Would you give up skiing?

I'm just curious if any of you are as passionate about something other than skiing, to the point where you would stop skiing to pursue your other dreams.  I recently graduated from from the University of British Columbia where I skied almost 200 days at Whistler over my 4+ years there.  However, I didn't ski one day during my victory lap this season because I wanted to prevent injuries for my future plans.  I am now about to be drafted into the Israel Defense Forces where I will likely serve for three years and definitely not be able to ski during this time.  As hard as this may sound, choosing to forgo my last season for the next 4 years was one of the easiest decisions I've had to make because it meant I would be ready for my next goal in life.  So, has anyone else done something like this or think that they could?

Unfortunately skiing is the only thing i'm passionate about doing. So no, i wouldn't be able to give up the only thing i have.


No worrys though, 3-4 years isn't the end of the world. Having the ability to put skiing aside for greater things like your future, is a quality i wish i had. After your term you can always come back hard.

yea. i think it comes with the territory of growing up to be honest. through my youth i skied everyday, all day, every season. i go to school at plymouth now, im 20 minutes from 4 resorts, and an hour from countless more. i didnt even buy a pass this year. i spent my weekends backpacking and hiking when i should have been skiing. easy decision since im an adventure ed major, but im just focusing my energy and resources on building my future now

Its mandatory in some countries to serve your army and I believe Israel may be one of them.

If he's a citizen of Israel or has an Israeli passport then he may still have to serve time in the army, Im not sure, that was just my guess as to why he's doing 3 years for the Israel army

It would have to involve the greatest head the world has ever seen. And even then, while she's gobbling down her 2nd dessert, the only thing that would be going through my mind would be 2 feet of fresh and super flowy parks.

i love skiing enough to the point where it will at least be a recreational activity and a hobby for as long as i possibly can keep it. however, i don't think i could ever give up this sport for something else completely. i would make adjustments or compromises, but i love skiing way too much to give it up completely.

but good for you for following your dreams. we all have to make sacrifices at some point.

Also, everybody at some point will have to face this decision. I know its easy for all you 15 year olds to say "no way, never", but stuff happens sometimes. Doesn't mean you just stop skiing all together one day, but sometimes you have other priorities that you need to take care of. I'm only 18 and I have already found this to be true.

so far, no. i have not encountered anything that requires me to stop skiing; and for the forseeable future, no need either. which is a good thing cuz that would be a very rough decision.

I think no, I can see where people are coming from but skiing brings me so much enjoyment I want to do it for the rest of my life. I can see quitting to focus on the path ahead of you but for me that probs wont be an issue as I'll go to college near skiing and get good education and ski a lot.

I would really look at the politics and history behind the creation of Israel. I would never work for their government because for practical reasons, that country should not exist (but it does, so I am not advocating for it to be dismantled). Israel is probably Britain's biggest mistake, but like most unwanted children, the other parent (US) gets to be the parenting responsibilities.

Here is an analogy I use to describe Israel:

Camping out on your crazy neighbor's lawn without his permission, and refusing to leave. Whenever you try to talk to your neighbor, you both claim god gave you this lawn.

Israel refuses to negotiate with their enemies (for ideological reasons) and denies the Armenian Genocide (which is extremely ironic).

I am prepared for the shit-storm I have just created.

Yes, I would and I did. I am graduating from UBC as well. I started rowing with the UBC team last February and have skied less than 10 days since. This is the first season I did not own a season pass to any mountain in 24 years. I am now going to continue to pursue rowing and will probably only ski around Christmas time when I am at home.

Everyone that says they will never give up skiing, priorities and people change. I love skiing and I always will but pursuing something else that you are passionate about is not a bad thing. Skiing will wait for you.

Israel.

But I gave up skiing this year to learn to fly. I could have taken several other paths that would have kept me near the mountains, and I definitely intend to go back. In the mean time, flying is pretty awesome.

right now definetly no because skiing is basically my life and nothing else is anywhere close to the fun i have when skiing but a few years ago baseball was like that for me and i dont even play baseball anymore so who knows what ill be doing in my future but i bet ill still be skiing
