If you were a teacher, would you report me?

So for an English class assignment our class was supposed to write a 6-10 line poem that uses personification. I wanted to test my right to speech, so I wrote a poem about smoking marijuana. I emailed it to my teacher so I could get a grade, and she sent it on to the school administration as well as my parents. There is no doubt in my mind that it was a bad idea... but if you were in the teachers situation, would you have done the same thing?

Poem:
They say its an addiction, I say its a way to cope
It aint a big deal, I just really like to toke
Its just a fricking herb, nothing more than a flower
he has always been there, even in my darkest hour
It gets me through shit, it gives me the power
It gets me high, like im standing on the tallest tower
And it always tastes like fruity like nerds on a rope
cuz I only get the best from the left, west coast

teachers are mandatory reporters, meaning they are legally obligated to report anything of that nature (drugs/alcahol) to authorities, or they can get in trouble. For example, if you OD on weed tomorrow (ha) and she didn't tell anyone she knew you were uding it, she would be partially responsible for your death according to law.

Its high school its protocol.......in the 10th grade i had the assignment to make a poster that would explain the story: The Most Dangerous Game. I made a poster depicting a guy shooting another guy, which is basically what happens, the next week i was called into a conference. I just happens; and at least you asked you teacher if it was appropriate.

I once wrote the lyrics to a Frank Zappa song on the back of my calc exam in first year uni cause I was bored and it was the last little bit where they don't let people leave.

The marker got offended and refused to mark it. They then took it higher up and tried to get me expelled from university for it. Not even kidding. Even as far as getting the university lawyers on my ass. No idea what they'd try to get me for.

Buuut before shit hit the fan the dean of science stepped up for me and I guess told them they were being ridiculous since they're just lyrics to a song and more importantly they were on the back of an exam where a the marker has no business taking what's there into consideration for the mark.

On the final I wrote Twinkle Twinkle. I failed the class.

What should you learn from this? Teachers can refuse to mark something if they deem in offensive to them. No matter how ridiculous it is.

that was just a really dumb idea. not because youre going to get in trouble for it, but because you usually want to have a good reputation among teachers. now she and all your other teachers think of you as the stoner kid who thought it was a good idea to do an English assignment about how much you love getting high in high school. and thats not my opinion, its your teachers'.

Just from that sentence I can tell you're not using it in the right way. It's meant to be used for fun, unless you have cancer or some other form of severe disease and a legitimate green card you're not ready for it.

Now I guess you may have just been using that for the sake of a poem, but I really hope it's not true.

Every teacher is, but it's always up to their discretion. Some teachers let lots of stuff slide, while others are overly cautious. OP's teacher was just doing their job.
Never underestimate what teachers see and hear. The things we have laughed at in the staff room that kids think they get away with.....

No, akin to the post I quoted, here teachers are NOT mandatory reporters, a.k.a legally obligated to report any illegal activity or of that nature to the authorities.

Because teachers are not and never should be responsible for a student's actions, unless it's a veritable bomb threat, possible suicide thoughts (which can be talked over 1-on-1 first) or just completely crazy behaviour.

Anything else is the responsibility of the parents, and certainly a poem/essay/fucking term paper concerning Cannabis use should not be fucking reported to anyone. Fuck that makes me sick.

well my creative writing teacher said that a piece would only be made unconfidential if it showed that you or another student was in danger, and i think that this is a pretty universal opinion unless your teacher is pretty strict... plus my creative writing teacher got caught with an eighth in his car...

But that doesn't concern the student, or their activities? If there is large enough evidence in a student's behaviour and writings to believe the student is suffering, sure, inform the principal and authorities, but this is a case of using "drugs" and writing about it.

Maybe not the smartest thing to do if there are such strict policies in his school, but a good example of what is private and what is contrued from a single poem.

Say the marijuanav reference is actually a metaphor for the downfall of the common citizen/society and that it depicts the narrator as losing his life while on marijuana. BOOOM A!

I wouldn't have reported it. First of all, if I was your teacher, I wouldn't really have anything to do whether or you smoked weed on your free time. Second, it says nowhere that you actually smoke weed, and since it's a poem, it might as well be fiction. Just say that you imagined what it might be like to be a pot-head.

And it's ridiculous how much stuff you can't do over there, especially since you're such a "free" country. I wrote in a short story recently, about a murder, and I described the process in vigorous detail. Also the murderer was a heroin addict. Just saw today that I got an A.
