I am going to buy a 22LR the the beggining of summer and i was wondering if anybody has any input on the subject. Semi Auto or Lever Action? which do you guys prefer?

The 2 I am considering right now are the Ruger 10/22 takedown, and the Henry Golden boy Lever action.

For .22 I prefer a semi because ammo is cheap and fast follow ups are fun. But if it's your first ever gun get something in a caliber more suitable for self defense. Once you have that base covered then by fun or recreation guns. But it would suck to spend the summer practicing and not even have a viable tool if you ever need to defend yourself

Depends on what you want it for and other things.

Lever action = more fun to me, easier to clean, less to go wrong, go through less ammo.
Semi auto = cycles faster (more lead downrange faster)

May I ask why a 22? Are you wanting to get into shooting? Needing to get rid of pests? Bored?

you just have to spend some time and do research on the subject. There are more platforms for the 22LR that are available in semi-auto and because the rounds are so cheap, you dont need to worry about how much your using. The ruger 10/22 is one of the most well known 22s on the market and are extremely simple to use i personally thought about getting one but then opted for the smith and wesson 15/22. The nice thing about the 10/22 is that you can accessorize the shit outta it. there are tons of companies out there that make stocks and foregrips for the thing. They are extremely simple to take apart so if you want to change from a classic looking gun with a wood body to a tactical all synthetic body, within 2 min. There a lot more on the subject, pm me if you have questions

sig 522. its the best 22lr you can buy. 1200 rounds through mine without a single jam. ruger 10/22 would be a close second for reliability.

the sig is gonna cost twice as much...but its worth every penny. its built as well as its big brother, the 556

Get an ak 74 5.45 surplus is almost as cheap as 22lr. Plus you can go hunting with it and protect your self. IMHO 22lr are worthless unless at the range

Definitely a 10/22. Check out Volquartsen, their set ups are great. The leaver would be cool, but you'd have a lot more fun with a 10/22. At least I do.

I was actually just looking to get my first gun as well. I'm thinking some sort of 1911 though not a colt because I'll be looking to spend closer to around 500. Sorry for the thread jack but if anyone has any suggestions i know there is about a thisand of these. but lever action rifles are really fun in my opinion. Why only a 22?

I have an AR15 it's extremely versatile. I know it like that back of my hand. It provides easy use on a Light on the rails which is crucial when something goes bump in the night. The ammunition options are also ideal. A shotgun with buckshot or a 9mm handgun have a much higher chance of overpentatration which is a huge consideration if you live in a residential neighborhood. What would you suggest since you seem informed enough to comment on the issue. I could use a shotgun or my handgun but I trust and consider my AR the best choice

There is no point in buying a beater 1911 they are very finicky and need to be well made to function regularly and reliably if you only have 500$ you can't afford a 1911 worth having. If you want a .45 look for a used HK or Sig if you wait long enough you could get deal in your price range. Gunbroker is your friend

You can get a sa loaded used for around that price if look. These are the best value in 1911.. Personally I'd rather have a glock 20 17 rds of is a lot of firepower

I've heard bolt don't have as many mechanical problems as lever. plus I think they're a bit more bad-ass.

Yup, this is the best place to start. There are a variety of models to choose from, tons of aftermarket parts available if you so desire, and overall it's great rifle that is very fun to shoot. Better now that Ruger finally brought a quality 25 round magazine to the market as well.

i dont know how old you are or what application you want it for, but 10/22 hands down. at 23, i have plenty of guns all kinds, and just went on and bought one. had one when i was a youngin and it took me right back, easy to use and really good for getting the basics down.

That Sig 522 looks sick, but if I was going to get something like that, I wouldn't get it in .22LR. Seems like an overly elaborate plinker. Same goes for the GSG and AR's like the Mossy Tactical 22.

OP, I agree with most everybody else: the Ruger 10/22 is your best bet. Modification and parts support is really good.

LOL you think your .223 isn't going to "overpenetrate?"

00 Buck and 9 mm hollowpoints are fine for 99.9% of situations, and if I have to choose between killing the fool who is coming after my wife and dog or buying my neighbor some new siding, that is a no brainer.

People with too much time on their hands over think things like penetration, energy transfer, and stopping power.

thats the point. its big and heavy, just like the 556. difference is the 522 is $700 cheaper and I get to shoot 500 rounds for under $20.

the mossy 22lr is a piece of shit, which is really sad because the 500/590 is the most reliable shotgun you can buy

from a country stand point i say get the ruger 10/22 mostly because you can do anything with it, it holds the value and if you want you can buy kits online and make it look like a tommy gun and shit but if your wanting a gun for home protection or self defense its deffenitally not worth shit.

Flangible 556 will penetrate significantly less than either buck or 9mm it's science not preference but your right my rounds can also over penetrate just not to the same extent as some other choices. But more importantly I know that gun the best of any, it has great compacity and has a dedicated light on it and is accurate as hell. The most important part I stress is my familiarity with the AR15 and it can compete with or out preform a handgun or shotgun. Once I get my tax stamp back and cut my barrel down to 10.5 inches it will be even better hahah but then I'll want a suppresor to go with it... The spending never ends guns are a black hole of fun

i have a snub nose 9mm it's extremely one dimensional. i know it like the back of my hand. it facilitates a quick and easy draw when something goes bump in the night. the ammunition options are varied however i always carry hollows. it is fiercely accurate within 10 feet, which if you look at statistics is pretty much always the situation. overpenetration is not an issue if you are accurate. i could use a shotgun or one of my rifles but i do not have a concealed carry permit for those.

I have a Ruger 10/22 I got for my 11th Birthday. So much fun to go out and plink some targets with it and its nice not have to use the bolt or lever after every shot. With the 10 round clips Its really easy to use a lot of ammo, but its dirt cheap. And if you ever get board with it and have money to blow its one of the easiest guns to find aftermarket stocks, barrels, clips, ect for.

It made me cringe to write the check but it will be worth it. The suppressor is going to take a while of saving. I want a Surefire and between the can and the stamp it will cost almost as much as my gun I think it's insane you have to pay $200 brib to the federal government everytime you want to cut your own barrel or buy a suppressor which in Finland and other European countries are actually encouraged for hearing protection and to prevent annoying people who live near the shooting range. America is still wrapped up in the "silent assassin" narrative they don't realize it's mostly for flash reduction, use with night vision and indoors shooting that is so hard on the hearing.

I'm deffinatly not arguing that 9mm is a bad choice. It's a great choice but at home where I can use what ever I would like (unlike CCW) I prefer the AR. What gun do you have?

Posted before I was done typing but what ever they sell you it for you will have to pay upfront then add 200$ and a 6 month ish wait from the BATF to approve your form and you can pick it up. But $400 would be very cheap for a suppressor. Good ones start around 800 and go way up

arent you like 14? pretty sure you can not legally buy a gun, and no offense but by your posts I would not want you to have one. You seem like a fun ass person to get drunk with but something scares me about a drunk teenager with a gun.


and I would choose the ruger, out of those two. but my recommendation will be a german sport guns (gsg) tactical .22 LR. great gun and one of the best semi automatic .22's on the market.

Oh and for those asking why a 22? Ammo is dirt cheap 500 rounds for 20 bucks, also arguably the best zombie dispatching caliber because it is easy to stockpile huge ammount of ammo becaus itis so cheap and readily available and it is the a relatively quiet round. The Colibri subsonic round is only as loud as a pellet gun but could penetrate a zombie skull from close distances.

I am purchasing a Firearm to do hood rat shit from this guy i know. He is sanding off all the serial numbers and knicking up the chamber to ruin the ballistics for a gram of crack.


But seriously i am 16 not 14 and i am buying it for plinking and small game hunting.
My mom is buying it for me, she is one of the conservative doomsday types and she is more than phsyched to finally get a gun in the house.

If i am not mistaken you live in Summit? or hangout here alot? well no worries my friend i wont fire my weapon if i am more than a six pack deep.

but seriously about the six pack. I would never fire a weapon with anything other than nicotine in my system. Thats just a bad idea, i have a buddy though who bought a survival rifle and was convinced it was a good idea to head up to a cabin in the woods, take acid, then shoot his 22. He is a dumb fuck.
