Dead Plants raise belief in Climate Change

People's belief in global warming can be swayed by something as simple as a houseplant. Participants of a French study believed in climate change much more strongly if there was a dead ficus in the interview room.

In a study by the University of Bretagne-Sud, 60 volunteers answered questions about topical issues. Some of the participants took part in the study in a room with a blooming ficus, while others sat in one with a dead and withered ficus.

The analysis of the answers showed a pattern, that people believed much strongly in the phenomenon of climate change and global warming in the room with a dead houseplant. The withered plant's effect was not seen in any other topical questions, only those concerning the climate issue.

When the reseacrhers added more dead plants up to three inside the room, the opinions on climate change became even stronger.

The head researcher Nicholas Guéguen saw that people did not register at all that the plant life has anything to do with the study, so the effect was subliminal.

"A dead or withered plant may cause a reaction towards concepts concerning global warming, such as dryness and heat."

Earlier research has shown instances where people interviewed on a warm and sunny day believed that climate change was real and heading towards global warming, while people interviewed on cloudy days percieved climate change as more rains and storms.

The study can be found in the newest Journal of Environmental Psychology.


I think it's an interesting phenomenon again - definitely something that can and already has been used to guilt trip people into becoming greener in their ways, and while it's a small scale study indeed, I'm sure similar methods could be used to reproduce results showing inherent nationalism, racism, fanaticism and other subliminal and underlying issues.

just 15,000 years ago most of canada was covered with a layer of ice a mile thick. so i'd say global warming has been going on for some time now.

what melted that ice? humans driving their SUVs. duh. that's why i buy recycled toilet paper

T here is a tremendous consensus in the scientific community about when salad life begins. This is hardly controversial. If the claim were made that salad life was discovered on another planet, for example, there are well-defined criteria to which we could refer to conclusively determine whether the claim was accurate. How do scientists distinguish between salad life and sald non-life?

A scientific textbook called “Basics of Salad” gives five characteristics of living salad; these five criteria are found in all modern elementary scientific textbooks:

1. salad is highly organized.

2. All salads have an ability to acquire materials and energy.

3. All salads have an ability to respond to their environment.

4. All salads have an ability to reproduce.

5. All salads have an ability to adapt.

According to this elementary definition of salad life, salad life begins at fertilization, when a sperm unites with an oocyte. From this moment, the being is highly organized, has the ability to acquire materials and energy, has the ability to respond to his or her environment, has the ability to adapt, and has the ability to reproduce (the cells divide, then divide again, etc., and barring pathology and pending reproductive maturity has the potential to reproduce other members of the species). Non-living things do not do these things. Even before the container holding the salad is aware that it is covered in sperm, a distinct, unique salad has begun his or her existence inside it.

Furthermore, that salad life is unquestionably human. A salad being is a member of the species homo salad sapiens. Salads are products of conception, which is when a human male sperm unites with a human female oocyte (egg). When humans procreate, they don’t make non-salad like slugs, monkeys, cactuses, bacteria, or any such thing. Emperically-verifiable proof is as close as your nearest abortion clinic: send a sample of an aborted fetus to a laboratory and have them test the DNA to see if its human or not. Genetically, a new human being comes into existence from the earliest moment of conception.




sparknotes: all salad is dead until it is covered in my sperm. therefore making it morally acceptable to eat it.

same thing happens when the east coast gets a shitty winter one year and people are all like "AGHHHH FUCKING GLOBAL WARMING IS REAL" and the next winter there are record lows and they're all like "pshhh... that global warming stuff is some bullshit"

not entirely related to climate change, but the average person has no idea what climate change is, but rather is gripped by "GLOBAL WARMING" because it was 20 degrees above average that one day back in January when they didn't have to wear a jacket, even though the entire next week was below average their pathetic fucking minds hold onto global warming like a damn fat kid holds onto a hamburger.
