Should colleges have freeskiing teams to recruit nsers?

i think its only fair, right now you can get into a good college easily with the small niche sports like crew, lacrosse, and waterpolo... i think colleges should have freeskiing teams too...title 9 will screw it over tho...

aalso there are alot of clubs and stuff that can give away scholarships as well for alot of colleges.

could only work in really dedicated ski towns,   but otherwise i dont see why not.   Its just not something that schools usually come up with on their own

the schools with the best riders don't and it lets everyone ride together and do their thing without coaches.
...and on the coach note who would you possibly get to coach a park team? keep in mind that the best basketball and football coaches played themselves, I don't think there are very many retired pro skiers who are looking to coach a bunch of kids who are out inventing tricks that weren't around last week let alone ten years ago.
plus good clubs have more than big enough budgets to take care of everything all the riders could possibly want aside from maybe summer camps and free lift tickets which also doesn't matter because college passes are ridiculously cheap anyway.

i would love to do it, it is just totally unrealistic. professional skiing does not produce enough of a profit for anyone to be granting large scholarships to people.

Terrible idea...I would think a huge time park skiers need to make money is between 18-22, and NCAA doesn't let athletes get paid, who would drop their sponsors and such to ski for a school? Jeremy Bloom(sp) dropped out of playing college football so he could still ski and get his sponsor money.

You'd be surprised how many schools have freestyle "teams" or at least clubs. Notably UVM and CU boulder have legit teams with coaches, practices, etc. but we have some guys who shred together at UW that we call a team and are a registered club through the school. I know there are national championships every year but they clearly don't represent the best college skiers in america because people don't really have the time or money to fly long distances to compete in some comp when theres way more money and exposure in comps locally. Or if your good enough and go to U of U or Boulder, then you would just compete in the major comps and take some time off school ie: Wallisch, Martini, etc

the real reason is because if you had ever received money from a comp, you would not be considered an amateur. You have to be amateur status to participate in college athletics. That's what the ski (race) team coach said

It's allready happening in the uk. most of the universities in the uk have a race and freestlyle team and there is national dryslope comps for scotalnd and england. national indoors leading to a uk wide final and also there is a uk wide comp week in the alps. doesnt matter if you're pro or not all you need is a uni matriculation number to compete and you can still collect on your sponsors. yes most comps are won by sponsored riders but thats expected and it allows non sponsored riders the chance to show that they are sponsor worthy. obviously the sponsorship is on a whole different scale but the comps are graduate rider organised and non-uni pro rider judged, so generally there are no major disputes over standings.The best also have the oppourtunity to ride in the world uni winter games.

My coach for my freestyle team used to be a world cup aerialist and he is truly amazing. He keeps up with new tricks in skiing and he knows everything there is to know about how to do every trick. Cork, Rodeo,Butters, Doubles, you name it. He teaches us to actually do tricks correctly and safely so we don't end up shitty park rats that cant do shit all. We improve so much more in a season because of our coach.

I don't think its a great idea to have a college "team" cause it would be the same as a group of friends just going out and shredding which they'd already do.

Overall I think this is stupid, but I do wish that schools like Utah/Bouler/others would at least get some funding from the school to produce edits to attract people to go to the school, kind of like the USC ones. I can't even imagine if you got all the best skiers from the U together and put together an edit with some funding behind it. SO many good skiers/filmers, and I really think it could be beneficial to the university to have something like this out there.

It would also be extremely limited in regards to location (primarily CO, UT, VT, WA, NM?) and very few of these schools have "big" sports programs, excluding UU, CU and DU that are close enough to mountains.

Besides, it would probably end up like NCAA racing anyway. Ex-National team skiers from Europe and Canada getting a free education to ski.

Ever heard of Title 9? Thats why there are woman sports such as gymnastics, squash, golf, etc.

They also have a much larger competition pool compared to freestyle skiing. Freestyling skiing as I mentioned above is limited to a few select few areas, much like racing. The big difference between racing and freestyle is that it hinges on a need for a competitive body for ranking, competitions, and venues. There is a lot more work than just putting a team together and sending them to a mountain to ski. Ski racing already has FIS, USSA, USCSA, and IOC cooperation. Additionally, they have hundreds of competitions already organized in Canada and the United States. There is also the age factor, NCAA ski racing has been around for decades.

We have seen the uproar about freestyle skiing in the Olympics. Now imagine if there was a large governing body that had to evaluate every competition, instill regulations for equipment, drug tests, and professional behavior on and off the slopes.
