So Basis of my story is i'm living in santa barbara Isla Vista to be more specific and we were looking for places for the next school year got a place lined up and everything and the place is 4 bedrooms but we only had 3 people sign the lease and i paid the deposit for my friend who lives back in minnesota cause he was moving out there but i had to move back for summer to work and it ended up that they couldnt fill the rest of the rooms so they were going to fuck the place But i paid 1200 deposit for a place that cost 5400 a month to live at and i have no way of finding people because i'm back for the summer
So i was wondering if i have any grounds to get that money back?

should i call the landlord and ask for it back?

should i ask to rent one room?
would i need to sign a new lease for this?

What woud you do cause 1200 bucks is a lot of money to be out

hate to say it, but that's the point of the deposit.  the landlord has been missing out on tenants since you commited to renting the place.  read over your lease (specifically regarding the deposit) and post what it says.  it could be possible to find a loop hole.

wouldn't hurt to contact the landlord, they may give you a break if you are nice about it.  or offer you a partial refund.

I'm a landlord. If the tenant just writes me a well written letter about what their situation is I usually just give them their money back. However the most crucial thing I use to determine if they get their money back is their sentence structure and grammar.

I shred mammoth june big bear Mt high and the closest spot is Mt high which is like a little over 2 hours away but Isla vista is the shit and everyone should experience once in a life time its the smallest closest knit college town in the usa with surfing and skiing right at your finger tips
not to mention it has the best parties in the country and the hottest chicks as well
i've lived there for a year and i love it i go to the community college but its top 10 community colleges in the country and top cc in CA

Ok so I'm a landlord in michigan and your deposit is typically a security deposit which means it is used specifically for damages left by u when u leave not and cannot be withheld for unpaid rent. Please note all states have different landlord tenant laws. Some dtates only require 30 days notice to break a lease with many months left on it. Other states like mi are more landlord friendly requiring Tenents to pay all rents to satisfy the contract. I would talk to your landlord, often times if u explain your issues and you are respectful and don't avoid the issue they will work with you and you won't end up in court. First rule of signing leases in situations like yours is to make sure everyone had their own lease so if they quit paying you aren't stuck with the bill.

Wow top community college in CA? That's like being the top ranked illiterate kid in school. Why the fuck would move across the country to go to a CC? Oh you plan to transfer to UCSB and then go to med school? Let those dreams die like every other kid before you. I'm sure your parents are happy picking up that bill for $1,350 a month in rent. How are paying that much? I live a block from the beach San Diego in a nice 1 bedroom and am paying less than that. I guess I would rip dumb ass CC students off as well if I was a landlord.

Oh, and you're not getting your deposit back.

Try and explain your situation to the landlord ASAP who will be more likely to give you at least a partial refund if he has time to fill the place. Maybe ask your buddies for some of the deposit back or did ou all drop 1200? Good luck.

I'm not following. We are talking about two completely different forms of education. I have taken CC classes, I know what a joke they are compared to actual school.

I'm doing the same thing 2 year at community college get good grades transfer to 4 year school I'm paying for school myself and it's the cheapest way. I had a friend do the same thing he now goes to nyu

I have a friend that is in the tenure professor track at Harvard medical school that started off at CC. I also know 400 kids from high school that went to CC thinking they would transfer to some UC and now work at Fedex home office. There are outliers everywhere, this dude is not an outlier

Well number 1 we have the highest transfer rate out of all the community colleges in CA and sorry buddy i just didn't have the 50,000 to spend on out of state tuition like my housing i'm on my own thats why i'm back in minnesota for the summer working 75 hours a week earning my housing and school and i talked to the landlord today and he said he's mailing me a check tomorrow for the full amount because he found another group to rent the place

san diego is sick i used to live in ocean beach why such the harsh mood about everything

Well sounds like your talking about kids who couldn't get into a 4 year school. But I did get into a few 4 years and north country was just way cheaper for me.

I know where I go to school if you go to a CC and then transfer to the local University you get a full ride from the state scholarships. So it is way cheaper to go to college for free when you do a CC for 2 years then finish at a 4 year university. No hate on CC some of them are shit and classes are dumb as fuck. But I have also heard kids who try to take CC classes and find they are harder and should have stayed at their University rather than taking the "easy" trail.

That being said, I graduated in 4 years from a University and would not go to a CC.

Your school isn't even in the top 50. In fact Minnesota appears to have most of the top community colleges.

The transfer rate is kinda silly, they might all be transferring to CSU fullerton. So if we have a look at UCLA, only 23% were accepted. That's on the lower end of things...

Also, I went to Cal Poly from Minnesota and after year 1 (tuition was like $12,000 for the first year) tuition was in state and only $3000 a year. It's gone up, but not that much. UofM is around $11,000 a year. Community college for a year will get you in state tuition, but it is absolutely not $50,000. And if you are complaining about being on your own, you should be paying $500 a month in rent or $350 and sharing a bedroom.

There are just so many flaws in your logic.
