Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

From what i have read Embry-Riddle is one of the top choices in college for aviation in the country. I was wondering if any NS members attended Embry-Riddle or is going to go and if so what campus did you go to and for what major?

I you want to lock yourself into something you've never tried at all, go there. And isn't it in Florida? Are you trying to become an aero engineer or a pilot or what?

I am waiting to have my private pilot check ride at the moment and am a junior in high school. I am still not sure if I would get a degree in strictly a pro pilot orgasm or for aviation management with am mba

DO NOT GO TO A STRICTLY AERONAUTICAL SCHOOL. Get endorsed privately and major in something else. The aviayion industry is to volitile.

I personally wouldn't recommend one of those top aviation universities. I'm currently working on Instrument Training. Im going to MSCD in Denver, which is pretty cheap in state, and then you get to pick whichever area flight school you want to attend for flying. Try looking into a cheaper school that has the program and fly at a local flight school. I was looking at one of the aviation universities flight fees and they were charging about 250 an hour for a Cirrus SR20. I'm currently paying 140 an hour for a 2005 Cessna 172 G1000. Even 140 is pretty expensive and you can get it down to about 80 an hour for an older plane. So, honestly, i think those aviation universities charge way too much. Plus you're going to be making close to nothing for a few years building hours after you graduate.

I couldn't agree more. I looked into all the major aviation schools, UND, Embry, etc. intending to major in Pro Pilot. I am currently majoring in Marketing and working on licenses and ratings. Although this takes longer I thought it would be good to have a back up degree in case my aviation career takes a turn for the worst. And not to mention I won't be 80k in debt after I get out of school.

Thanks for that info. Like i stated earlier i am a junior in hs about get my VFR. Right now i flying at the airport that Indiana State University does their flight training at and it is also $140/hr for a 172. I was looking a Purdue also it is in state and has a better facility than where i am at at the moment

the programs at aviation specific university cost a lot more, but you're paying for the name, and the name goes a looooooooong way if you're looking to make it in the aviation industry.


Being interviewed for an airline job and having ERAU on your resume looks a hell of a lot better than anything. It all depends on what you're looking to do with it. If you're deadset on being a pilot, go there. If you have any doubts whatsoever about any of it, don't.

Aviation can be a brutal industry.

I actually was told from someone ( I can't remember who though) that a lot of employers do not like to see ERAU because the students are always training in nice weather. Don't know if its true or not, but I can see that point of view.

This. Get a backup education, pilots get paid shit. You can make more money as a secretary.

That said, go for it, just be warned

It's in Arizona near Prescott and it's an amazing flight school, my best friend seriously considered going there before going to the Coast Guard. If you're serious about your pilot’s license, then this is the place for you. However, the tuition rates are absolutely horrible unless you can get some good scholarships. Good luck!

You're also going to be flying when the weather is always beautiful. You will get no experience in low VFR conditions. And the weather is what causes most general aviation crashes.
