Replying to Tuning/De-Tuning Edges

I've never maintained skis myself before. Can anyone give me any usefull information as to what tools I will need, whether or not I should even do it, or just take them to a shop, proper techniques...anything along these lines. Just thought it would be cool to learn to maintain them on my own. I want to sharpen up all my edges, and de-tune lightly under the boot for rails. Any input is appreciated, thanks.
