getting a first drop jacket of my mate for free but apparently its pretty dirty, what is the best way to clean it?

always just follow the instruction on the jacket.  a lot of people thinks it isn't good to wash outerwear, because it wears the waterproofing off...but that's NOT true.  it is actually recommended to regularly wash your jackets and pants.  washing really helps the material stay breathable and waterproof.

When you do it, use nikwax tech wash or a powdered detergent

No no no you should never use a powdered detergent, it's been known to clog the pores themselves and make the jacket not breathable. Nikwax is the way to go, or a liquid detergent (but a very small amount)
