Is detuning a ski mandatory?

is detuning mandatory? or can i just go with out it, and let the rail do the work. i heard that if you dont it can rip your sharp edges out but how often does that happen. also what is buring or how ever the fuck you spell it.

no, not mandatory. i usually just let the rails detune them for me then wont sharpen again underfoot. burrs are the little fragments of metal that get peeled up on the edges. use a gummy stone to get those off if you're at all concerned. use google as well, or better yet, don't be afraid to ask question at a ski shop.

I would say yes it is. I catch like crazy on new edges, they just dont slide good.

Not at all. Myself and lots of other people I know TUNE my slope skis before they ever even hit snow. Get a nice base grind in there, soak them with wax, and bevel the edges. That way you can slide rails without any catching what so ever, and you can actually still ski, carve hard, and not feel like you're gonna eat shit all the way down in-between and after features.

I concur. Sliding rails on new edges is like chewing on a cotton ball. Grind 'em down good before you even hit snow and you won't have to worry about catching. If youer just straight sliding rails it is probably okay to slide them to detune, but if you're doing swaps and 270s on you probably have enough to worry about without your equipment getting snagged up. I have also heard that when your edges catch you are setting yourself up for your edges to rip out of your base. So detuned skis have the possibility of holding up longer on rails.

alright so should i just go have a guy at my shop detune them because i have heard that it takes forever with a file and then you have to clean them up with a gummie stone, so would it be easier to just go to a shop? also is there a problem with skiing burred edges

imo just detune them yourself, or if lazy detune them yourself just a bit so you don't catch, then over time let the rails detune them as you jib more...

People who detune are stupid. If I worked at a shop and a kid asked me to detune his skis I would straight up laugh in his face. Just take it easy for your first day out on new edges and do a few straight grinds. your edges will be in perfect shape to grind on in no time.

uhhhh...sorta. i used to think like you that you should just rip a fresh pair of sticks for a day and your edges will be fine, but it seems the more new pairs of skis i see sliding rails with fresh edges, the more damage i see on the new edges. detuning your skis before riding rails will help prevent excess damage to the edge such as cracks and big burs. sounds strange but it seems that edge cracks can occur almost immediately if you dont detune your skis before riding rails...


your a butthurt 14 year old by the way.

use any kind of sharpening/tuning stone by the way OP, using a file really isnt that hard either..

Just a mild detune underfoot is good enough for me.  However, if I have the funds, I want to get a bevel, what degree should I get?

Just take a file a detune the underfoot, has kept my chronics going for 3 years without a edge crack yet. But if u let the rail detune it for u, gonna make them not last as long.

Sure the rail could do it, but you are exposing the edges to way harsher forces, such as friction, than if you detuned them. Use a handfile, make them last longer.

WOW?! They actually let you work at a ski shop? You should know that the detuning of edges reduces friction which therefor reduces heat.

Many edge cracks occur from when you are sliding a rail, the ediges of the ski heat up, and when the ski lands in the snow, the rapid change in temperature causes the metal to crack. Applying edge pressure increases friction. Detuning the skis rounds the edge this decreases friction and causes the skis edge ton expand and retract less, reducing edge cracks.

But it is not truly necessary, it does help, but yes you can just go for it. The more aggressively you hit rails, the more important it is.

No but if its a park ski i would recommend detuning. If you hit rails with new sharp edges they are more likely to crack from cathing than if your ski is detuned.

man if you do decide to de tune, do it ur self... i had a brand new pair of park skis, told my shop i wanted them detuned, been going there for years and having this done, well the dipshit detuned them so bad the edges are rounded completely and its so bad that a base grind wont even fix the prob. so just be carefull who does it imo.

at my hill the park rangers will yank your pass if they catch you without detuned equip. so yes, detuning a ski is mandatory.

yes sir, that's why many ski brands will actually put a small area where the edge is missing at the tips and or tails of the ski so that the metal has a bit of room to expand.

Liberty uses softer metal which is meant to decrease friction somehow, you would think softer metal would mean more edge cracks, but nope, opposite way around. Problem with soft metal is that it gets worn away faster obviously.

not true. its pretty much mandatory. i had the same attitude as you at the beginning of this season on my new skis. the first two features i hit were boxes and i caught an edge on both of them and flipped forward, brought my skis to the lodge, dulled the edges and i was fine for the rest of the day
