Don't take this the wrong way. Please don't - I'm not a dick.

I'll say it right outta the gate: this edit isn't critique worthy. You'll get one anyway (at least from me), but are you really proud about how it turned out? Not just under the circumstances, but in the grand scheme of things? You have the potential to make a much better video than this, on all levels.

If your response to this is that you're just starting out; then still, you shouldn't be asking for critiques because its the cold hard truth no matter what.

Now that all that is out of the way we can get down to business. It seems like to a large extent a lot of the "mistakes" of this edit are negligent/lazy. No tripod seems lazy. Misfocusing is lazy. Not uploading the video right is lazy. You know what I'm saying? You could have used the digital zoom focus assist to get your focus right. You could have white balanced. You could have spent two minutes clicking icons to reupload the video in the right sizing (although something's up with your sizing because the name title is outside of the video. I think your footage size and sequence size don't match at all). Its a bunch of easy stuff that you let go.

Some specific stuff:

I like the second shot, walking down the lanes. There's something about the wave motion to the shot that fits well.

The title: didn't like the font, didn't like the placing, didn't like the fact that there was a title in it at all. I don't know why there was an "n" before his first name, either.

The edit and the song didn't build together. They just didn't seem to fit. I didn't like the song, either, though, so that might factor into it for me.

I don't know what else to say. I don't know anything about you; your experience level (you have a 5dmkii so...?), your age, anything, but I will say this: I know you can make a better video than this (I sound like a disappointed high school teacher). I know you can. The failures of this video can be remedied with effort and attention. Go out, film more, edit more, try more, learn more, and when you make a product that you are truly proud of (not one you have to make excuses for) come back and post it for a critique.

I know this is all negative, I'm so sorry for that. You can do better and I bet you know that.

thanks, i know what you mean, and yeah I'm just looking for stuff like this, I just started filming/editing so i don't know too much about it, ad the N was there because it was edited in widescreen and wouldn't export right. and yeah I'm still learning, and this actually helped, thanks, and i don't think you're a dick. i know what you mean about the song as well, think that may have to do with the exporting, but not trying to make excuses, and yeah i have to buy a tripod haha.

So, based on this, here's some advice on what you should do next.

1) Let this video be a basis for improvement, not a quality benchmark. You should leap forward from this, not continue to reach this quality.

2) Tripod time. People will tell you to drop lots of dollars on a tripod and if you have a 5d chances are you have the dollars to drop. Regardless, something is better than nothing, so shove some sticks under that camera of yours. Look to spend more than $350 if you can. If you have questions on this searchbar it, there's tons of threads full of answers and advice.

3) Next time you have a second go out and film some stuff. Then come inside and edit it. Learn your program. Learn how to import, edit, and export with the right settings. This is so critical. Without this everything else pretty much just goes to shit.

4) Go to "Top Rated Videos" and watch them. Make a Vimeo account, start following some interesting channels, and watch what pops up in your newsfeed. Take note of the techniques you like and don't like, the visuals that appeal to you, and think about how you could use them in your videos. Get inspired! This is a great way to get new ideas and learn about new aspects of filming. It's like research, but fun.

5) Once you've got 3 and 4 down, you're ready to make another edit. But this time you should focus on your filming. Pay attention to your focus. Pay attention to your lighting and your colors. Give attention to the little details, the framing the movement. Don't be fancy, be simple. Being simple and covering the bases is more important than attempts to be fancy at the expense of the basics. (You can combine this with (3), I suppose, if you want, but remember, the more videos you make, the more experience you'll have, and the more you'll learn).

The more aspects of your video you can control, the better your video will be. Learn how to control and harness the powers of your tools. You have an amazing camera, a powerful editing program [up for debate but w/e], and (hopefully) a mind full of ideas. Learn how to use your computer and camera to take those ideas in your head and put them on a screen. Practice, practice, practice, pay attention to details, and keep practicing. You'll improve and once you do this, you'll have truly critique-worthy work.

For now, though, your path is simple, straightforward, and well-traveled, and doesn't really require the opinions of others. We all walked down this road and now its your turn. For the first distance you don't need us to hold your hand; its pretty clear what you gotta do to make your videos better and you know it. You'll want critiques when the time comes, but now is not the time.

first off, i know you know this but the camera is very shaky. I also thought you could cut some of the shots a little more on the editing. there was too much time before and after each trick. Lastly, the song wasn't good with the type of edit this was. Hope this helps for your next edit

because my computer is being really slow, but I'm probably going to use compressor and re-upload it(again)

new edit, used a tripod, i think its better, took some advice that you gave me ad what not, some advice on this one? better? worse? anything.

Word! Glad to see you got your hands on a tripod. I'll keep this short because my last posts still kinda say a lot of what I'd like to say.

I love the shot at 0:08. So simple, but that wide shot is really effective.

Your biggest area for improvement needs to be your camera movement; start thinking about how you want your camera to move and work hard to bring that into reality. You did it a little bit filming the bounces, and on some of them, your up/down motion was actually pretty decent. The tripod definitely helps, huh? On some of them though you've got major shaking issues, and what's going on with the horizontal movement at :15?

Overall this is lightyears better than your first. You gotta get the basics before you can fly. This is so much better, your focus was better, the colors were more reasonable, the shots were simpler and therefore more welll done; just on another level. You should be happy with the improvement.

Don't let happy be complacent. Also keep in mind that whatever you're doing is killing the quality of the footage. Somehow your footage is coming out of an incredible camera looking like something someone shot with a potato. Learn your workflow, read some stuff on google about your editing program and export settings and upload tips. That'll really help you boost your quality.

yeah, the lens I'm working with right now isn't great for this kind of stuff, but getting a better one hopefully soon, and were you watching in 720? but i think i may have figured why it isn't great, has th do with the program, and yeah the tripod is waaay better, thanks for the constructive criticism on this one+ last one, helping me improve a lot.

Oops I suck, I had it in 240. That explains a lot. Still, you probably could have shot that in 1080...

yeah it was shot in 1080, just exported in 720 or else it takes a crazy time to upload/load when watching.

Haha i like thew cushion, tricks were dank not a huge fan of the filming tho. 1080 would make it alot better.

some of the shots the tramp is just out of the frame at the bottom, which i find annoying but heaps better than ur first and there wasn't really any finish it just ended.

some solid tricks for sure! color seemed good, the only thing that really bothered me was the framing, it was off in just about every shot. If you plan to stay that close to the subject maybe try a wider lens or just take a step back and get the full picture in 1080p and edit in a 720 timeline and do zooming/tightning in post. dope tricks!

I liked the way you used no tripod and switching from focus and out of focus, the music sound quality is one of my pet peeves, one of the easiest things to do and makes the video a lot better.

totally thought i was in that last edit for a second since i always wear that grey/salmon tank and black shorts at my gym and my hair is similar to his haha

I noticed that about the colour grading, still gotta learn about his program haha, thanks, and 5d only shoots in 30 fps.

no no no. shutter speed ≠ fps. 30fps is fine, but shutter speed can be used to reduce motion blur. when i'm shooting skiing, i'm at a 1/250sec shutter speed, which is pretty good for action sports.

Your shots are getting better and better, but one thing I noticed was that this was literally 2 minutes of bangers. There was no filler, no lifestyle shots, nothing to add depth or setting or character or personality to your video. I really miss that. 2 minutes of watching people bounce gets old, you know? You can't just slap clips into the timeline, you gotta order them and cut them with thought and planning so that your video does not get old.

Just my two cents on this one. Next time you go shoot do your best to capture more than just the tramping. Get some smiles and some faces and some build up, etc.

nice job! just a couple of tips for you next time:
