Replying to A little first hand perspective on Iraq...
I went out with 2 of my friends last night that went to Iraq for a year and just got back. They were both injured, just minor injuries but still scary. They were in that engineering division from WI that had record casualties for an Army Reserve division. Anyway, I asked them about the numbers of trained Iraqis over there, after Bush said in his debate that there are 100,000 Iraqi police and troops trained already. They said the situation is this: yes there are about 80,000 trained or in training but about 1/4 of those are loyal to Iraq. They said 3 out of 4 Iraqi police or troops they saw were just men desparate for money trying to support their kids, they run at the first sign of danger and show up for work about once or twice a week. Furthermore, about a quarter of these men and women work with the insurgents. This is not surprising, but it was interesting to hear it from them. The police provide the insurgents with food, cigarettes, water, and weapons (all on US budget). also, the police act as body guards for high level insurgents and clear insurgents at checkpoints routinely. there. that should put another perspective on you Bush lovers that say his moral compass was right on target during the debate.
