometown of Pittsburgh). Denver has great brunch spots if you're patient. Some of my favorites:

Snooze: GET THE EGGS BENEDICT

Jelly: Bacon Pancakes

Dozens: Cinnamon rolls

Wild Eggs: Does a great job of accompanying larger groups

There are so many more and if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.

This. You get so much variety in a 5 block radius. All the food is amazing. In all the booming parts of the state you can find very good food. Beacon falls cafe in Beacon has the best brunch I have ever had.

I have not eaten at the recommended places in the thread, but I am not particularly pleased with the local fare.

The mexican food is very good though. It's very clean compared to the greasy new york mexican food

Check out Root Down. It's in the Highlands off of 33rd and Osage. Bottomless blood orange mimosas for brunch on the weekends. It gets crazy busy but if you can get in, that place is G.

Thank you to everyone who commented up on this post! I've been large an in charge (mostly - my house was robbed a couple of weeks ago - bad bad juju to the person who took my laptop and purse, but THANKFULLY I'm here to write this message - I was at home asleep when it happened, they came in through an unlocked/open window). This weekend I went to 1Up, Denver Museum of N & S, Mt. Evans (still have yet to see a big horned sheep but the goats and marmots were cool), went tubing in Boulder, and drank some beers at the Buck Snort. Oh, also had dinner at the Buckhorn Exchange, super expensive, but I figure I work hard so why the hell not be treated? I'm headed back down south to NM tomorrow, so keep it real until next time, CO!
