Whats the best lense for a canon t2i! HELP

so im big into photography but just starting out, i have canon t2i with stock 50 mm lense and 75 - 200 mm

lense, it doesnt have image stabilizer so it sucks, i want to get a wide angle lense for filming in the park,

but i also need a good zoom lense, i film surfing and you can get too close you know, so i dont know

what the awnser is i s just want one all around good lense that has crisp quality, i think maybe a 15- 300

or something with a wide angle attachment could be good, idk if that even exist, i just need help, post

LOL OP this.

It's not really anywhere near your specific want, but your specific want doesn't exist.

You're going to need to put skiing and surfing together and think about what you care about more.

For a wide angle the Rokinon 8mm would be good, for surfing you're going to have to go over your budget by quite a bit.

thats what i thought, skiing is deffiantly more important, but now that i think of it, i am coaching skiing next year proball, so im thinking just a good all around lense, that shoots from like 75-300 or something you know? i just need a good crisp lense with image stability

Well then I would go with the 18-135, it's a kit lens for the 60D, but it's really good and has a perfect focal range for you.

Get a 50mm 1.8 II from Canon (absolutely every single person should have a fast 50 in their lens arsenal - and that lens is pretty solid for a 'cheapo' lens) It should cost you around 100.

Then find something like a 18-200mm lens on amazon or ebay or something. You could probably find a used one for 2-300 that could at least get you by. Sigma is probably the way you'd want to go, I'm sure you could find one of those for cheap enough.

A stock 50? I have never heard of that, so I assumed it was just a kit lens which usually goes 17-55ish.

Depending on the lens, and depending on the surf, 200 could be enough.

If not, pick up a 80-300 lens the same way, or even a super tele lens, and you could be set.

It would be so big though. For a tech/computer class I once designed a lens that went from 5mm circular fisheye to 200mm at F1.2 the entire way though, somehow I got the weight down to around 500 grams. Granted I also designed a ski where you could change the rocker profile by turning a key (like volkl's stiffness key), that shit cray! Ah grade 9...


This is probably the biggest range you can get that will still be "sharp".

OP tamron 17-50 is about as good as it gets for ski filming for the price... not the longest range but sharp as hell compared to other zooms in its class

well instead of everyone being a asshole, why dont you help, 18-270 is the perfect size lens for me since i take photos for skiing and weddings, so i like the amron 18-270 its a nice lens that is 650 not too $...

dude.... the 18-270 is NOT a good lens. The range is HUGE, the bigger the range THE WORSE THE LENS IS, ou have NO IDEA what you're talking about. We're not being ass holes, were trying to help you out. If you actually shoot weddings, you should have a 70-200 and probably a few nice primes (50, 85) and a 17-50.

everyone IS helping you man, you're just refusing to listen because you are so set on the 18-270. it's gonna be a shitty lens. range is too long, so the images from it are gonna be meh. it's also variable aperture, which isn't as big of a deal for photo but is still annoying.

I think you said you wanted a sharp lens, and this Tamron is not sharp at all. It is very very soft.

You should not try to get wide angle and tele in the same lens. It is more efficient to get two separate lenses for this. You will get much higher image quality for your money if you get two separate lenses.

You could replace your 75-200 with either a Canon 70-300 (more reach) or a Canon 70-200 (sharper & faster).

And then you could add a wide angle (Tokina 11-16) to your set, or a mid-range zoom (Tamron 17-50 is the best bang for buck).

Even if you can only afford one lens now, it is better to buy one now and the other later, than to throw your money away now on that shitty 18-270.

so my dad can only buy me one lens, iit has to be from best buy becuase we get 200 bucks off our next purchase, i dont know if they have everything you guys are thinking about.

so i film park and trampoline, alot, and i also do pictures, i am taking photos for my cousins wedding, they are tight on money so i said i would help out and do it for reallly cheap just to get started out and see what happens.

i do realize i sound cluless. and thats becuase i am, im new to this and honostly know not much about it.

but i do take some decent photos as im learning. dont beleive me go onto facebook and type in:

cole addison photography. all the pictures were taken with the stock 18-55mm lens.

i want a lens thats good for a all around lens that is crisp. so i can get close to people skiing and tramping to get good photos and videos. my freind has the tamron 17-50 and it takes amazing videos i dont now about pictures i never saw him take any.

i basically saying i want a nice crisp lens that can take photos at a decent range and close up.

i legit dont know if that lens exsits, but please help me out, becuase i almost bought the tamron 18-270 last night, glad i didnt now that i heard this.

lets get serious and help me out please.

It's really hard to get ONE lens that is gonna do everything for you. The tamron 17-50 is a great lens and I recommend it to anyone with a dslr. Then, saving up for a 70-200 would be your best bet. The canon 75-300 isnt THAT bad but it will leave you wanting more.

Well you'd honestly be better off selling that $200 off coupon to some one for $150 and buying from B&H. Best Buy is stupid expensive when it comes to camera gear, everything is way overpriced because people who would buy camera gear at best buy don't know what a fair price is. I you have to buy at bestbuy try and get them to price-match. Be careful about buying online if you go that route, I'd stick to B&H and Adorama. If a deal seams to good to be true, IT IS!

Canon's 18-135mm is decent, like its not going to be spectacularly sharp, a bit more than your 18-55, but it will get the job done. That and a 50mm F1.8 would be a good beginner setup. Both those lenses would also be available at bestbuy, but again, they might be more expensive unless there is a holiday sale or something. A 17-50 and a zoom would also be another option. Whatever you do don't buy the 55-250, worst lens that canon makes.

As for your pictures, to be completely honest, they are terrible. You need to try and avoid over-contrasting, its the #1 mistake that beginners make. If your willing to put the time in, photography is a great hobby. It's not hard to learn with the amount of help there is on the internet. There are tons of great tutorials on basic composition, how to expose a photograph (How aperture/shutter-speed/ISO affect your image), as well as tips for editing. If you shooting a wedding try to keep things more mellow, a great time to shoot portraits is closer to dusk, like around 6pm.

Just remember that photography is 99% skill and 1% gear, NS has the tendency to gear whore, even I do it sometimes, but you can always find ways to work around the limits of your gear. If you can't afford the lens setup you want, SAVE YOUR MONEY! In the long run it will be a better investment. Basically what I'm trying to say is buy a nifty fifty (50mm 1.8), keep the kit lens, and save your money till you understand photography and really know what you want to shoot.

I will admit my photos have a little to much contrast they didn't look that bad in photoshop , but thanks for the help! I still am iffy on what lens to get but I wanna upgrade and get one with a little more zoom and more crisp

There is no such thing as a crisp lens that covers a long zoom range. The more the glass inside the lens has to move, the less sharp that lens will be. Thats why primes (fixed zoom) are the sharpest lenses.

To support my earlier point that gear is 1% of taking a good photo:

I have a friend who shoots with a 7d and still uses his 18-55mm, he's had my 24mm on lone for a while because I've been using a 17-40L, but I'm getting it back soon so he'll be using it a lot more in the future. Roc Maloney also uses a 7d and his 18-55 and he is one of the best ski photographers in the game right now.

t2i, 18-55mm, and a 50mm 1.8 is completely fine for a beginner setup. I started there (XsI, not t2i) and after shooting for 1.5 years and learning, I decided to upgrade to a 60d and L glass and to be honest, I really didn't see an improvement in my photo's right away. Other than sharper images, the photo's still looked the same, they didn't evoke any more emotion than they did when I had my Xsi. I really regret upgrading so fast, I wish I'd waited till now to upgrade because I would gone with a better camera (7d, 5dc), instead I made a middle jump that left me wanting more.


Something to think about, I know your not thinking bodies, but its good to think about where you want to be in a few years with your photography and gear setup.

A decent tripod wouldn't hurt, but an 18-55mm and 50mm will be fine. You can use the on camera mic just get a little fluff thing (I don't know what they're called), someone makes them on here for like $7. DTF, Heath, and MB are going to tell you need $2000 of gear but thats complete crap. Yes it will be easier, but you can still produce quality work on a limited budget if you have the skill and put the effort in.

You dont know what you're talking about Zac, dont call me out just because I have a lot of gear.

I would never say he needs 2000$ of gear for no reason. Obviously he wants a tele and I think the best option for him (which I already mentioned) would be a tamaron 17-50 and a canon 70-200 f4L..

Actually I do know what I'm talking about. When did I say I was calling you out for having a lot of gear. My point is that you don't need $2000 of gear to make a good edit.

I guarantee all three of you could make dope edits with GoPro's, obviously you choose to shoot with your cameras because they give you more control. Its the same with a holga vs a dslr for photographers. You can shoot DLSR video with a kit lens and a cheap tripod, you don't need all the extras, it would be nice, but if you put the effort in and learn how to overcome the disadvantages of your setup you can produce quality work.

Don't you already have a 75-300?

If you want something BETTER than that, you need the 70-200 F4

For a wide lens, the kit lens works but the tamron 17-50 is cheap and I highly recommend it.

If you want something WIDER, the tokina 11-16 is the best you can get, but the sigma 10-20, rokinon 8mm or rokinon 14mm can be good cheap alternatives too.
