I'm not really for or against it, but for those of you saying electrocution or letal injection is painless, read this: http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/some-examples-post-furman-botched-executions

I'm sure most of the time it works OK, but there is a shocking amount of stories of horrible things happening, such as people starting on fire while still alive in the electric chair, and taking many tries to get the job done.

The death penalty cost wayyyyyyy more than life without parole look it up. Death is an easy way out for terrible criminals solitary with minimal human contact would be much more justified.

Its way cheaper- death penalties overall cost states tens of millions of dollars surprisingly. The legal/court fees to make a death sentence happen are very pricey. Look it up as I said above...

I really dont have much of an opinion. I do believe alot of the sick twisted fucks in the world should be put down. But at the same time it just costs way too much because of the appeal process and having them sitting on death row for 20 years.

Although life without parole is undoubtedly more worthwhile than the death penalty, i still feel like some people don't even deserve to breathe over the crimes they have committed. that said, i feel like im a better person than these shit bags; therefore, i can't lower myself to their level and kill another human being. all in all, i say NO to the death penalty, but some of these scumbag skull fuckers really make my blood bubble.

some of you guys are pussies. certain crimes deserve the death penalty and we all know what they are. However, the death penalty should ONLY be used in a case where absolute proof of guilt is evident (self admission mostly, and other instances where a large group of people see it and it is obvious who is guilty).

I just think the whole prison system is a scheme. The jails should be empty.

Off topic: if I was wrongly accused of mass murder an was on death row and could choose any way to die, I would jump out of an airplane at 15,000 feet, right into the ocean. Hell of a way to go.

I think if someone is found guilty of pre-meditated murder, then they deserve to die. Planning to kill someone is straight messed up. If someone actually has that kind of mentality and is ok with killing other people, then why is it not ok to end their life.

The death penalty has been around for as long as humans.   It was written in the code of Hammurabai in Babylon like 2000BC or some shit.  We should just go back to crucifying people like the Romans did.  Sorry to blow your minds if your a religious person who thinks Jesus was the first and only to get crucified but that was actually the most common form of the death penalty until around 1000AD. There should be a death penalty but we shouldnt waste so much money making it humane.

No. Life in prison is, not only a worse punishment, but also far less expensive. Because there are no endless appeals processes to deal with.

I don't think there should be a death penalty. It just doesn't seem right to me. I think that giving the criminal a choice of death or life sentence would be fair. but just ending somebody's life, i dont know.

I don't know how much each option costs. I'm assuming its close to equal but ive got no clue. I do think that if they could create an efficient system for the death penalty to be carried out, it could save quite a lot of money. What's the point of paying to lock somebody for their entire life? The death penalty seems more logical but i just don't like the idea of killing somebody even if they deserve it.

I say that anyone who is charged with murder or rape should be killed if they were proven guilty without a reasonable doubt. ALSO, if they are deemed healthy by a doctor, their organs shall be used for transplants. This would not only get scumbags off the street, it would also reduce the wait time for organ transplants and the price of the organs.

Best of both worlds if you ask me.

Oh and one more thing, if they are not deemed healthy, take them to the firing line where 10 people aim for the head and 2 of them have bullets while the other 8 have blanks. Easiest and least painful way to kill a man. Plus it costs a whole 3-4 dollars for the bullets + blanks.

They arnt but in some states the regulations are new enough that some prisoners are grandfathered in. 2 years ago in Utah a guy chose death by firing squad. The state said no they didn't have the means anymore but he sued and won his case because he was convicted before they changed the law. The state had to set up a makeshift firing squad range

whose to say what's a just reason for ending someone's life? i'm sure if you asked most murders if the person they killed deserved it they'd say yes. you cant make laws out of subjective terms.

I'm sure you all know that, but the US is the only western country with the death penalty still in effect. The only other 'industrialized country' doing it as well is Japan. China too if you want to throw it in the mix, but not sure it helps your argument.

America is still a young country, going through its adolescence in some way.

It still needs to evolve on certain subjects, death penalty, human rights and religion are 3 of them.

yes, but i think it should be used as entertainment. for example, lets build a ring and make criminals fight each other like gladiators. or just make them fight animals in a giant death match.

Human rights? LGBT rights for example. But we could speak about torture, Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib, the Patriot Act, police brutality, unjustified wars etc. I am not saying other countries are pefect, but the US has still a long way to go in certain areas.

And really? You're really playing the 'all the other countries are softies for not keeping the death penalty' card?  You're not helping your side of the argument... And extremely cliche.

According to Amnesty International, the only nations with more executions last year than the United State were:

Libya
Iran
Oman
China
North Korea

...we do not have a stronger moral compass. We violate human rights and civil rights at home (i.e. fair pay for women, same-sex marriage, etc.) and in our dealings with other nations (i.e. Libya, the torture of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, the brutal killings of innocent civilians). Hell, we didn't have full-blown civil rights for African Americans until the 1960s. That's WAY later than most nations--and even THEN they were not well-off in terms of prejudice. The United States preaches tolerance but practice destruction.

Another person who doesn't understand the death penalty process.

It costs more to execute someone in the USA than it does to imprison them for life. It has absolutely nothing to do with the cost of killing them numbnuts but the legal processes involved.

If cost is your only rationale you should be arguing AGAINST the death penalty.

1. Innocent people do deserve to breathe. Innocent people have almost certainly died at the hands of the death penalty.
2. The government spends more money on the death penalty than on imprisoning people for life. That money could be spent on schools instead.
3. Some innocent people didn't blow their chance - the police and legal system blew their chance to convict the guilty person and instead convicted the wrong person.
4. Black people are far more likely to receive the death penalty. The colour of someone's skin shouldn't be a major determining factor in whether the government kills them or not.

conservative logic: assume there is equal value of a day old zygote in the womb to a conscious prisoner who may be innocent.

if there were a way to be certain of guilt i could be more accepting of it, but the fact that mistakes have been made is extremely concerning.
