Weekend Setup, Wedding Video tips????

Dropped some major coin today and picked up a few items at the old shop. I am doing my first serious wedding this weekend will be back with an update of how the 5D III worked for anybody curious.  I also rented a 200mm F/2 to accompany that, anybody into shooting weddings I love advice or any past lessons learned.

I LOVE shooting weddings. I shoot with a FS100, NEX5n, Canon T3i.

Lenses: 70-200mm 2.8, 70-210 f4, Rokinon 35mm 1.4, Canon 50mm 1.8, Tokina 11-16mm, Canon 10-22mm, Sony 16-50mm 2.8

Audio: Sennheiser G3 x 2, Rode Mic

Stabilizers: CMR Blackbird and Glidecam 4000

Slider, Tripods.

Best thing is SHOW UP EARLY, Never stop rolling. Make sure you have crisp, clean audio, plan shots if need be. Don't be afraid to tell the bride, Hey can you move into this light, it will create a great shot for the trailer!

Always shoot with 2 cameras. NEVER EVER 1. Bad news bears real quick.

Your setup looks like blast! Can't wait to see how the 5D performs.

What kind of product do the clients want? Do they want a short? Or a full length video?

Thanks, playing around with the 200 today and it is by the far the sickest lens I have ever used.

i got my first L lens in the mail today (70-200 f4) stoked on that. Once i can replace my 17-50 with something kosher with full frame i'm going to save for the 5Diii, dat lowlight performance!

From my experience. DO NOT try to get fancy DURING the ceremony. Get your basic angle of the bride's face, groom's face, and one other angle that is more "straight on."

They key with the ceremony is good sound and solid stable shots.

You can get creative, artsy, and whatever else your heart desires during other parts of the wedding but please do not miss anything important.

In addition to the ceremony.....

-Speeches
-First dances
-Cake cutting
-Anything else that is unique to their wedding

Have fun, but remember to keep it simple if this is your first wedding so that you do not cut corners.

I wish I could re-shoot the first wedding I did but I can only learn from the past.

That is kinda my strategy, I few weeks a go I actually filmed my Aunts wedding just to get the feel of what to expect. To my defense I was half drunk the whole time and only equipped with a 7D, a 70-200 2.8 IS, a Canon 17-55 2.8, and a monopod. Needless to say it wasn't my best production but I did learn how not to shoot a wedding, like you said a re-shoot would be nice, but good lesson none the less.

Still my favorite wedding trailer. MYW is the best.

Prophetmatt- Were you the one suggesting the senheissers? I was planning on buying them but I heard another guy recommending on getting the recorder/wired lav set up because the recorder can record at a higher quality? Any thoughts? Still trying to figure this one out...

By the way it looks like you have a dead/stuck pixel right in the middle of your sensor. It moves slightly when you shake the camera though so I'm not sure if it's a pixel. If it is still there try this:

Place the body cap on the camera.
Go to M picture mode.
Go to menu and look for sensor cleaning.
Choose clean manually.
Hit ok and wait 30 seconds.
Then resume regular use.
It will get rid of the dead pixel.

Go wireless (sennheiser) attached to a handy recorder somewhere close (have the officiant wearing one with the receiver and recorder in the podium or behind something. this way there are no wires for them to get tripped up in, and they are free to move around without worry

Just went through this myself, did a ton of research and bought Samson AirLine LAv's (parent company of zoom)

Super small compared to the sennheiser and easy to hide on a bride. The sound hooked up to an H4N is pretty decent and you can get two for the price of the Sennheiser. I am also going to setup an NTG-3 in front of the alter to see what that grabs. Thats the route I went, we shall see if it works out after this weekend.

Well I have about $700 to spend. The price of the G3's is about 600 so that wouldn't leave me enough to get the dr100 mkii or the h4n. Thought I should add too, my audio set up isn't specifically going to be for weddings, it will include mainly set up interviews.

Sennheisers are worth getting. DVXuser is your friend, get a gently used pair from there and save enough for a nice recorder (dr100 mkII)

I bought two setups for $500 total through a friend though >:D

Also let us know what you think of the 5dMKIII. I bet the lowlight will kick ass for the night wedding. Good luck.

Just got back from the wedding shoot in Texas, pleasantly surprised by the capabilities of the 5D MIII, low light capabilities were amazing. Will post some screen shots and a the video soon.
