The right powpow ski for me

Hi guys. I'm going to be attending University of Denver next fall and am going to be needing some powder skis. I currently have Ar6's from either 06/07 or 07/08 (the ones with the animals). They're SUPER flexy. The only skis I've ever seen that are flexier wer 140ish line invaders.

Anyways I demoed a pair of JJs last february and I thought they were great with powder but also super fun to carve on at high speeds. Any other skis in this boat? perfect for powder but also fun to cruise on

Any recommendations on a cheap but reliable binding as well?

My price limit for a whole set up is about $700 I'd say. Preferably around $500, and not against buying something used in B/S/T.

On a sidenote, that was a rant and a half haha I just took an adderall to do a couple of english essays. I should probably start them. Fuck me sideways.

im about ur size i have the JJs in 175 absolutley love them by far my favorite ski ive ever tried. you would not regret buying them u would only grow to love them more and more. other then JJs S7s are good, super 7s, surface new lifes (a little stiffer) rocker 2s, these are all great skis

I have 185 jj's am 6 foot 180 lbs and also live in denver.


they worked great for the few powder days we had this year. in my opinion it is the perfect one ski quiver since I can rail groomers on it and still ski powder. Since i moved here I find myself rarely skiing park any more and i wouldnt even think about taking a ski that is about a grand with bindings on it into the park anyway.

To be honest, I hated the JJ's. They are pieces of shit compared to other skis. They are fun in pow if you like to jib, but they are horrible on hardpack. You slide around to much, and get a bunch of flopping around in the tip and tail.

If you want a versitile powder ski, I would go with the 181 Caylor, or even the 191 Caylor lite. Its got a 120mm underfoot, but skis like its an all mountain ski. Most people that own Caylors use them as their everyday ski, but shred so nicely in the pow. They are pretty versitle when it comes to hardpack/crud, MUCH more than JJ's, S7s, and OPUS.

Second, If you want a powder ski that is meant for strait up pow, and not very versitile, you cant go wrong with the Billygoat. They are 116mm underfoot, and from what I hear, they are so fucking sick in the deep powder. Wont be as good as Caylors on the hardpack, but will do the job. If you want a strict powder oriented ski, go with the Billygoat. The specs for next year are even better than this years. I have not ridden them personally, but have spoke to many people who are really stoked on them.

Lastly, there is the Jeffrey. These are more all mountain oriented with the 108mm underfoot, but defiantly rip it in the powder. This would be your go to ski with anything under 8in of fresh snow. It is your one ski quiver. As like the BG, the specs for next year defiantly are worth waiting for. This would be the ideal ski, because it can literally do anything.

These would be my recomidations for a pow ski.

Sorry for being an ON3P fanboy, but they truly are the bomb.

If you can control your skis you can dig an edge into anything, especially if you tune your edges like you are supposed.

^I did rent them for 2 days at the beggining of the season. I was the second person to ride them. Im a big guy, i just think they are to soft for me. Like i said, if you like jibbing and stuff in pow, then go for it, but there are better skis out there. To OP, i have heard nothing but good things about the FKS series. They are quite pricey though. EVO usually has some decent cheap bindings in their outlet, look there.

I have some 175 JJ that are too small for me, not the best powder ski but they are great for a fisrt pair of pow stick

I ski a din of about 8 or so. I'd definitely say I'm a type 3 skiier and I'm a ski instructor at my local hill. Ski probably 40/40/20 park/groomers/trees and whatever powder I can get this year.

To the guy that recommended DPS skis... I have actually never even heard of them. Sounds legit, I'll go check out TGR. Anyone else ever ridden these?

well here are just some things to think about with bindings.

I am a level 3/maybe 3+ on a race course.


My park skis are mounted with look px12 jibs. I ride the din at 8. always released normally sometimes to easy I thought, but on a rail or icy jump I would rather have my ski come off then tear an acl.

my powder skis have Look p18's, I ride them at 11. they have also released when I wanted them to, meaning I have never had a prerealse and the two falls I had this year with those skis on one ski ejected each time and I havent had any injuries or strain on my legs from them.

so I find this strange, I have had many other bindings that I have had at other dins, so i would say it definitely caries from person to person and binder to binder. with you using an 8 din I would recommend the FKS 140, or the older 150 with the metal toe.

Cant seem to find any under $800 or so either, without bindings. Definitely out of my price range - I'm shooting for something around $400-500. Those skis do look sweet though, reading those reviews had me sporting a full on hard-on

Alright guys, I'm really leaning towards the surface new lifes right now. I found a pretty sweet deal on colorado freeskier for $350. My friends have had issues in the past with surfaces literally snapping, but I don't really plan to take these into the park. I like the symmetrical design because my AR6s are centermounted as well. What worries me is A: The really stiff flex, especially compared to my AR6s, and B: The lack of camber underfoot. I have never skiied a ski without any camber or reverse camber whatsoever. What will carving groomers feel like? Will I be able to carve switch on groomers?

Also leaning towards the 184cm pair because the effective edge is pretty small. Opinions on this?

I'd recommend against the surfaces. They're good skis but there are far better choices. As mentioned above, the on3ps are pretty badass. I personally didn't fall in love with the JJ either. It was rideable but not amazing in my opinion. I've been on the line opus for the last two seas

Dude mobile sucks. They need to fix it. Anyway, been on the opus the last two seasons and I'm in love with it. Thing rips pow and then can jump right onto the groomers and shred. I've lapped the park alot on mine as well. Super versitile ski. Some will tell ya the turning radius on it is too tight though. I found this to be a non issue in pow and has actually saved my ass a few times where I had to stop quick on a squirrelly landing. The turning radius is also what makes it shine on groomers. I even ran em down a bump run with my cousin who skis bumps exclusively and whooped her ass to the bottom on the opus. She couldn't believe I beat her that bad on a pow ski and trust me, it's not due to my skill because I haven't ridden bumps like that in years. It's a sick sick ski. Def recommend it. Good luck either way and have fun out in Colorado.

for your purposes they would work. they are on the heavier side of things for bindings in that din range tho.

For bindings I'd say look/Rossi fks or marker Griffs/jesters. I know your tryin to go cheap but def don't skimp on bindings. The px14s are tough but noticeably heavy.

Go big on any rockered ski - more stabilty at speed, in pow and on drops but still nimble due to short effective edge.

No. I love my Bent Chetlers in all conditions and they're also 123 in the waist. They obviously won't be great in bumps and ice but they'll still be manageable and they'll rip everything else.

As for bindings unless you want a touring option get FKS, best binding ever.

I can get a ridiculous hook up on the 99s at the moment but can't really justify it, so hard to say no though, they are just the perfect all mountain mid fat.

181 caylors I have them and they kill everything deep pow, hardpack, anything, I even take them on park jumps from time to time they are super poppy and are great for pow plus they rip groomers with very little chatter if you want a pow ski that can do it all caylors are perfect.

New life's are fun skis. You'll dig em. My buddy rocked em for a while till I made him ride my opus. I've ridden them and def had fun. They rip the deep stuff and a fairly agile on groomers. The three stage rocker makes em feel like floppy skiboards on groomers but that isn't so much a bad thing. 360 shuffle typesa stuff is real easy and they're pretty fun on boxes and tree grinds. They'll def shine in the deep stuff though. I've got a few friends in P-city who will ride no other ski on a pow day. As far as bindings go, you could get away with the px14s but I'd def recommend saving for another month or two and getting look/Rossi fks types or the higher end markers. Go to evo.com and do a little research on bindings and then just google search what ya want in shopping and then filter low to high price. Good luck.
