can someone explain the different wheel compounds the 80a etc part and what compounds are good for what

Higher number mean harder wheel.
You wan't a hard wheel if you want to slide n' shit.
You generally wan't a softer, gripier wheel if you wanna go fast.

higher numbers are like 90 to the low hundreads, most skateboard wheels are around 99 durometer.  The letter is just the compund type im pretty sure.

The letter before the durometer is just a kind of scale. If you got a wheel with the letter "b" they're very hard. Don't think you can find longboard wheels that hard though.

i think 83 is actually soft. i have 80a's and theyre pretty damn soft, so i dont think 83a's would be that much harder. i dunno

Yeah, it also depends on how much weigh.
If you're a twig you probably want something a bit softer, if you're big you want something harder.

You can slide with 78a's, it's just harder to initiate the slide than a 86a for example.

i have the 75mm in heat 80a wheels on my allround board, they're grippy enough for allround cruising and carving but if i want i can still slide em, really happy about em ...

not really, an 83 is actually medium to hard... 86s are very hard

I have bustin premier formula 70mm 78a wheels....I put these on my first longboard I had and it was super hard to learn how to slide, but I find now that I can slide harder wheels so much better. I don't know if it is because I learned on wheels that are harder to slide on or if it is because it is just because I am getting better, but either way you can definitely slide on soft wheels.

the type of wheel your considering/ did consider, the 4prez, in heat, are both downhillmorietend less freeride wheels with squared lips. A 83a 4prez would behave much differently than the same durometer 83a stimulus.
You really need to consider the way you ride in wheel selection. and pay attention to the specs.
sorry for the probably late advice hope it helps.
I personally ride on otang purple stims and they work great initially really grippy but still able to slide, after being worn down and eventually coning they slide super easily, only downside is they can slide out on you while carving.

The inheat and 4 pres are very similar wheels but I would say the 4 pres is better because it is slightly smaller and can fit on most setups , both are great for downhill, same with the fly wheel. Personally I am more of a fan of abec 11 classic thane over o tang because it is a more predictable thane and I find the abec 11 wheel to be slightly faster. I am not sure on what type of riding you are into but, check out some of abec 11s other wheels like a flashback, zigzag, grippin. Also if you are getting o tang go with a 80a it is a better all around wheel duro, and stick away from stims they are truly awful.

Deffinetely go for Abec 11 flashbacks (81a). Theyre so smooth when you slide and theyre really easy to control.
