Fixed Gear

This is a thread devoted to fixed gear bicycles. Anyone on here ride them? Post what you use for parts and pictures of your bike(s).

I just finished mine the other day, I currently have the following:
Kenda 700c white tires ($24.99 Amazon)
Peugeot 61cm frame and fork ($30.00 off Craigslist)
Original 170mm silver and black crank ($60 on Amazon, awesome deal, strong, and looks sick)
18 tooth cog rear wheel and a front wheel (not sure on models) ($50 for pair)
Brand new Peugeot bottom bracket ($50)
Easton white grips ($9.99)
Straight bar handlebar (Free)
Older Cannondale front brake (Free)
=224.98 in total

I sanded down the bike and repainted the frame black and the fork white. I have chrome accents where the chrome was originally on the bike. I will post a picture as soon as I find my memory card reader.I am really digging the bike and biking around Burlington, VT. One thing I do suggest is not buying an older french frame as parts tend to be pricy and hard to find (ex:$50 bottom bracket, it was 15 for a japanese one)

My ghetto flatland fixie project is coming along. It's is going to be Rediculous. Iif it works out as planned ill post a video on here. Small bars, small wheels, small gearing. Good for nothing except wheelies and barspins

You have got to be fucking kidding me. What a ridiculous waste of time.

I don't get fixed gears. How the hell do you people deal with hills? Just grunt through it? Any gearing that will allow you to even get to the top of a reasonable incline will be utterly useless on the way down. I rode one of these things for 20 minutes out of the shop and it was totally impractical. Just get a real bike...

i really like the look of fixies, but they are so damn expensive and i prever a bike with brakes bought for 5 euros from an streeybump

It's not only that, though, it's like... fine you want a bike to ride around the neighbourhood maybe to the grocery store or short trips, whatever. Flat terrain, not to actually ride for real. Cool, maybe you have a bike for that purpose, it's not like we don't all have 10 pairs of skis. But have a real bike for actual riding. Don't even care if it's a road bike, cyclocross bike, touring bike, hybrid commuter, downhill, whatever you do, at least it's actually useful for something.

And that Bianchi conversion is just a monstrosity. Why you would use that frame is just painful, just to be ironic or what? If anything deserves a "fucking hipsters"...

Eh I like my Fixie/Single Speed for the uses I put to it, then again I'm not doing hellish hill climbs and 100 mile treks. They're great for around town cause really you don't need a multitude of gears for going around town, and most ride fixes for the pure control you have, the whole bike is controlled with your feet pretty much, your acceleration and your deceleration. granted they are defiantly not for everyone but single speeds also are quite fun too for just cruising around town if you have a do all gear ratio. Granted i have a old steel frame 10 speed for other types of adventures and my ghetto fixed gear has fallen upon hard times due to neglect, but mainly people harp on fixies because they don't understand the actual place and use of one and how they can be quite a lot of fun

oh and lastly, fixie are pretty much track bikes. You can haul on a fixie due to the nature of the momentum of the pedals once they are going. Since the pedals are already in motion its easier to keep a top speed because the work you put into the pedals isn't as high, thus why they can be great commuter bikes

So...I'm a fixed gear junkie, always have been. I can assure you, while fun and practical enough to get by just about anywhere once you get the hang of it, fixed gear bikes are terrible for your knees. Just an fyi. Good luck on the build!
