The guy is the real deal, light years ahead of 99% of other comedians. Seen him live and the guy is just incredible and so perceptive of a "room" and its dynamics. Never seen anything like it.
His material, while always hilarious, is really next level because so many of his observations feel like those revelatory, universal truths that bounce around our heads but never firm up enough for us to articulate them. His self-deprecation is real, it isn't exploitative...he uses stand up and comedy as a means to catharsis. He's one of those REAL comedians who has to do comedy as a means of survival...like he uses his audience as a collective therapist.
Plenty of comedians rely on shock appeal, and say horrible, awful, offensive things to get a laugh. Usually though, what they're saying isn't really true and it's said simply for the shock. When CK says something "shocking" it isn't a situation where you laugh because it's absurd...you laugh because he's touched on the darkness, the meanness, the prejudices, the intolerance that we ALL share yet never vocalize...you laugh because you're shocked that someone else has just outed you. He knows who we are as a species, as a culture...so many other comics rely on news blurbs and topical bs to garner laughs.
And, yes...watch ALL of his bits, they're unbelievable. But, when you're done, watch the first season of Louie on Netflix. It's brilliant, it's honest, "artsy", bleak.....it's.....perfect.
I just watched a video from his youtube channel. He said that mexicans are brown because they didn't do as thorough of a job as we did with a genocide of our indinas. lolz were had.
