People who do graffiti in the woods

so today i go for a stroll at my nearest hiking trail: Cotton Hallow, Glastonbury, CT. everything is green and lovely after a few days of rain, and the Trout Brook was flowing high and fast. everything was perfect and i was really enjoying the walk since i had been away from home for 2 months and i missed Cotton Hallow dearly. but after walking around a sharp bend in the trail, i spotted a bunch of graffiti and tags high up on a popular cliff-jumping spot. i found it so awful and so frustrating that this beautiful place ive been visiting since i could walk now has a hideous, permanent, stain. it makes me wonder who has the nerve to deface part of something so majestic. one of my favorite things about Cotton Hallow is that besides the trail itself, the landscape appears very untouched by humans; it seems truly wild. of course, humans destroy nature all the time; strip malls, suburbs, and highways do a lot more damage to a forest than one kid with a can of spray paint, but the graffiti is like wounding and animal but not killing it. its cruel, has no benefit, and ruins a lot more than what was directly affected. now i need to go out of my way to buy a paint remover and spend my day tomorrow scrubbing at it instead of doing things i wanted to do. its just annoying, pointless, and rude, and i hope the members of NS have a little more sense of conservation than whoever chooses to do graffiti on a hiking trail.

I would be pissed if I saw graffiti in a place like you described. It pisses me off when I see it in my city ruining countless buildings, bridges, overpasses, highways, and other landmarks

and no i dont NEED to remove it, but im not going to count on anyone else doing it, trail crews usually just paint white or black over the graffiti and it looks just as bad.

wow i have severely underestimated the damages a can have spray paint can have. i literally had no idea it could render bridges, highways, and overpasses totally and utterly ineffective.

Graffiti keeps a ass-ton of inner city kids out of gangs. Wouldn't you rather a bunch of hoods be in a graff-crew that goes around tagging shit then joining a gang?

In my opinion I would rather more kids tag and do pieces in and around the city. It livens it up in my opinion and gives something a color apart from grey. It lets kids express themselves. If you go to Berlin, where graffiti is everywhere, you'll actually see people going to the city just to see the street art and take pictures of tags, pieces, and murals. Much better looking then NYC, Chicago, or LA.

Contrary to what you said, graffiti is written by a wide demographic, not 'shit head 12 year olds'. Ever heard of Dash Snow? Plently of normal, productive, independent human-beings write graffiti. I myself have tagged, stopped because I almost got caught, and attempted some pieces. I wasn't that good, lol, so I stopped.

I agree that vandalizing a natural landscape like you described is pretty fucking gay, and defaces the scenery and image of nature. I think street art should stick to exactly what it is: art on the street. I don't completely agree with Ski_the_east01, but I can guarantee you that a bunch of shit head 12 year olds did that piece of shit they call art. Kids like that give graffiti and street art a bad name. Also... gangs do not write graffiti, merely tag their territory. 5% of graffiti is gang-related. Just clearing that up :-)

@OP, thank you for being a good person and taking care of someone elses' horrible mistake, most people wouldn't do that.

Happened tome. I was biking in the woods the other day and saw a bunch of graffiti on a rock cliff thing. I was pissed, it really ruined the whole thing.

Sorry I should have clarified my rant. Graffiti art can definitely be cool, I know little about it but I have seen stuff from the big artist like banksy is all awesome. It's the tagging I cant stand because its ugly as fuck and absolutely pointless garbage

I didnt mean to lump all graffiti in together.... I do appreciate the difference between graffiti art murals and just crappy tags

Would you be opposed to someone tagging the spot with the name of the location in very nature colors? I would find that pretty cool personally. That I would consider graffiti. I enjoy looking at murals and large pieces that people do...

I would agree that it is annoying when someone does it in a place like you described but dont worry, eventually those kids will get caught or beat for tagging in the wrong spots. its bound to happen.

You cant tell me this isnt art. It takes talent to do this kind of shit.

The whole point of tagging is just to leave your mark somewhere, to show you've been there, or, in the case of crews, to show which crew has left the biggest mark on their society and holds the most territory... I know that sounds like gang-like but these are non-violent. Most kids out there aren't trying to make neighborhood stores look shitty, just leave their mark!

In essence it sounds dumb to someone who hasn't done it, but once you do it, you'd understand.

not really, hes more on point about graffiti than most people in this thread and actually understands where it came from and the motives behind it

the pretty pictures you all like are called street art, and are not graffiti. Graff is all about writing your name for yourself but mostly fame.

sorry for double post but im as down with nature as the OP. I enjoy graffiti alot but in a city with under 1million people its pretty fucking lame and i wouldnt mind punching people who spraypaint rocks in the face. Its almost worse than the original shit when some dumbass paints a huge white/grey rectangle over it to show whos the bossest rock painter around

tagging is stupid as fuck it just makes everything look terrible, as for piecing on trains and some other places it looks good, i always love to watch trains. when someone puts up a piece that they spent 2 hours on it will get destroyed in like 2 days but some one can put up 100 tags in the same amount of time and have like only 5 removed. i think citys should worry more about stupid ass tags, mabie remove some peices because they can lower the value of an area, not only would it cost less to remove 1 piece vs 100 tags there would be way less and everything would look better. as for street art people better fuck off, ive seen some amasing stuff get painted over and it just looks even shiter. this got painted over in shitty blue paint by my friends house, and you can still kind of see it through the blue but here it was before.

I'm a raft guide. About 13 miles into the trip, 3 miles from the nearest road, there is a rail road bridge that goes over the river.

Some kid I guide with told another kid that he wants to tag the bridge and was saying how sick it would be. The other kid was agreeing and encouraging him.

I wanted to punch both of them in the face.

It has been about 10 months and still no tag, so, that's a good thing.

just take a pickaxe and break off the bits that arent cooperating with the paint remover. Good luck. Shit pisses me off when people bring doggy bags on trails then just leave them. Whats the point? If your gonna fucking leave it in the woods dont add a shield of plastic that prevents it becoming fertilizer and leaves plastic out there

What's the point of "claiming" territory if you don't have anything to do with that place at all? If you're not selling drugs there, don't own any property there, don't have any business being there, why prove you can tag it? I don't have any pictures right now, but I'll snap a few this week.

Near a park around my house, there's this big plaza, on the end of the plaza space there was just a big brick wall. (100 ft long, 15 ft high)

In like 2 days, a local artist made a HUGE mural of all the creatures and people from Narnia. It's literally the sickest art I've ever seen, it looks super cool to have skaters or bikers ride in front of it and do tricks. Huge respect for the guy that can cover a giant wall 1500 sq. ft wall with actual art by himself.

Seems like people are sensitive to this issue and are getting defensive. Art or not, Putting paint on something that doesn't belong to you, without consent is fucked. Deserves a punch in the face and a bill for the clean up.


How would you feel if someone painted all over your favorite possessions? Like your house, car, skis, whatever you like best. Imagine some asshole painted some random picture on your shit. Sucks, makes you want to punch them in the face and make them buy you new shit.

Of course, art done right is cool.

i like graff and write it too, but i agree with not fucking with nature. some ass hats in my town went through the woods writing a-team everywhere, in my favorite park, and the most natural place around. i went back with some olive drab spray paint and wrecked half of what they wrote, and just sprayed a g and y in a few so they read gay team now.

This. It's inexcusable to tag or even make really dope murals (which I can respect and think are really cool) on anything that doesn't belong to you or you don't have premission deface. Anyone who thinks they can justify fucking up something they don't own is a douche and probably a hypocrite because you would flip if someone did it to your shit
