What Have You Hiked?

I hike in the Catskills, my home & backyard. Its gorgeous here. I've done 9 of the 35 high peaks, and dozens of trails in between. If anyone is ever headed here give me a heads up.

Still need to make it north to the Daks and into VT for more explorage.

I live in VT, but spend a lot of time in the ADK's. I just finished the last of the 46 this past summer (/claim). I can't say I liked all of them, but it was a fun experience overall. I think Marcy, Algonquin, Giant, Gothic, and Armstrong are the best. Lots of other fun ones too though.
I think it's kind of funny how I've done all 46 across the lake, but only 3/5 in the Greens. Still need Killington and Ellen. I think my favorite mountain is Camel's Hump just because I do it so much and it's really prominent from most of the area near my house. It's always watching over me.

Sick. Did you do it on your own or are part of one of the clubs? I really don't care to join 3500 club, I'm just hiking them for me (only started them 2 years ago) but anytime I talk to someone (who's a part) they try to shove it down my throat, kinda annoying.

I hiked it with my family. My parents wanted to finish before I left for college.
A lot of the clubs seem to be mostly older people.

That's sweet, I like it. I hear the Daks are super over crowded though, like can't even find a spot to park sometimes. Hiking shouldn't be like that. Its odd. Did you find that true at all?

It all depends where/when you are. On a nice weekend in summer, mountains that are easily accessible and are a shorter hike (like Porter and Cascade) are packed. Really popular mountains like Marcy also get really crowded even though it's a good was in. Lots of times parking lots at major trail heads fill up. However, even in peak season (pun) mountains that are harder to get to and are less rewarding hikes are still pretty empty. A good example would be Marshall.
In the fall (which is a better time to be hiking anyway, it's cooler and the leaves are changing) even the more popular hikes are a lot less crowded.

So if you want solitude there are plenty of nice hikes both to high peaks or smaller mountains. If you want a short hike with spectacular views in the middle of summer, there are going to be lots of other people there.

One of my all time favorites was Emerald Lake outside of Bozeman. Not super long (10 miles r/t) but really amazing the whole way up. Waterfalls all over the place. The actual lake is amazing. Super clear green (obvious from the name) water with Bald Eagles fishing all three times I've been up there. I would definitely recommend it to anybody living around Bozeman. Not my picture but this is Heather lake and Emerald. Heather is just another mile past Emerald.

I haven't been to the Upper Works yet since Irene. Should be interesting.

Last big hike I did was Mt.Mansfield (stowe). so amazing

zion was one of my favorite places when i was out west! but im from eastern pa and spend a lot of time on the AT. i have all of pennsylvania done (/claim)

I absolutely agree with this. Zion is beautiful. If you want a challening and beautiful adventure I would recommend the Zion Grand Traverse. It is around 48 miles from one end of Zion to the other. A brief overview may be found here: http://adventurerun.wordpress.com/2008/05/26/zion-traverse/ Doing it in a day is a lot of fun, but it would make for a nice 5-7 day backpacking trip as well. Don't forget the Grand Canyon either, as Rim to Rim to Rim is a fantastic adventure which I enjoyed even more than Zion.

I'm in Eastern PA for the summer, and was on the AT yesterday. I have all of the trail done. /claim?

Oh yeah and the enclosure- Second highest peak in the tetons. My group was originally planning on going to the summit of the grand, but icy conditions made it pretty sketchy, so we opted for the enclosure. It was beautiful, but it was kind of a bummer not being able to go to the top. Glacading down the lower saddle however made up for it. I was laughing like a little kid all the way down. Probably my second favorite hike over all.

Just finished a really quick thru-hike of the Long Trail in Vermont the other day. That trail is RUGGED! It has some really challenging parts, which made me really work to complete it in the timeframe I had. It had been a while since I'd done any serious backpacking and it was good to throw myself into it again for a bit. If anyone is considering doing the trail or is interested, PM me and I'll send you my journal.

that's sick. hiking the long trail is definitely on my bucket list, I heard the views are incredible compared to the New England section of the Appalachian trail.

I've done a fair amount of peakbagging in Montana and plan on doing it much more and really getting into it. The bushwhacking and off trail hiking while peakbagging is something I really enjoy. Nature is far more enjoyable if you step off the trail and explore the forest.

Duffey Lake area

Blowdown/Gott Peak: I've done this hike 3 times, always starting by heading to Blowdown cabin first for a night or two and then cutting over to Gott Peak/the top of the logging road where the 4x4's go. That side gets a decent amount of weekend warriors, but the Blowdown cabin is pretty off the grid. Goes without saying, but it's so beautiful.

Cerise creek: I've done this one twice. The first time was in late June and there were a bunch of skiers coming down the trail right as we were heading in (they'd been at Keith's hut). That foreshadowed the trip pretty well and we ended up walking on snow for 90% of the hike. Peaked Vantage which was prime, great views of Mt. Matier and Snowspider. Second time a couple buddies and I went around Vantage and down to the base of Mt. Duke. We tried to peak Duke but got closed out, then the next day had the gnarliest bush-whack of our lives trying to get out via Caspar creek - the logging road we thought we could hit was fuly overgrown with like 12ft alders. Madness.

Mariott basin/Mt. Rohr: Did this one in late June again so got hung up by a ton of snow. Still so beautiful though, you can't beat the Coast mountains for views. And the Wendy Thompson hut is sick, I love ACC huts.

I've also done a couple hikes up near Wells-Grey, which was gorgeous as well.

Last summer I did a hike in the Great Gulf Wilderness in the White Mountains of NH and it was by far my favorite hike I've done. The first day we did a mild hike into the valley. We camped in the valley and hiked Six Husbands up to Mt. Jefferson, which was a great trail, challenging and steep. Then we hiked across the ridge to Mt. Adams, where the views were absolutely incredible. We then went to Star Lake and Madison Hut, and the descended back to camp via the Buttress Trail. The following day we hiked back to Madison Hut and were planning on summiting Mt. Madison, but due to the weather we hiked down the backside of the ridge, where we finished.

definatly my favorite mountains/area of the adks. Such easy hikes but they have, in my opinion, the most incredible views out of the 46.

I've done a shit ton around there since I was a kid. Basically every weekend in the summer my dad would take Friday off and we would go for the weekend. Mainly Whistler/Pemberton area but a bit of stuff eastward as well. I'll put asteri next to my favourite camp spots and day trip to go with a bunch of them. For the area the Scrambles guide is by far the best I've found, but definitely misses some cool areas.
This summer will be my first working through the Rockies/Kananaskis area so I'm pretty excited. That said I'm obviously a coast kid and the lack of oxygen makes me instantly seem more out of shape (idk what I would do if I ended up at real altitude).

Whistler/Pemberton/Lilooet area:
Elfin Lakes - Little Diamond Head, *Opal Cone, random scrambling
Garibaldi Lake - Cinder cone (the lava flats are super cool), Mt. Price, Black Tusk*, Panorama Ridge, far too many days reading on a rock out on the Peninsula
*Gentian Pass - the Cheakamus Lake-Helm-Panorama ridge route, climbed *Castle Towers
*Russet Lake (this has been my favourite weekend trip since I first went in at 9) - Fissile, Whirlwind, *Overlord, and swam in the Adit lakes down below
Wedgemount Lake - Parkhurst, *Weart, Rethel
Tenquille Lake - Finch Ridge, Tenquille mountain, Goat Peak, Copper Mound, Mt. McLeod
*Barbour's Draw - climbed Barbour
Semaphore Lakes - Locomotive Mountain
Saxifrage Peak - I know we camped somewhere on the way, think it was a pretty nice lake
*Phelix Creek (super boss cabin) - Mt Gandalf, Mt Aragorn, need to do make sure you don't go there in grizzly bear mating season
Twin Lakes - I think I got both the NW and SW peak,
Joffree Lake - climbed Tszil and Slalok (didn't make it to the top of Slalok as conditions went south)
Mount Rohr
Stein Divide - when the trail goes up over the Devil's staircase leave the trail and cut under the cliff instead of heading up. It is absolutely covered in Native paintings, some of them so high that the artist must have scaled the wall. We also found a bunch under a huge rock in a scree field that were in great condition having been more shielded from the elements)
Cayoosh Mt
Seton Ridge (you get some amazing views but a little ways along there is a ton of deadfall so we turned back, would still be perfect for a day trip though)
Cheakamus Canyon
**Ashlu - near Squamish, don't hear about it much but this one is INCREDIBLE
Cerise Creek - only climbed Vantage I believe
Gott - climbed Gott and either Gottcha or No Gott
Downton Creek - Peak 8700

I still really want to make it up Sun God, Seven O'clock, the rest of the LotR group and some other stuff. I'll save Wedge, Joffree and Garibaldi until I've taken some courses so I'm properly prepared for glacier travel.
