Recording guitar tracks?

Hey are any of you guys recording guitars a lot?

If so what are your plug ins and what programs are you using?

I am using a pod x3 live and some plug ins like amp farm and such.

here are some guitar tracks i have done some work on with some pretty decent rhythm and solo tones.

Clean chorus at beginning. neck pickup with solo tone at 2:30



In this video i got a pretty wet sounding ton for the solo at 1:55



This video has probably one of my best dry rhythm tones with a pretty decent solo tone at 2:27.

maybe lol, but if i wanted to show off all of them I would of had to post 5 more videos =]. but seriously I wanted to know and see what kind of programs/tones people are getting with recording guitars and share some techniques with getting different sounds because it really is an art in itself.

damn that kramer you play in the first video has amazing tone! sounds super good with the clean chorus too.

I am gonna work on recording more guitar tracks this summer, but for me it'll be more acoustic stuff. Havent figured out if I will go directly using the pickups or if I should use a condenser mic. actually, same goes with my electric. I might just put a condenser in front of my amp and hang one above the drums and then tweak the levels till it works. then do vocals and bass over top of that? idk, havent put much thought into it yet. I'm not super picky and it sorta suits my bands sound for it to be rough so we will see. I'm pretty new at all that lol

for sure, I wish i could help you out. I have very limited knowledge on how to record guitars.

but you should show off the rest of them guitars!! i wanna see em ha ha

90% of what I do is guitar based, but I have yet to get a usable guitar recording. I can get good tones at bedroom levels, but I can't get them onto my computer. I'm using a Fasttrack Pro with an SM57. No matter how I experiment with mic placement, I have to set my input level to 9/10 just to pick up anything, and even then its unbearably noisy. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Either I need a pre amp or a condensor, or just more volume.

it could be your interface. Have you ever sent audio out of your computer through your interface?

I was trying to send audio through a couple monitors through my Fasttrack pro, and I had tons of signal noise. But I knew it wasn't my mix because it sounded fine on headphones and it didn't make sense.

Turns out I had to go into the settings on my mac, open up the fast track pro settings, and turn off all the outputs and inputs I wasn't using. This solved the problem effectively, it was really strange but it worked. If you're not on a mac you should be able to do it in your driver settings.
