50 a day would be worth it maybe if you didnt have much gear invested, and had nothing else to do. Most good young action sports filmers are either still in school, have another job or have projects already lined up. And the 300-500 dollars a day Zac, myself and others filmers are quoting is a pretty standard rate for filming a project for an actual corporation, i.e. an advertisement for an event, a ski shop or a ski resort. Its obviously a completely different story if you're filming your friends for fun.

Looks like there's a lot of hubbub about money here. Remember that OP is flying in from Australia, probably to make a name from himself in the West and put together a promo, for which right now he was offering something around $700 (CAD? AUSD?). We know nothing else, maybe even 50 bucks a day is pushing it for his travel budget, but he wanted to offer a fair price.

For a 15-year-old, that probably should be a bit more than chump change, considering that they'd already had a season pass to Whistler, but if DTF already has other arrangements that would pay him more, why take less?

I'd love to hear more from the OP but truthfully, the rest of the conversation between client and potential filmer should be happening via email and not a public forum.

And everyone harping at Zac about "Oh, $50 shouldn't be turned down by a 15 y.o." should layoff. Ultimately, it'll be a combination of the market's willingness to bear the cost of Zac's services and his own rates that will decide the price.

The cost of doing business as a professional is a hell of a lot more than just the latest gear. Advertising, Office expenses, rent, insurance, transportation...just to name a few things Zac can expect to pay when he enters the market full time; why low ball himself now which not only hurts himself, but other working videographers by undercutting established rates and can certainly make it harder in the future to offer competitive rates when clients have come to expect the bargain basement rack.

Just my opinion

Also i think you should have just said something like 'nah sorry man too busy these days, maybe i can help you out with a day or two of footage but im too tied up with other work'

instead of saying im too fucking good, pay me 500 bucks a day and i'll do it. i apologize for my last comment it was clearly way over the top. just try to come off as a bit more humble next time...you'll go a lot further in this business that way.

I wasn't gonna post this just to stay out of this bullshit but here are my thoughts on this guy paying someone to get filmed.

I would much rather just meet up with some dude, like the OP, when i'm already filming with some homies and just film him too and forget about the money. I find it kinda odd to just get paid by one dude just to film him in the park. Even if I was to do such a thing, 50 bucks a day is an extremely low price. The age of the filmer does not matter, the equipment and experience are what matter. Everyone tries (including myself last year) gave zac shit for being too young. Kid knows what he is doing and deserves to get paid what other filmers get paid, regardless of his age.

It's pretty tough to land yourself a decent paying job in the ski industry, most ski companies have their filmers on lock and you're left to yourself to hustle your own deals with companies to make money. Get the fuck off of Zac's back and shut the fuck up about what people should and shouldn't get paid for video/edits because if you're in this thread talking about it, you probably have no idea what you're saying.

$500 is standard for pretty much anything other than skiing.

I dont get how people can say zac cant ask for industry standard's when he's still in school.
He's filming some of the industries best skiers so why shouldn't he be able to ask for industry standard pay?

I'm not siding with anyone, but even though he's filming some of the best skiers in the ski industry, it doesn't mean he's going to get industry standard pay-- only because the industry standard is much different than the skiing industry standard. Even though Zac is really talented in filming, if he's looking to actually make money he should get out of the ski industry. As much as he should be able to make real money out of freeskiing, there's just not enough money in it for the athletes, nevermind the filmers. It's sad but it's the truth

Leave Zac alone...Yes Zac got him self into quite a debate with payment but give the guy a break. He has talent and has made some great edits. Age shouldn't matter either, and even if its a dslr camera (60d?) he produces good stuff.

I don't make edits. Did I say in my post that my edits are better than his? Nothing ever stands out to me in his edits. It's the same exact thing every time, and it just does not impress me.

You're a fucking idiot. Zac is EASILY one of the most talented filmers I can think of. I would pay money to see you try to make an edit on caliber with one of his.

... it doesn't. There are some fucked up shitty filmers out there who live in LA and do bullshit freelance work and make a shit ton of money. Just surf DVXuser sometime and you'll see them. Zac is more talented then said people.

I'm sure there are a lot of those people, that's what LA is full of. I'm simply saying that Zac is not a god like everybody is making him out too be. Yeah he can film, edit, has an "orange" name, but there is need for a lot of improvement especially if he wants to keep viewers interested. Do you see what I'm saying?

not at all actually. from a cinematography and skiing point of view, his edits are killer. he has a different flavor in all of them, and each have there own vibe. you are obviously not educated in filming and have no idea what you're talking about. as u stated earlier, we are not '15 yo filmers banding together", yes zac is 15, however most of us are older and have experience working outside the skiing industry. not saying zac doesnt. eheath has been pretty successful with his filming (i think) and so have several of the other posters in this thread. you cant win this debate, so just stop

Not in a single one of my posts did I ever reference age being part of skill. Basically since I'm not a professional cinematographer, according to you, I can't voice my opinion on his edits. Aren't his edits for the public so he can showcase his filming skills?

Yes, i 100% agree that he definitely has skills, and his edits are always quality! however, he cannot charge hoever much he wants.

i also very much agree with the comment earlier about the whole not getting paid enough to miss school thing. how ever much he values a day of school should also be a deciding factor.

on the other hand, if he's got nothing else on the table and it's a weekend or a day off or something, why not take the $ 50? its better than NOT getting paid, and its more exposure. and at 15, that's a sick gig.

This is just my opinion, but when it comes to creativity in both filming and editing those same pros, there's no contest.

You have improved a shitload during all these years, but show me a great edit of shitty skiers, people not in the limelight and try to make them look good - someone unknown and make them shine without being featured on NS for EHV - show me.

This is pretty much just plain criticism, but I do not think your camera work or editing is that talented or spectacular compared to many others in "the industry", like I've said before.

Yeah i didn't start CS but i never claimed that. You can't just put a monkey behind a camera and expect a good shot, my first year of edits wasn't that great but i got better. Kevin did start clown school and is still a huge inspiration to me and always will be.

I'm ignoring this statement about filming unknowns and not featuring it on NS. Again, I film my friends, NS features my videos and I make money, why wouldn't I do that? I'm 23, graduated from college, i need money. Seems illogical to not take opportunities when I can, so sorry mike-o, shit aint happening.

I'm not gonna sit here and say im any better than anyone else, but i'd like to see your list of "talented or spectacular" filmers/editors. I think you might find the same problem with them as you do with me, they film very talented athletes. No one wants to watch an edit/video/movie of an average skier, capturing that talented skiing is 1/2 of the edit. How you film that and edit together is the other half. I'd also like to see what you're basing your "camera work" or "editing" off of because I may not doing anything fancy editing (although i think timing and placement is just as important) but I am pretty happy with the camera work I have developed over the years.

Not trying to get super defensive, but I hate the "your edits are only good because of the skiers" type of comment. Again, I film my friends, I'm not gonna stop doing that.
