Are there any locksmiths or lockpickers on ns? I work for a local locksmith and thought it might be cool to dedicate this thread to people such as myself (ex product reviews, picking strategies, etc).

Also, if anyone is interested in it as a hobby feel free to ask questions!

Yeah, you might lose your keys or lock them in your car and have to pick your lock.

i have some expensive lock pick videos i burned off somebodies DVD set for a locksmithing course. i may upload them at some point if there is enough desire

Alright. There are two types of actual lock picking; Raking(scrubbing) and single pin picking. Raking basically involves starting at the back of a cylinder and pulling to the front with the pick while applying a VERY SMALL amount of pressure on a torque wrench. Its pretty basic and easy to pick up but is less reliable than Spp. It also becomes extremely difficult when dealing with pick resistant pins

SPP basically involves pushing up on the pins one at a time until they are locked on the sheer line. It's wayyyy more difficult to learn but is far more reliable and can be used on locks with security pins etc..

Ill embed some video tutorials and such so you get a better idea about what im talking about

also if you do have a real interest, check out lockpicking101.com Its a fourm with a toooon of info on it; however its pretty much dead and rarely gets posters

I might as well throw this in since most people seem to just want information....

Theres also many different ways to pop a lock (pickguns, bumpkeys, creditcarding) if you guys have any questions about any of these i can answer em!

Also, if you guys want general information like how to cut keys, rekey locks, or any type of lock related question shoot away

With the locksmith i work with, i also do a TON of lockouts (both car and home/buisness) so im pretty well versed on those as well. (and have some pretty crazy stories)

I used to bumpkey my way into locked classrooms and buildings in highschool, shit was fun. I wish I knew how to actually pick one though

Yeah for sure. Ill get pictures and throw em up. I have my personal kit of stuff i always carry with me but as far as tools, key cutters, and car tools (slim jim, gm tools etc) those are all the shop. I can bring some of em home with me on saturday and take pictures and explain what is what and how to use it

My friend tried picking the lock on the trunk of my car with a cell phone antenna and a hairpin. The antenna broke off in the lock so the key couldn't fit into the lock after. fucking idiot.

dont buy the pick multitool for a beginners set. they dont give you as much response and you cant feel the pins at all. i have the southord MPXS-14 and its sweet.

Definitely. The thing I posted is more of a backup. I keep it tied to my car keys in case I ever get locked outside my house or I gotta help a friend out.

Its illegal here in Canada unless you have some sort of locksmithing permit but really, I don't think they care.

lockpick here, It really depends. you may have a school with new, nice locks that will prove near impossible to pick. Or they have older ones and you can pick them with relative ease. post a pic!

Depends on the school. If you have a school in the US the chances that you have a schlage or kwickset is pretty likely; however, at least at all the schools around where i live they're generally 6 pin rather than the far more common 5 pin(typical house lock). Just depends on the school tho. figure out the brand, and thatll give you the type of keyway you need, then figure out how many pins and that translates to how many cuts your key needs

And as far as how a bump key is made, a bumpkey is basically when you have a key that is cut down to the deepest cuts (usually 9's) and then they have small ridges between the cuts. Using the key is pretty simple; push the key all the way in and then pull it out a notch; then, apply a slight pressure to the key clockwise or counterclockwise depending on the lock and give it a pretty decent smack with a screwdriver head or something similar. I use a key machine to make my bump keys; ive never made one with just a file so ill hafta look into it. They sell em online for ultra cheap tho.

I'm not even sure I wanna help you with this... But at my previous school they had a kind of lock you couldn't put any tension to hold the pins up.

so in order to make a bump key all you need to know is how many pins there are?

then you just find any old key like that guy did with the same number of ridges as the pins in the lock you wanna pick, file it down, put it in, apply pressure, then tap?

Just an fyi for everybody who thinks picking is the easiest thing in the world. I work for my dad during summers and breaks and picking is not nearly as easy as they are making it sound. You can sit there picking a stubborn lock for a half hour and not get it. Also I found bump keys to work a lot better on car door locks than residential or industrial locks.
