Hey NS, was wondering if anyone on here is a Firefighter/EMS/Volunteers? Was looking to join my local Volunteer Fire Department after my ankle heals up in hopes of eventually becoming a Paramedic in the future and turning it into a career. Im 21 years old. Anyone have any information of the steps/procedures to become a Firefighter? I was told volunteers are trained to become a Firefighter then I would have to go to school to become a Paramedic. Was also told that the Volunteer FD would pay for all my training, and everything would take about 2+ years. I know that I can just google this stuff/go to the local FD for info, but I would like to hear some personal experiences on the matter if anyone has them. Thanks!

I would be Volunteering so there would be no pay, but having fun sounds good to me!

this. i dont know exactly how it works, but all my fiend in the FD are volunteers but they get a bonus at the end of the month of anywhere from 300-1000 dollars. i think it has to do with over budgeting on the taxes or something, but im not sure.

Worked as an EMT for 4+ years in Los Angeles County (we covered compton and east LA haha) and then in Orange County.
It's an interesting job and you get to meet a lot of unique people.
I don't know how it is where you live, but at least in Southern California paid career firefighters handle most fire suppression and EMS response. They generally make pretty good money, ~50k to start and can earn $100k+ near retirement.
Just understand that 80-90% is going to be medical, not fighting fires.
