On Top of the World - critique

Nice vid tanner

Strong concept, the drawer full of photos at the end and the last photo were great
The vibe and song were great
Good mix of slowmo and regular speed shots
On some jumps half of the skier would go out of frame which was somewhat distracting

The shot at 2:45 would make more sense to be shot in a way to show there were stairs between the rail and box. That would make Roy's 180 look cooler.

I liked the jump cuts at 3:58

Thanks man. Yeah I definitely need to work on framing. I rushed some of those jump shots setting up and it shows for sure. I was also stoked on the cut at 3:58 too glad you appreciated it.

The biggest thing I would say is SHAKY poorly composed shots, especially the static shots
like you said, the riders weren't the best, that just means you have to focus even harder on the filming and editing
It was a kind of cool/fun idea, but you should have worked to bring it in through the whole edit a little bit more to keep the concept going and keep the viewers interested, because the skiing isn't riveting

i forgot to add, i liked the intro, i love intros like that, reminds me of the voleurz movies, (definitely check those out if you haven't) BUT the framing was off through most of it, heads bodies etc were getting cut off and that made the whole thing seem a little bit off to me

I thought it was pretty sick, Not boring like the guys above me said but I do agree about the framing.

my original concept had a continuous theme that I was gpoing to come back to over and over again but it just didn't pan out thanks for the critique man

I thought it was cool and I really liked the song choice but I also agree with what was said about shaky filming and framing.

Nonetheless...I'll reiterate.

Loved the idea. The intro was so fun to watch. I wish I coulda understood that while the subject was pooping he was having this daydream. I didn't get that till the end.

The secondary intro was fun too. Title (Par 5) was awesome. Didn't love the Heavenly/date titles, they blended in too much with the shot. IMO you shoulda ditched those and just let the edit flow together. I like that you didn't identify or segment the riders. Doing that would have taken away from the cohesion.

I think I lost the theme of the edit during the skiing. You had a great idea and executed it well, but its almost as though it was after the fact and you had already shot the skiing. I think more careful planning and thought could have reinforced the "on top of the world" idea. Heavenly is INCREDIBLY photogenic, as you know; not enough crews shoot there. You coulda come up with some really neat stuff I think. Don't take this as an all around negative; look at it as potential

Like Sklar said, a lot of the shots were poorly framed/shaky. I noticed it throughout the whole video - both intros, the skiing, and the ending. That may just be laziness. You gotta be sure that you're not slacking off when you're lapping. We're all victims of that, but its even more important when you've got these great ideas and you're not just making "another edit" you know?

Basically, the skiing lost me, and not just because it wasn't good. My friends aren't good either. I think you could have made it shorter and if it had been filmed with a little more thought (editing was fine) it would have stuck together. That's my interpretation, at least.

I still love the idea. I'm a little inspired now to go shoot, which is tough because I'm trying to sell my camera lulz. I'll have to bottle it up and save it for later. Overall well done, I bet you really enjoyed making it and you should use this and all the other feedback to help you improve for the next one. Upwards and onwards!

Dude I seriously always love your critiques. When I see you reply to one of my threads I get stoked. Thanks for the feedback I will focus more and the technical aspects of shooting my next video which will probably be mtbing. Blondie you are my favorite NS member just sayin really appreciate it.
