It is ultimately impossible to establish a completely stationary point in the universe. With everything in motion and expanding there is no point of reference.

The earth revolves around the sun. Our solar system revolves around the outer parts of the milky way galaxy, and our galaxy is moving towards the Andromeda galaxy with the majority of other galaxies moving away from us in the observable universe.

And for my contribution...

There is anatomically nothing different about between what happens inside the brain during a hallucination as opposed to real input. So, if you put a person in an fMRI machine, there would be no way to tell the difference between hallucinations and what's real.

The only way to know is if you ask someone else.

What is the universe?

Also, what if our entire universe is contained within a single atom of a single being that is in another universe. Thus creating an infinite amount of universes.

Also, with the above logic, what if universe A is inside universe B, universe B is inside universe C, and universe C is inside universe D, yet somehow universe D is also inside universe A?

Finite loop of infinite universes.

I've thought about this. Crazy.

I was also listening to some guy on NPR talk about the universe and he posed this:
If time is infinite, and the amount of matter and energy in the universe in finite then that means somewhere is the endless span of time this same EXACT situation will occur an infinite number of times. Mindblowing

Kind of. It's not that the galaxies are moving faster than the speed of light within the universe, it's that the universe is expanding faster than the speed of light and taking the galaxies with it. It's like if you run down the aisle of a bullet train, your speed relative to the earth might be 300mph, but you're probably only running at like 7mph.

well bill nye explained that one, how it's space that is expanding.

here is that crazy thing though. once that galaxy is moving away from you faster than light, it doesn't really exist to us if you think about it.

I mean in billions of years if our intellectual heirs are still around (big if haha) they will only be able to see their own galaxy. This would mean that for them if someone suggested that there were other galaxies, they would think you are crazy. It would be no more valid than a religious belief.

Alright, so this is going to take some paying attention. Imagine a big empty space with nothing in it. It expands in every direction infinitely. Now put 1 red ball in the space. If that is the only thing in this space, you cannot tell weather it is moving or not. But, if you put a stationary object, let's say a blue square, in the space. You can most certainly tell which way the ball is moving. But that's only in relativity to the square. To the whole space itself, it is not moving because the space doesn't have a stationary point since it's constantly expanding. So the blue square just gives it the illusion of moving, but in the big picture it's not. Now apply this to our universe. All the planets and galaxies and our houses and computers are blue squares. We are red circles and the universe is the empty space. So are we really moving? Alan Watts had a better way of putting it but I think that's the general idea. I may have gotten some parts wrong though. Shit still makes you think though.

- how much energy it must have taken during the big bang to set all this mass into movement and keep it moving since this point of time
- how the hell did people invent all the crazy stuff we have nowadays (I know its a process and took very small steps, but still someone must have had a general idea at some point)
- how come we all know (at least most) what all these words mean. And why the hell do we call a "house" a house?

according to science, if you travel at the speed of light, you don't age. thus meaning you will never die. I thought that was pretty insane when I first heard it. So, if you went up in a rocket and somehow travelled at the speed of light around the earth for 1000 years, then came back to earth, you would be able to live in the year 3012...

Also, can anyone explain this to me?

I saw in a documentary that the speed of light is only relative. So if you were traveling a the speed of light, then shined a flashlight in the direction you were moving, the light would travel at the speed of light away from you. But doesn't this mean that relative to a "stationary object," the light from the flashlight would be traveling at 2x the speed of light? This is hard to think about.

Kinda makes sense, like if you're on a train thats going 60mph and you run towards the front cabin at 5mph, you are technically moving at 65mph.

The reason that light always has the same velocity is because light is a wave. Wave velocity doesn't depend on the speed of the thing emitting it. The velocity of the wave is determined by the material that the wave travels through.

A real world normal example. When a boat travels through the water a wake is created behind it. The wake is a wave so it travels outwards at a constant velocity dependent of the medium (water) which it travels through. It doesn't depend of the velocity of the boat. If you have a boat going 55mph and a boat going 5 mph the wave speed of the wake will be the same.

Sorry for dub post. It always crosses my mind, what happens of your 2 predecessors never met, let alone conceived you( as a child)? Would my "soul" never exist? Would I exist in a different body or person but not realize that I couldve been my pen pal? Would I have been aborted by two different parents? What if I was born into a family fond of incest, but normally I would frown upon that, yet it is normal to me because my family/faith allows and encourages the practice? Shits crazy...

a person on the spaceship would see light shine from the flashlight at the speed of light. A person outside the spaceship would see no beam of light moving from the flashlight (in the direction of the movement of the ship).

and if you were aborted in one family did you live as the same "soul" into another family? and what if when we die, and say no matter what you believe, we come alive as a new person? but we wouldn't know if we were a person from the past because our soul is in a new life form learning different new things?
