What is this called?

What is the white thing on top of the camera that the guy on the right has? I had one for awhile and broke it recently shooting a concert and for the life of me cant remember what it is called. I think it was invented by some asian guy but i am not sure.

Fong dong. You should learn how to bounce flash if you don't already, it's generally an equal or better solution without spending money on a piece of plastic.

The Fong diffuser like in this photo can make a nice looking illumination if you're shooting people up close at night, for event photos and such, but it's kinda dumb because it dumps a ton of light out the top and back of it.

There's nothing it does better than other diffusers.

I used to shoot concerts in dark venues and im probably going to get back into soon so its a nice thing to have.

Yea, so don't get a diffuser that dumps light in 360 degrees on one axis and like 270+ on the other two. Get one that directs light in the direction of your shot, so that you aren't wasting battery in your speedlight / sending flash to blind people that are standing behind you. It gets annoying for them, people will get pissed especially in a concert setting. Not something you want with an expensive camera around your neck

The only advantage is it's much bigger than most diffusers, but like Twoods says, it spills a lot of light. Just DYI one yourself. Make it big and spilless.

Damn that's pretty artsy.

But how would you make one yourself? It seems simple enough, could cardboard or thick plastic be used to stop light from spilling out? How does it really work though? Though goes out flash, part of light bounces around inside cone and deflects up and backwards?
