I've been looking and am leaning towards the 60d but was just wondering what else is really good for my budget and giving lense, mic, and glidecam sudjestions would be appreciated. 1) What is your budget? How much money can you spend right away, and do you think you can get more money to invest in the future? I'm thinking up to 1100$ not including accessories (lenses) 2) What experience do you already have with cameras? Have you ever even used one before? Have you helped your friend out with his camera? Have you owned your own? I have some camera and video camera experience between using my moms canon rebel something (doesn't shoot video), my gopro, and my dads Sony HDR cx130 which I filmed with all last year. 2) What gear, if any, do you currently have? (tripod, old camera lenses, mics, etc) Right now I have a nice big tripod a homemade slider, am planning to make an8ft boom and planning on buying a glidecam 2000? Soon 4) What are you planning to shoot and how do you want to use your camera? Are you going to use this with the sole purpose of shooting skiing? or do you think you might try other stuff as well (movies, documentaries, short films, etc) I will be making videos of all different types of action sports 5) Do you want a camera that you can hand to your friends, that could or could not have film experience, and let them shoot you? or will you be doing all the filming? Most of my friends that would be using it will have some camera experience 6) When filming skiing, how do you tend to shoot? (follow cams, leave it on record on a tripod and hike, film from a tripod, etc) I do mostly follow cams but some tripod filming and some leaving on a tripod and hiking(also I do this when on the tramp) 7) What computer do you currently have/use to edit (if not currently editing, what would you most likely use)? If you can provide specifics, such as hard drive space, RAM, processor size, that would be great. I currently use a 27in iMac 2.7GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 with a one tb hard drive and may get a 2tb external hard drive 7) What program do you currently edit on? How familiar are you with it (1- just learning; 10- I can make tutorials and know the keyboard layout) I am using iMovie and occasionally finalcut pro and would rate my self about a 8 with it

so, it sounds like you are looking at dslrs, what is your total budget (including lenses, mic, and glide cam etc.), and what tripod do you have?

i'm also assuming you want to do mostly video, so I would check out the panasonic gh2. Lastly, don't be worried about it being too complicated for your friends to use, it will be harder for them to use a glide cam than a dslr. All you have to do is set exposure and focus, which you would presumably have decently dialed in already if you are handing it off, and then tell them to point it at you. The hard part will be getting good and interesting (cinematically, not speaking for skiing ability) shots, but this would be the case with any camera

I'm not even sure what my total budget would be but I already have one canon lense and I'm not sure what the tripod is.

what canon lens? do you have a body too? and if theres any chance you can take a picture or read a brand name off the tripod it would be really helpful. And even a guess at budget would be great, guess low to be safe, then be pleasantly surprised if you have more. I'm not sure how much you know about dslr's for video, but in an average "complete" set up, the body is well under half of the cost.

Eg;
Mic $200+ (though many prefer using an external recorder)
ND filters - LCW fader $120, you can get by with a 3 stop though, and they are cheaper
glidecam $300 (essentially the minimum unless you get a flycam)
tripod $300 for a basic manfrotto, $500 for a sachtler ace (considered the minimum for acceptable telephoto shots by some)
SD cards $50 each for sandisk 32gb
Batteries vary by model, but you will want at least 1 extra for skiing, would be awesome to have a battery grip and 4 total, then you would never have to worry.

than lenses, basic kit is:
tokina 11-16 $700
tamron 17-50 $300+ (used)
canon 70-200 f4l $500+ (used)
and a legacy fast 50, which will be under $100

so even if you have a nice fluid head tripod, this setup will be close to $2500 without the body, and thats if you find deals on everything. Obviously you don't "need" all of this to start, but I'm just trying to make sure you have an idea of the sort of investment involved

the lens is a canon efs 15-55mm with a uv hase filter (i think)and the tripod is a sunpak platinum plus tripod/monopod i also have a 8,16,and 32gb sd cards ill also check everything in like an hour or two

neither one of those (lens/tripod) are ideal for video. The cards will be good if they are high speed

ok so looks like ill be getting some lenss and I've been using the sd cards with my dads video camera which is 1080p and i think it works fine and i don't think the tripod is too much of a big deal because i don't use it too much so i wouldn't really spend the money on a new one just yet.

the sandisk should be alright, but might be too slow, I heard class 6 was better for canon dslr's (for video). For the gh2 (hacked) you pretty much need a sandisk extreme, or one of the new sdxc's (theres a list of what settings work on which cards). Pretty much any tripod will be fine for static shots (to a degree), but to do pans you will probably want to upgrade. Have you thought about the gh2 at all?

Yes I have and I was hearing that the video quality of the gh2 hacked was better than the 60d but im not too sure about hacking it ...

hacking it is really easy, all you do is download the file you want, copy it on to the card, and then load it on the camera

I don't really have too much experience I can show you one of my edits though, I'll be using it for skimboard, surfing, skiing, longboard, and trampoline vids mostly and some pictures here and there, and I'd like to get quite serious but right now I'm just an average filmed not very technical and into it.

I'd say start out with a t2i or a t3i, they're not that much outta your pocket if you kinda grow away from filming or photography, they have excellent filming capabilities, and they're great cameras overall. I'd recommend getting one of the bodies mentioned and a lens with a decent amount of range. You already have some accessories so you're pretty good on that and if you decide that you really love it you can use the money saved by buying a t2i for getting some good lenses

also i just found one of my moms oldish film cameras and it has a nice tamron af70-300mm f/ 4-5.6 on it and she downs use it zoo i can basically have it, but i tried putting it on her newer cannon and it doesnt fit, would this work for video and what kind of adaptor wuld work?

i also found a minolta power zoom af 35-80 that fits the same camera as the other tamron lens

its a minolta mount, you will need a minolta to m43 adapter (for the gh2). I think my mom has the 35-80 on her film camera, as well as a telephoto, and while they are useful, they are not great for the gh2, because they are variable aperture and they lack aperture rings. I'm not even sure that you can really use them without electrical contacts. Either way though, the 14-140 that comes with the gh2 is not like a regular kit lens, it is made for video and is very sharp. last thing, the gh2 has a 2x crop, so every focal length you read is effectively doubled (for 35mm equivalent). it gets a little more complicated when you start talking about compression and depth of field, and there is plenty of info on that if you want to learn
