If you were in a spherical capsul an it was made of mirrors and you turned on a flashlight, shined it, and turned it off, would it keep reflecting or go out. I think it would go out but can't explain why

really though, i always wonder about our atmosphere and what it's actually doing to us. if we were to be conceived in space or on the moon and just lived there with limited exposure to the suns radiation, no (or limited) gravity, no bacteria and bugs and exposure to all of the things of our world on a regular basis, how different would we be? it's interesting shit to think about when you're in that existential mood.

It woukd go dark, mirrors are not 100% efficient at reflecting light, and even if they were, you would need to flashlight to provide the photons for you to see

Exactly. My friend said that it would just be black with nothing in it, but black is a color and space is something. Its way too hard to explain.

Nothing can't exist because there is always something. Just blackness IS something. A empty space isn't nothing, it's an empty space. So to conclude nothing can be nothing because nothing actually doesn't exist.

the thought of what lies on the outer edge of space terrifies me. it is just so unexplainable that i actually am somewhat scared of it.

Has anyone ever tried to learn about black holes? i was reading about them one day, and there is this theory called "spaghettification" and all this crazy stuff.

How do we actually know that there are other galaxies? Sure yeah we can see them. But how do we know it couldn't be a reflection of our galaxy or something, mabye we just want to believe there is more. There might be. But there might not, it's mind boggling. I would never go into space personally but if I had the chance to go in space with a promised enough food and fuel I would just go forever. Just to see if it is actually never ending. Also how do we know our galaxy doesn't rotate around a super giant star or something. Just like we rotate around the sun.

Because we can see that it's not.. Why would reflections of our solar system be different than our own? There's a number of different kinds of galaxies. Get learned physics is really interesting.

spaghettifcation is gnarly, learned about it once....

the force of gravity in a black hole is so strong that it's like strong enough to "spagghetify" even light photons. shaping light just by gravity. humans would be turned into noodles!!

basically, the craziest thought that i can think of and boggles my mind everytime i think about it is the term "lightyear" and how everything we look at in our galaxy, other than our sun and moon, are light years away and how it happened billions of years ago and it's just getting to us now. fucks my shit up..total mind fuck.

like, what if those stars aren't even there anymore and we are just seeing a dead star's light from billions of years ago?

stuff you see in our galaxy is not billions of light years away. Basically everything in the sky is less than 4000 light years away. If we are really lucky we can see supernovas that are quite a bit further away with the naked eye, but those are rare and still in the range of thousands, not billions of years ago. Most of the stars we see are also main sequence stars, mid way through their lifetimes. So they are almost all definitly still there,

Of course there are some exceptions, for people in the northern hemisphere, the furthest into the past you are going to see is andromeda. which is something like 2.5 million light years away. So yes those photons have gone a long way through time you reach your eyes in that case.

what blows my mind is we can see, with the naked eye, less than 5% of our own galaxy. Which is at least less than one out of a hundred billionth of the galaxies in the universe.

It's fucking crazy. I love astronomy.

fucking crazy. I am learning the basics over the summer. Modern physics is just so insane. I can't wait until I get to take a class on particle physics (if I ever can finish the math classes!)

just notice that i didn't say billions of light years, i said billions of years. all in all, i have no idea how far or how long a light year is, but i just said billions because i'm vague. i think that a light year is something that takes something travelling the speed of light, to get from point a to point b. basically i can't think of how to explain it but i think i can get it. i just have allergies and am not thinking right.

i love astronomy also. shit blew my mind back in tenth grade. i wish i could have taken it more in depth.

i honestly like to believe that there is no purpose of life. we are here purely by luck. the universe thing gets me everytime though.

why is there a universe

why are there elements

why is there energy that created the universe, and as this energy decipates, the universe expands and the energy will eventually run out and there will be no more universe

i just get fucked on that one.

i kinda think that it's all luck man, like there is no way we are the only living things in the UNIVERSE, cause it's fucking huge. I wish we could connect to other NSers in other universes, that would be tits ass bomb ass dank ass.

but light years and the "age" of the light reaching your eyes are the same thing...

so if you are only seeing a star 50 light years away, you are seeing that star as it was 50 years ago.
