Honda civic or Nissan Pathfinder

I live in edmonton alberta so a relatively big city. I do drive up to the mountains almost every weekend but i just don't know which one to buy. Help me out

Well the pathfinder is obviously better for carrying your gear, but the civic is better on gas

if you pay for 100% of your gas and you dont have a decent job....civic. Its a way more of a bitch car but it gets the job done in comfort and is good on gas. Gas is so much these days a pathfinder is gunna be atleast 70 for a tank now a days. When it comes down to it, you need a car from a to b. IF gas is going to be that big of an issue, go with civic, otherwise the fratfinder is a sick car

Why not have both? Get a Subaru Impreza. It will be a rust bucket, but you will have a decent 4x4 that gets 30 mpg.

I had an Integra ("luxury" civic) and she was a piece of shit, but she was fun and cheap as fuck. I'm never getting another one, but I'd recommend it as a first car.

if you like easy maintenance, good gas mileage, and a car that will run after the end of the world, go with the civic, it's basically the ak-47 of the car world. easy to use and maintain. and a great first car.

i know everyone clowns on them but an si or a type r gives u a quick little car thay gets decent gas mileage for the buck. they arent bad cars. theyve just got a bad rep since every douche bag puts a fart can on the lower end models and thinks theyve got a race car.

I have actually owned both.

I had a 1989 Civic that was unstoppable, got good gas mileage, and had plenty of space. However, it sucked to drive, had no balls, and was marginal in the snow.

After the Civic I bought a 1995 Pathfinder. It was unreal in the snow, absolutely perfect cosmetically and very solid. However, the gas mileage was pretty poor, it had no balls, and the transmission went out at 150k. My brother has the exact same car except stick and he is pushing 250k.

I liked driving the pathfinder much more, but the Civic was more reliable. You are probably looking at much more recent years so I cant really say.

you're crazy dude. those cars are built really well and will run forever, so to call them shit boxes is a bit of an exaggeration. and if you wreck any car built after 1980 at any speed you're going to total the thing.

op - if gas is a consideration, get a civic. if you want something to handle the snow...pathfinder all the way.

Sister just got an 2010 civic and it's got great gas mileage and its a pretty decent car but the gear box is absolute shit. Well I guess if you pay for a Honda you get a honda.

that sucks. you definitely got shafted. my civic had 105k on the motor when i pulled it and swapped a jdm b18c type r motor and it was still running like a raped ape. first car i ever built. still have it, too. ill keep that thing forever...sentimental.

Well my dad owns a 94 civic. Has over 600k on the motor, has replaced transmission and a few things but the thing still runs reliable, he just drove 800k to Vancouver from Lake Louise here a couple days ago. Thing is good in the snow on the highways and what not. Sure it wont get you were 4 wheel drive will but if your driving up from Edmonton it will be fine, been in it through many a storm in the Rogers Pass. If buying used though try and make sure you buy from some old lady because kids wont be able to drive stick properly and will drive the shit out of it most likely. Great gas mileage to just about 700kms to a 45 liter tank.

I'm not sure what chain requirements are in Canada, but if you're allowed to throw on snow tires and drive a front wheel drive around, you should just rock the Civic. Cheaper in all aspects, more reliable, and better in the city.

I have an 01' civic ex right now and it runs like a champ it has 165k on it still has the original engine and clutch. I can't complain it was free and doesn't cost anything but the cost of parts to fix (my dad owns a auto repair shop) as for driving in the snow it handles alright considering its a front wheel drive car, just throw some good snow tires on it and you shoud be satisfied with its snow preformance. As for gas mileage when I drive conservatively and shift around 2200 rpm I get 32 MPG when I drive like a retard i get like 25-28. As for space holding skis, I only go up to the hill with one other person so it's no problem at all. If your heading up to the hill with a car load you could just get a Thule ( I have one but it cuts down on my gas mileage with the big box.) overall I'd say go with the civic very reliable cars. I can't speak for the pathfinder but my mom had one and I only got 16-18 mpg

I had an 02 pathy LE and it was amazing in snow. Throw a Thule on top and it's unbeatable. I'm from spruce so we'd drive in the same conditions. Definately recommend it to anyone. The mileage isn't the best, but as long as you have a job and buddies to pay bus fare to the mountains you're all good.

I have a civic, so good for gas and cheap/fiew repairs. Truck's always more baller but i say it depends on if you have money to fill it up!

ive got an 08 civic, don't really have any complaints with it, except for its a pain in the ass to load ski gear into compared to my truck or a suv. Its been reliable so far and decent on fuel. If you don't have a problem paying $1.50/L for gas this summer then get the pathfinder, if you want a nice car thats better on gas, go for a civic

i'd get the pathfinder just because you can d so much more with it. and it's less likely to get stuck with the pathfinder on those epic pow days. not having all wheel drive is a bitch sometimes.

i drive an acura csx type s, which is a fancier version of a civic with nav and leather and such. Its been pretty solid for most conditions. The key is to have a GOOD winter tires, do not cheap out on them and you should be golden. I have cheap ass winter tires and still do ok with them. I have a roof rack for holding skis, so room is no issue for me. Next year i think im going to think about some studded winter tires. My car also has a mechanical LSD so that really helps with traction.

Both cars you listed will be good cars, just a civic will be less pow day able but cost far less to keep on the road.

I live in edmonton too. Was hoping to make it out for free ride, but sick as fuck at the moment. so no dice.

my parents have a pathfinder and it's awful on gas and has terrible all-season tires, but it's solid for the country. not great if you plan on doing a lot of city driving though. thing's kinda bulky and has really bad blind spots. transmission died on it too, and it's an 05. i would recommend against it.

if its a newer pathfinder it will have a really good re-sell value, but that also depends upon condition, year, mileage etc.
