yeah that kind of sucks. but i am pretty sure that there will be a shitload of safety standards to make it safe or else it wont be really realized.

i saw something for like goods transport, not personal transport. and it said that they only need to travel 20-30 mph because cars, especially in urban areas and because (in europe) the roads are normally not too good approximations to air-line distances.

for goods transport, the safety stuff wouldnt be such a hassle, so maybe thats the future.

correct me if i'm wrong, but from my understanding this is the same principle as the drive-thru bank teller machines here in the US, with these transport tubes being pushed along by a maglev system instead of being sucked through tubes via vacuum.

so, it just took someone seeing the teller machines and going, "OH, i bet we could send people across the country in one of those! even to CHINA!"

damn rad idea, if i don't say so myself

the biggest issue i see is the tunnel.

Half the reason aircraft do as well as they do is because they need big airports and infrastructure...but that's it. Once they take off, they're gone. Nothing but other planes gets in the way.

This thing...not so much. Suppose you want to make one of those tunnels leading straight into a major city. Where do you put the tubes, the stations, all that?

a simple solution would be to treat it much like an air port, have your futuristic tube station on the outskirts of a city, and have it link up to a standard rail way system. The largest problem I foresee would be where the fuck do they put the tubes? line them up next to the freeways? current rail lines? there are definitely going to be some pissed off environmentalists getting in the way of progress, although it would seem like a more environmentally friendly way to travel.

didn't really give me much of anything besides "it can do this." i've head of this as a possible trans-atlantic transpo system, but i'm going to need thorough convincing to believe this is in any way feasible.

Someone with more knowledge on this correct me if I'm wrong; My understanding is that constructing those tubes would amount to such a nightmare of engineering as to be virtually impossible.

extreme pressures, long distances, technological fuck ups, crossing oceans?

do you put it above the ocean surface or below? above? how do you protect it from boats, rogue waves, gale force winds?

sub surface, protecting a negative pressure inside from an extremely positive pressure outside? submarines? whales? tsunamis?

to call it a nightmare would be doing it no justice. it definitely is something that could be done in the future when we have stronger materials to work with, but who knows by that time we may have teleporters.

it seems like something that could be done on flat land, within a city or region. Maybe even something like say, the distance from Washington DC to New York or something. But oceans would be a huge problem.



plus it'd almost definitely have to block the view. You might only experience 1g, but flying through towns and cities along the way going 1400mph would get people sick.

the video claimed what? 6500 KPH? so say 4050 mph? that's pretty fucking intense, that'd be a hell of a ride for sure.

and i agree it would be more practical on a continental sense than trans continental, although it could potentially be done over say the bearing strait. or go from new york to greenland to iceland to london or something along that line. which would make more sense to me engineering wise.

this thing would make the concorde look like a bicycle.

seems to me like the maintenance and liability of 2000 miles of elevated tube that cannot suffer even a hairline crack would negate the efficiency of the travel method. if they found a way to keep the tubes safe as well as putting in air sealed exits every mile or so then it could be plausible

once the thing was built I'm not sure what could go wrong that would be threatening to someones life. Maybe the tube would get stuck and in that case they would shut down the other tubes and cut you out or build some kind of trap doors or something.

The only problem I see is that you can only have one "car" per tube, and each "car" only holds 4-6 people.

am i the only one who sees an issue of stopping the capsul itself? If it needs to travel through the vaccum power, it would need to be at a linear speed. Think about all the work that would need to be done to remain resistance free. i guess magnet lines...hmmm i want this to happen

And it's not like this is a super feasible project until... SHIT.. we can't do this, there aren't any bathrooms. Like it's the crux or something.

its not like a bus or a subway, it would be specifically for travelling say minimum 100-200 miles, anything less than that and its completely inefficient, also pressurized air is not the only option, it could run on a cable/winch system for example w/ magnets levitating the car (tube)
