Physics students on NS?

So it's official. I have finally made the decision to switch over my degree from geology to physics. (actually geophysics, since I only need 2 extra courses to do that). This means I am effectivly going into third year physics next year instead of fourth year geology!

Just was wondering if there are any physics students or graduate students around here on NS and in the case of grad students what you study?

elementary physics was really easy for me. Pretty much as long as your units cancel you are good. Just plugging stuff into formulas really. I am not so stoked to have to revisit classical mechanics with multivariable calc and advanced calc as a prerequsite...

sweet what have you taken so far? physics 1 and 2, intro quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, and electromag?

I have to catch up on some math over the summer and still have to take electromag in the fall but then I will be fully into advanced physics! probably around the same place as you are.

Good choice man! Geophysics sounds sweet. I'm a freshman in physics, recently scored a position working in a lab at JILA. It's fun stuff!

Just taking college physics for science majors at my college. I like the class, the lab is the biggest waste of time ever though.

I'm positive geophysicists make more?

To OP, as a geology student I was also thinking of it since I sort of like physics even though I didn't do THAT well in my two first year physics classes.. On the other hand geology is more hands-on (which I like) and geophysics is more theoretical. I'll take some of the prerequisites as I move on and take a decision later on.

my physics classes were my favorite classes in school. When i was taking them i would get high and just be in wonderment of of how i could model the movements, and behavior of everything. It was a trip for sure.

Only bad part is, that you will end up going to school for ever, and then becoming some kind of teacher or professor. but hey if it really does interest you a lot, thats an awesome career path. shit, i wish i could have stayed at college forever, haha.

oh maybe geophysics. I was comparing to just physics. geology you have much better chance of making huge bucks. although mostly with oil/mining companies.

That's true. If you want to do a career with physics, it's really good just to major in physics engineering instead of just physics.

currently in AP physics B in 11th grade. The first semester which focused on mechanics, thermodynamics, newton and whatnot was really really interesting. the more hypothetical and less experimental stuff such as particle theory is much more boring and less interesting

took ap phys in high school, and 2 years in college, then in english we had to interview 9 people working in our major (mech engineering for me), after that i switched majors

I already know what the money is like in geology. It's nice being a student with a summer job that pays 3 times what a normal student makes. Geophysics is just as good from what I understand. Most importantly though, and I can't stress this enough, I really don't give a fuck how much money I make. If I liked philosophy I would do that and realize I was going to end up broke.

I always will have geophysics degree to fall back on if I find myself in a situation where I have to support a family or something, but the physics degree will let me pursue what I really want to do, so it's a win win!
