So I'm headed off to college this fall, and am getting all the standard stuff (bedding, computer, etc.) and was wondering what random crap might be cool or handy to have

You acquire a lot of stupid shit in your first couple weeks. Colleges and groups that come to advertise in the early weeks love to give away free stuff. Take advantage of it.

As for stuff...I mean, it kind of depends where you're going? It'll make sense to bring some stuff and it'll be pointless to bring other stuff.

Initiative. College is full of opportunities if you are willing to seek them out. Also, don't hesitate to go chat with your professors during their office hours, and make yourself a familiar face.

Lol, I know a kid who bought a rubber fist just to put his weed behind.  Or so he said.  Did save his ass (lol) at least once though.  PS went to search his room, opened the drawer, saw a fucking rubber fist and closed it again, disgusted hahahahaha

Backpack, clothes, condoms, fake id, Frisbee, nerf gun, motivation to go to class, motivation to go out, and most of all the idea that college is class first then partying, make sure you keep them in balance.

The best thing i brought was one of those things you put in your bed so you can sit up and do hw or read.

I brought a massive stereo and that was sweet.

Reverendwrong's unofficial list of things that will make you the coolest kid on campus

-Car: people need rides and you can charge their asses for gas. Also, offer to provide a car to get to parties on the condition that you aren't DD (unless you want to), always a good strategy.

-Longboards: note the plural. Have an extra one to share with your friends who don't have one. Also teaching chicks how to longboard is a great first date idea.

-Water pot: it's 20 bucks and boils water, you would be amazed how often you use it.

-N64: people may argue over halo/cod/madden/etc, but NO ONE ever says no to smash bro's, mario kart, or goldeneye.

-Safe: Police/school will need to get a warrant to search it, nuff said.

-X-mas lights: looks cool, makes good mood lighting.

-Computer to TV cable: no need for a stereo or computer speakers, also lets you watch all those movies you pirated on a bigger screen.

-Febreeze: Self explanatory.


Other things:

Always carry a lighter on you even if you don't smoke. It's a great way to meet people at parties.

Don't wear your lanyard around your neck or have it hanging from your pockets, it just screams freshman to everyone, including police.

^^^ N64, Longboard and Car are so key. It's pretty much all I brought.

Also party as much as you can and meet as many people as you can. I wish I could have lived in res first year. Later on you wont get to party nearly as much (but when you do, the partying only gets better). First year is easy. Just don't skip calculus and you will ace it.

Speakers are an absolute must. A different notebook for each class. For years I tried to keep all my notes in one of those 5 subject things, but eventually it just got loaded with handed back papers in the folder portion, etc. Opening a drawer in your desk, and grabbing a class specific notebook is incredibly more organized than the massive 5 subject. Just a tip, worked for me.

Im not in college but I do actually have a good idea. A pizza oven. A friend of mine said it was his favorite thing he brought, with a microwave close in second. He just stacked them up and he said he can eat that way for years. Also, bring longboards and set aside like 100 bucks for any replacement bearings, wheels if you slide, etc. that sort of thing.
