Solar Eclipse May 20th 2012!

So there is going to be an annular solar eclipse this sunday the 20th, is anyone in the west going to try and take pictures of it or capture it in any way? im thinking about setting up shop cuz apparently the path hits right over Reno :)

anyone ever tried to take pics of the sun like that at all? cuz i don't really wanna fry my sensor, maybe ill just set up the gopros instead?

i was thinkin somethin like that too. i think it could be pretty sweet, i just don't want to fry my camera. ill probably do a gopro time lapse for sure tho

yeah.. I dont have a go pro though :( Does anyone have any idea if this is accually bad for your camera?  What if I use silent picture in Magic Lantern?

I read up a little bit on this because I am interested in possibly snapping some pics, but I am no expert and I highly encourage you to do your own research as well.

1. Get a pair of glasses that will protect your eyes from the increased strength of the sun during an annular eclipse, sunglasses will not cut it. Also the pin hole things work, but seem pretty difficult to use, especially if you plan on taking pictures.

2. Buy or rig up some type of solar filter, it will save your camera's sensor and allow you to take much better pics.

That's really all I've got, I didn't really find a definitive answer if it will fry the sensor in a DSLR, but I assume it can't be awesome fore it. I'm interested to hear from someone who has photographed one before!

yeah me too, i did see that with longer lenses, they act as a pretty intense magnifying glass so if its pointed directly at the sun it can heat things up pretty fast which is definitely not good. but i would also like to hear from someone who has done it

im going to zion to shoot pictures. i feel like the red light during the eclipse is gona light the cliffs up, and its at sunset so its a once in a lifetime opportunity to shoot that. i unfortunately dont have the money to rent a super tele and buy a solar filter. my roommate will be bringing his red and renting that shit, so hopefully we'll have some cool shots to throw up here

im gonna rubber band a pop tart wrapper to the end of my lens.. Its made out of mylar so it will act sort of like a solar filter

I was able to shoot it fine on a 7d with 70-200mm lens with 1.4x convertor and .9 ND filter. 1/8000 f/45 and used the depth of field preview button to aim at the sun. I only took single exposures so the sensor was never exposed for more than 1/8000 and ae meter was only exposed for split second between the exposure and dof preview reingaging.

some awesome pics in here!

i shot at it with my aperture around f32 and shutter of 1/8000 as well on my 60d. i only had a 135 lens on there so this is as close as i could get :/

then i took one through the many sunglasses we used to view it off of a reflection, worked pretty well, picture didn't quite turn out as sharp but kinda neat

well my ND filter isn't very dark and the sun is still extremely bright so i had to use a super fast shutter and small aperture to keep from over-exposing. if you had a good filter you probably could have done it with any camera i think

so heres my attempt at a timelpase of the eclipse. It didn't turn out nearly as well as I thought it would but, oh well. I have 0 experience or equipment when it comes to taking pics of the sun. What I ended up doing was shooing at 1/2500 f/20 and 160 iso then I aimed the camera through both of my car windows. (I have pretty tinted windows.)

Anyways, heres what i got:

i like the first one and the color a lot. the second one is cool too cuz it looks like there is some slight clouds in front of it which looks pretty sweet

So this is pretty funky but I can dig it. It's not exactly "usable" in anything due to shake/framing etc, but its a cool image and is definitely interesting to watch.

thanks.. I never really realized how fast the sun moved until I made this.. the sun kept moving out of my frame like every 15-20 mins. haha


And that picture is by far the coolest eclipse pic I have seen yet ^^

Yeah haha We had like 5 cameras going, and I just set this one up to record the lens flaring and the shadows of the valley/clouds/our movement/etc.

The other two timelapses were just capturing the sun through different solar filters while on astrology tripods (Nothing you couldn't see done elsewhere). I captured this using a Nikon 5100.
