Don't know anything about the decision but I'd venture a guess that the event organizers want to drive the overall cost of the program down (less events) and bring the quality up. At least on the skiing side, I could see athletes wanting to reduce the # of events on their schedule, especially with all the Olympic qualifying stuff coming up.
Kinda remind me of the X-Games from years ago or the MTV S&M Festival.
They can still do slopestyle and big air in San Francisco, just ask Jonny Moseley.
