Soo America hates North Carolina?

I live in NC and we just passed an amendment that doesn't allow gay marriage. now "dear north carolina" is trending on twitter and most tweets say we are the most hated state in America now. thoughts?

it's not exactly "who's being hurt", because no one is hurt over it. here's what you guys don't understand (and its probably because you're from a different part of the country as i've said before):

NC is old-fashioned. with-the-times just enough to keep up with the rest of the country, but when comes to laws, religion, moral standpoints, we are old school. i don't mind this, as i'm a pretty chill person and don't mind the laws as they are. but there are loads of down home, country-roots based people out there who still have this old-fashioned outlook. and they do not want this to change.

i realize and understand all the hate. but if you are from a different state and do not like our opinion, stay in your state where the laws please you. i'm not trying to be cross about it, i'm just stating that the laws here vary from the laws anywhere else, and there's a reason behind it.

Here's a legal analysis. Basically, the problem with the argument being made by the Amendment supporters is that it is based off of either one or a combination of two things:

1. A Logical Fallacy. If "marriage" is to be defined as a union with the purpose of reproduction, then what about infertile spouses? Alternatively, what about relationships between two individuals who do not intend to have children?

2. A Religious Argument. If "marriage" is to be defined as a union between a man and a woman based on the espoused ideas of the Bible, then the Amendment would be deemed to be unconstitutional.

The problem isn't the idea. It's that it wouldn't stand at the SCOTUS.

Washington State currently has an "everything but marriage" law. Essentially, it includes all of the legal benefits of marriage without the title. That might be an intermediate step that individual states will take as the debate rages on. At its core, this isn't so much a moral issue as a constitutionality/civil rights issue.

That said, NC is also perfectly free to ban same-sex marriage. I don't really understand the purpose of a ban--and what it would achieve for the state--, and it's likely to be struck down at the SCOTUS, but regardless, they are free to implement such a ban. That's what's great--and sometimes terrible--about democratic, representative republics.

The moral issues brought up by the opposition do make sense. Their concerns may be valid in their eyes. Hell, I agree with many of their concerns. But morality's not for someone to adjudicate--moral decisions are to be made individually, not societally. By legalizing same-sex marriage, the religious might be offended, but it passes the First Amendment test: it doesn't restrict the free practice of the religious and it doesn't "establish" a religion.

The law, on the other hand, does.

Ya keeping to your old ways is all well and good, except when it gets in the way of fundamental rights.

It doesnt matter that the majority in NC are accustomed to and would like to continue persecuting people for being homosexual. Its still wrong, and its unconstitutional.

And what you call "old-fashioned" ways, is exactly what prejudice is.

I don't really respect your opinion on the matter because in my opinion it's bigoted. Separation of church and state should come into play here, and unfortunately it doesn't.

Old fashioned... you mean like where the mother cooks dinner every day and has it on the table for 5:30 sharp?

Those days are long gone, long long gone. If North Carolina isn't up to date with the times than they need to get up to date with the times.

Bottom line... The issue of gay marriage IS going to end up in the Supreme Court of the United States in the next five years, if not sooner. The Supreme Court will find banning gay marriage to be unconstitutional, and all of the fighting over it will undoubtedly just be a huge waste of time and money. My recommendation would just be to get with the times and avoid the inevitable.

I don't give a fuck what you call it, the bottom line is that same sex couples should have the same partnership rights that heterosexual couples do.
This is why we should move to an all civil unions system where marriage, evidently a religious institution, isn't automatically recognized by the various levels of government. Really, if you're opposed to this, you're just a homophobic douche.

This whole gay marriage argument is pointless. Let people do what they want to do as long as no one else is being harmed. We all just want to be happy.. let's not get in anyone else's way on their path to happiness. It's so simple, I can't understand what all the fuss is about. I don't care if your from the south, the north, or Jupiter.. just let people do what they want to do. The Universe is too large and we are too meaningless to be arguing about silly things like this. Spend that energy trying to solve real problems.

Your stay in your own state bullshit is asinine. You can break it down from the top, stay in your own country, stay in your own state, stay in your own county, stay in your own municipality....the problem is THERE ARE TOO MANY PEOPLE TO AGREE ON HOW IT SHOULD BE even if there was a population of 2 you will still find conflicting opinions. As if someone's opinion means a damn thing in the first place.

An individual should be free to live his life as he wishes, not how you and your retarded family wish, or how their neighbors wish or how your god wishes. Then the restrictions on freedom come when there are true victims with real and tangible damages, not when your uneducated opinion shits up your skull cavity.

I dont understand why gays want to get married anyways, its controlled by the church and if the church does not agree with them or their lifestyle, why would they want to get joined by it in the first place? I agree that a civil union is the way to go, give them all the benefits of marriage, without calling it marriage, and everyone SHOULD be happy.

So many minors who can't even fucking vote feel the need to bicker about it, and they will not fucking stop. It's super annoying, and I was against the amendment because I'm OK with same-sex marriage. They won't stop talking shit about the people who have opposing views. It's annoying as hell and my facebook as ridiculous. I deactivated it this morning because people wouldn't shut the fuck up about it. I'm at school right now and people aren't talking about it that much, but I'm glad that the state is getting negative vibes from the other 49. Very glad. Way too many fucking conservatives and christians in this state. They ruin it for us normal people.

And now everyone's like 'OMG GUYZ NC SUCKS YOLO', I'm like bitch, what the fuck is wrong with you? You're just now figuring out that NC is a shitty ass hellhole of a state?

But then again I wasn't upset, nor surprised. I knew exactly what would happen. I can't vote either way so fuck it.

youre not understanding my point, my point is that gays disagree with the points of the church, why would they want to be joined in a religious matrimony in the first place. They aren't any less than human, of course not, they aren't any better or worse than heterosexuals, however it just doesn't make sense to me why they would want to be joined by an institution that does not agree with their lifestyle and why when most gays talk shit on the church they turn around and say they want nothing else but to get joined by that very same church!

Shit they can have the biggest ceremony ever with all of their families celebrating their joining for life exactly like purpose of a marriage, it just wont be accepted by the state as an official marriage. If you want to make the benefits argument, that is why I think they should be able to get a civil unionship that would give them the same benefits as marriage.

It's roots are in the ownership of women and the development of the idea of property. Let me go ahead and post an excerpt on marriage from A Theory of a Leisure Class by Thorstien Veblen, which explains how marriage derives from the ownership of women.

Religion =/= Marrige.

Gays are seeking the legal right to marrige from the government.
There is a separation of Church and State, outlined in the deceleration of independence as well as the Constitution,  something often forgotten by people against the marriage of gays.

Marriage used to be a religious event, but the key word is USED to be, things have changed, Obviously not everyone getting married is religious, and even the people who are religious, and against gay marriage, need to look at their own lives. They are denying rights to be people based on an idea in the bible, when they themselves don't fallow the same ideas. If your going to bash gay marriage on the idea that it says so in the bible, you god fucking damn better be living your life strictly by what the bible says, or don't fucking bring that bullshit argument up. (Not saying you guys are at all, I am simply stating my opinion of the fucking idiots who regard the bible as a way of life only when its convenient)
