Sunshine 4/21-22

Im headed out to Calgary on a business trip next week and I'm planning to hit Sunshine Village April 21-22. I've never been before and was looking for any tips.  Also, I was hoping to hit Delirium but I understand the patrol wont let you up there alone? Anyone interested?

hang out at the gate ( with full avy gear) and just ask to tag along with people . most will say yes

You'll need a transceiver as well as a buddy to get through the gate into the dive so dont forget to bring one. (Can probably rent one at SSV?)

But seriously do a day at louise too, its just bigger, steeper and has a sick park.

Interesting...

Everything that I had read seemed to imply that LL didn't have anything as gnarly as Delirium.  Maybe I'll have to check it out for myself.

delerium dive is the only somewhat steep/challenging slope at sunshine. lake louise has eagle ridge which has 3 steep runs that have gnarly cliffs to send off of. Aswell they have whithorn chutes, abc chutes and north cornis, all of which are steep and have large cliffs. dont want to sound biased towards lake louise but its true

Except it's not true. If you think Delirium Dive is the only steep/challenging slope at Sunshine then you need to start looking a bit harder.

Yup, but hey more for me then.

The issue with the lake this time of year is freeze/thaw. A lot of the terrain there gets more sun and turns to crust and chunks sooner than shine. As of a couple days ago, the majority of WH2 and brownshirt were pretty gross, even in the afternoon once the sun had been on them for a while. ER 3/6/7 skied fairly nice in the morning. Meanwhile at shine I can do dive laps since it seems to still be in winter mode. Bre-x, mainline and even some of Galaxy were all super good for april. Fatboy was also in super good shape.

If its park laps you're after the lake has shine beat by a large margin. But once again a little more freeze thaw there so let the sun warm it up for a bit.

No, i know this. Try and guess y they dont have any freeski comps or anything related to freeskiing. Look at all the local good big mountain skiers (16+) from around the area and see where their home mountain is. most of them are lake louise, fernie, revy etc.

Fuck Yeah, PY Leblanc straighlining the Dive and some guy tumbling off an 80 footer.

S.RUZYCKI - It really doesn't sound like you know what you're talking about. There's so much hidden terrain at Sunshine if you bothered to pull your head out of your ass and go looking. Whether there are good skiers you know about coming out of there is completely irrelevent to your original (and incorrect) claim.

To the Banff locals: Sunshine sucks balls, its flat as fuck, like everywhere else in the Rockies. Most of your vert there is spent poling.

The only serious gnar is the Rocket Pocket, which is legit. Silver City looks sick too, unfortunately Sunshine Patrol is such a joke they don't only have a few riders who can handle it and had to close it.

If you want to ski consistently good, steep terrain, you need to head to go further down highway one. You can ski 4000 ft descents and you won't need to pole once.

I've skied Rocket Pocket but I've also skied some lines at Sunshine that are steeper and others that are cliffier (not a real word, I know).

True the vert at Sunshine is shit compared with places to the West but that's a separate issue - this argument wasn't about vert, it was about whether the Dive is the only steep/challenging terrain there and it's not by a long shot.

KH has tonnes more options in the alpine and Revy has way bigger and better drops and they both wipe the floor with Sunshine when it comes to vert but claiming Sunshine is all flat easy terrain is a load of rubbish. If you know where to look there's plenty of steep and gnarly pillow lines at treeline.

Eh, I enjoy sunshine. I've only really gone with girlfriends who are around beginner to intermediate though, so I have not had much experience with the more difficult terrain sunshine has to offer. But let me tell you, it's all worth it for the gondola ride, amiritelol

i can confirm this.

Wild west and the dive can be a mellow stroll and extremely fucking gnar . i thought the same thing about the place until minihef here showed me around . Its no kicking horse no but sunshine has a few badass zone ( yes they are short ).

Lake louise has more rocky/more vert areas but it just doesn't get the snow sunshine does. Plus the best part about sunshine is the fact that they DO require avy gear in the dive and WW. keeps the fucking gappers away and leaves the goods for us and if your willing to go for a walk theres even more ggnar in the slack country.

that being said RCR is putting out a fucking sick pass next season. nakiska, fernie, kimberley ,KICKING HORSE and LOUISE ( because i mean this is NS and we do ski park )

Yep, I started working on it but then stopped as I was hoping to hit it again to get better footage as the light and snow was so shitty when I skied it. Didn't get the chance though so just need to finish it off.

Yep, it's far skier's left, a bit rockier and steeper than the main chutes which get most of the traffic.

Its good to see the video turned out good. Me and a guy i worked with were trying to watch you guys with binocs from the patrol shack top of goat. But the clouds kept blocking you guys so we went down to fat girl and still couldnt see you guys.

Yeah i'm not surprised you couldn't see us, the vis just got worse and worse. It didn't help that we took our time over it - wanted to scout it thoroughly and we were very cautious of the slabby snow in the top chute.

I'm guessing you were one of the trail crew we spoke to at the bottom of fat boy? I had heard people were watching us from Goat's Eye, I guess word got around quickly when we were spotted up there.
