NS golfers, I need your help!

I am starting a job as a caddie and yesterday was my first day of training. If you think park skiing is elitist, golfers sure as fuck do not mess around. Anyway the point I'm trying to get to is I am a gaper golfer and am looking for general knowledge on golf. Probably the hardest thing for me are all of the golf terms in general like fairway rough and all that wonderful shit. So here it is guys. Any tips?

I know nothing about "real" Golf, but I say fuck the rules, bring some anarchy to the greens, bring out your style, steeze and cumulative peace. Be a gaper, change the game, form it and bend it under your grip and make those golfers believe the New True Word on Teeing.

sounds like your not really a caddy but a golf bag carrying bitch.

in that case just learn the different clubs, and all the accessories needed to play a round.

chances are whoever's bag youre carrying is not going to ask you for game advice.

First of all before ANYTHING you should learn golf etiquette. It doesn't bother me if you aren't that good of a golfer, but if you have shitty golf etiquette I can get upset and I will call you out. Its very specific in different than just being quiet and stuff. Google "golf etiquette" and get reading. The more you have the better off you'll be and more tips you will get as a caddy.

-Offer to clean the players ball once he is on the green, while the player reads it. A little can go a far way.

Other than that, I would just say go to the library and read a beginners golf book. I am sure there is a How To Play Golf for Dummies book out there (Those things are incredible to get introduced to stuff). Other than that I would try to find some friends or adults you know to take you out golfing and just ask questions while you play.

I wouldn't worry too much about the terminology, you won't be asked for help choosing a club or anything too complicated.

something you need to know as a caddie is that some of the older guys playing out there are very strict with their caddies. I've played with a few guys who don't want their caddies to talk unless spoken to. Also they get irritated is they are playing in a group and another person is socializing with their caddy. I am in no way like this, but it is very common.

Basic clubs:

Driver: Usually the biggest club in the bag, used off the tee
Fairway drivers: Look like a driver but a smaller club head
Irons: Usually 3-9. Used off the tee of in fairways.
Wedges: Pitching wedge, used for mid-short game.
Sand wedge: more open face, which means shorter distance pitching

Lofts: Very open face. Will have a degree on the bottom, usually 52-62 degrees.

Putter: Self-explanatory.


You also might find some Hybrid clubs, which are clubs that kind of look like an iron/driver's chode brother.

First off you're not a caddy, you're carrying bags, there is a difference a caddy gives advice on shots, clubs to use, wind speeds, green speeds, etc. Why do you think PGA golfer caddies make such good money?

Dude honestly golf is a complex game whoever says it isn't is ignorant. You should google golf etiquette learn as much as you can about, learn about the different types of clubs. different types of wedges... Just go buy a golf for dummies book or something. Not to be rude but I have no idea why a country club or course would hire a kid as a caddie with no basic knowledge of the game. It's kind of nonsensical.

Seriously how the hell did you get this job?

Reading the green, getting a view of the putt you have to make by analyzing the layout of the green. Are there different levels of the putt, which way will it break, how much will it break, is it up hill or down hill etc etc etc.

know the course (i.e., the layout/yardages)

keep the clubs clean

know which clubs to pull (again, goes back to knowing the course)

know when to shut up and vice versa

dress well

pull the flag once he's on the green (i think)

repair divots, unless he does (players usually do that)

give him space (i.e., out of sight) when swinging

Sorry to not be more specific about this. I'm 16 and don't know shit about golf. Caddy probably isn't the right word so bag bitch is more appropriate in this case. But even as bag bitch I reall have no fucking clue what I'm doing. It's not so much a job as a training program to integrate my class and I into the golf "world". It's kind of a system shock to me coming into it and not really knowing anything though. To reiterate, it isn't a job it is training. I made the thread just to get some help learning as I know that a large amount of people here enjoy playing golf in the summer.

I "caddied" at a country club when I was young, and without working knowledge of the game it would have been super painful. It already kind of was dealing with such inflated egos. Just dont step in someones line on the green, and be up front with your golfer about your noobishness

I was a caddy so I'll throw you some basic advise. Rule 1: do what they say, I know it's a bitch but the more shit you take the more they are going to pay you (hopefully). and don't give them attitude either when they make you work a little (refer to previous sentence). Rule 2: be very aware of them, they are there to play golf, not watch you caddy (be quite and don't move when someone is swinging, always be 1step ahead of your guy or guys, also helping other caddies out if they need it). So make them do as little work possible by offering to do shit for them. ie, wash golf balls or clean clubs and raking sand traps, pulling the pin when they putt(

zomgz im a caddy too! its awesome, pays a lot, well a lot for a 14 year old, and you learn a TON from the members you caddy for. ive golfed for 6 years though so i didnt have your problem but go play with a friend or relative or someone who knows how to play cause actually doing it will help you learn better than reading what someone else posts or reading a book. someone already said it but etiquette is the most important thing by far and you cant really learn that without playing a round or two.

And putting it back in when they are done. Also DO NOT LOSE THEIR BALL ( all of which is very important. Rule 3: it's probably going to suck your first time so watch other caddies and learn. Practice makes perfect. Good luck

keep your mouth closed and observe both the golfers and the course. a good caddy should be able to impart crucial information about the golf course; hazards, slope of the green, pin placement, etc. so just be open to learning as much as possible.

never ever step on his line when he is putting. And always ask him if he wants you to tend the pin if he is putting off the green or from a distance where the hole may be out of sight.

I was a caddy for 5 years at one of the top 50 private clubs in the country.  John Elway is a prick by the way.  Anyways rule #1 - learn to read peoples personalities.  This is one of the biggest factors on whether your day goes well outside of the person's golf game for who you are caddying for.  #2 know basic golf terminology and etiquette, duh.  #3 have some fucking personality.  After caddying long enough you learn to hate it and would rage if you didn't make $150-200 a day on average.  Most guys are looking to have a good time on the course and don't be afraid to give them shit, drink a beer with them, and tell them to pull their dick out when they top a tee shot ten feet.  Then ten seconds later clean their club and start running to their ball haha.  Caddying is a service job so if you don't like dealing with people then you will not enjoy caddying.  Man this brings back some memories, I could write a short novel on caddying if I sat down and let the old brain stew.

and do not drop them on the cart path, really pisses some people off. Also when they putt do not stand directly to the left, right or straight in front of them. Stand diagonally away from them on the edge of the green and don't let the flag blow in the wind.

Pretty much kiss the members ass the whole round and FOR GODS SAKE DO NOT LOOSE THERE BALL or do anything too stupid. as i telll the new caddies whatever you do donot be a dumbass that all caddying is not being a dumbass.
