The school just asked him to wash his face, his parents are the ones that pulled him out. I sided with the family until I heard that. I don't think the school was out of line in that regard, had he simply washed his face then this wouldn't be a news story at all. Yes, he is a young kid and probably didn't realize why blackface can be offensive. The parents, on the other hand, should have known better and thought twice before sending him to school like that. What this looks like at the moment though is white people arguing with white people about what's offensive, and both sides getting way too butthurt about it.

Lol lost at the first part. I would have pulled my kid out of school to the school is being racist by saying a white kid isn't aloud to represent a black person. Meh people need thicker skins.

What is offensive about this, again. This was done in poor taste. He was portraying a historical figure which the majority of America sees as someone who made a difference. I don't see anything wrong with the kid trying to look more like MLK. I would see it more as a compliment to the black community to commemorate what they have over come regarding the Civil Rights movement.

You're right, the kid was not doing it in poor taste and meant no offense by it, however that doesn't change the history associated with blackface and what it means to lots of people. I honestly believe this is a perfect example of some kid making a cute mistake and then adults blowing it way out of proportion. Knowing who the person that made the complaint is has a legitimate effect on the situation, and I kind of wish that information was given.

You're right. More info is needed and news team kinda' botched this story. I just don't see how anyone can find this offensive, but it's pretty much open for anyone's interpretation. The only thing that kind of edged me was that the boy was told to dress up as the person he was doing a project on, then was told to take a part of the costume off because he looked too much like the person he was portraying. It just doesn't make sense to me.

Fuck oversensitive people. He painted his face because he wanted to look like MLK. He was doing the same thing as any kid that tries to dress like Superman. People's obsession with symbolism not even relevant in today's world is completely ridiculous. Don't get caught up on the symbol. Pay attention to the intention instead.

This is bad, but what I hate is the kindergarteners who get suspended or expelled for sexual harrasment! what the flying fuck. if I asked a kindergartner what sex was, he would have no idea. There is absolutely no way that they no what harassment is, or how to stop themselves from "doing" it. in fact, the other day, there was a kid who was suspended or expelled because he sang the chorus to "I'm sexy and I know it" in front of a girl. complete and utter bullshit.

this kid had absolutely nothing to do with that blackface, (not offensive in the first place) bullshit anyway. he painted his fucking face black to represent a black person, because white people have white skin, in order to look more like a black person, common sense would tell you that painting your face black would help to better represent that person. crazy huh?

the kid made no fucking mistake, he made the opposite of a mistake, he made a good choice, he did a better job representing the person, and had a better school project because of it. some fuck nut just decided to find a reason to get offended.

what i dont get is how the people who somehow find this shit racist in the first place arent labeled as racist themselves. if you really want to get into it, thinking that black people need some kind of special treatment because they are a minority, and should be exempt from any kind of mockery, representation, judgement, etc.. that is perfectly acceptable to other races, is more racist than the guy who has the balls to treat them just like he would anybody else. meaning not being scared to judge, make fun of, dress up like, etc..

and if it was a black person getting offended, well he needs to grow some balls and shut the fuck up. i dont care how you look at that, if you find a way to let something like that get to you that is 110% your fault, man up and take it, dont bitch about it and expect others to do something about a problem you have/created.

reminds me of so many stupid things i got suspended for the school systems are shit i don't understand why their so butthurt, clearly none of the kids cared and there's always that one white butthurt teacher who thinks every things racist. i been suspended for complete bullshit reasons and when i get caught doing something actually bad nothing has happened
i got suspended in 4th grade for saying i was going to shoot my sister with a nerf gun
i got suspended in 5th grade for making indian noises
6th for taking of a kids shoe when we were playing some capture the flag game
7ht grade for liking a Facebook page
again in 7th grade for making a face book page saying the principal was stalking face book
thankfully no more since those or i probably wouldn't be able to go to collage
yet i haven't gotten suspended for lighting fire works in the hall, breaking a locker door, hiding in the classroom during a fire drill and piling all the desks/chairs/books/all that stuff in a pile in the middle of the room.

Al Jolson? you fucking kidding? that guy helped black actors and opened a lot of doors for them back then, introduced jazz/black music to white theatres, known for being anti-racism, and promoted equality in film and plays.

the whole blackface thing back then wasnt racist. it introduced whites to black styles of music and entertainment when blacks had shit for rights. for the most part it was just plain entertainment. white guys painting themselves black and acting like black people. how the fuck is that racist? even if they made fun of blacks, pointed out negatives of black society, or used stereotypes. its fucking entertainment. its just like dave chappelle painting his face white and playing on white stereotypes. nobody gets offended, its just funny.

even if for some reason the blackface era was considered racist, some kid painting his face black for a school project has absolutely no relation to a 80 year old era in entertainment. did Robert Downey offend you in tropic thunder for painting his face black because you found a way to associate that with an almost century old not even racist era in entertainment?

its like people getting offended for saying the N word, which i cant even say on here because our retardedly politically correct society says i hate blacks when i say it. if i say "whaddup ni--a" in a funny way to my friend of any race, its completely different than saying "die ni---rs!" as i burn a cross in some black guys yard. even associating the two as similar is stupid. if you find me jokingly saying n----r offensive, then suck a dick. i cannot stand people that get offended easily, especially people that get offended easily, but seek out reasons to get offended that make no fucking sense.

She said that was fucking retarded so I ended up being a blond Robin.. Not a day goes by that I don't thank my parents for their executive decision that day. I could've ended up like this kid.

I actually don't know much about Al Jolson, but from what you seem to know It seems like he did more good than harm.


But there is another issues... I just want you to know, if you are a white person calling your white friends "niggas", you come off as very socially sheltered and unaware. I went to an inner city high school (central tech, toronto) of about 3200 people for one year, where the demographic was less than 10% white, and nigga was a social term between most people the same way it is usually portrayed to people like you in the media. But I can tell you indefinitely, if you were white and used it even in a casual/joking way with a black guy, you were in trouble (I saw people learn that the hard way). White people aren't niggas. Its a very clear and distinctive term. Just like black guys would never call their black friends crackas.

I don't really care if you want to joke around and do that shit with your friends because it doesn't bother me, but know that when you step out of your little gingerbread suburb, it will be received differently in the communities of where the term actually originated.
